Title: Night-time Protein Shake - WATER or MILK ???
Post by: Ex Coelis on May 05, 2009, 05:57:38 PM
like most I drink a protein shake before bed to prevent catabolism while I sleep

because I'm too cheap to buy casein, I down 2 scoops of complex whey with hot water

my understanding is that milk will slow the absorption of the whey but I'm concerned the high calorie content is a bad idea so late

are my fears justified even if I use skim milk?

dont trip broseph, skim milk is just fine. however its not going to really effect the digestion rate of whey. neither will adding fat, as nw suggested.

but dont worry whey isnt so extremely fast that it will be of no use at night...its still a good option.

Forget whey or casean, eat or drink some egg whites before bed...  slow absorbing complete easily digested protein.

Just don't buy them from Bob Chick's egg whites int'l, unless you want to pay more than twice what you would pay at Wal Mart or Costco for 100% egg whites.

whey is cheaper than egg whites.

egg whites and whey digest at about the same speed.

whey has better amino acids and more leucine.

your advice = sucks

i avoid dairy products in general as they contain lactose.  Even skim milk has high amounts of dairy sugar.  Dairy fats contribute to subcutaneous fat deposits and could be avoided.  I see no problem mixing protein with water, since we're not really consuming it for the taste anyways.

lactose is only a problem if you are lactose intolerant...otherwise its perfectly fine.

dairy fats dont contribute to fat any more than any other kind of fat.

so you're saying all fats are the same?  Omega 3's and fish oil = same fats as deep fried cheese?

steak doesnt have 12g of sugar in an 8 ounce serving.

no not all fats are the same. however you said dairy fats contribute to 'subcutaneous fat stores'... as if there is some special qualit about them... but dairy fat = steak fat/egg fat...

theres nothing wrong with milk sugar.   (lactose -> glucose)
