But there were so many greater musicians during his time.

Johnny Cash and Buddy Holly easily PWN him from a pure talent standpoint.

Especially Buddy with his songwriting abilities and the fact that he did most of it at 21 and 22 years old.

For the licks, sure. I would agree with you on that.
For the feel, time, and phrasing, hardly. Luther could play that stuff naturally. Others attempting imitation of him...not so much.
