I purposely left off many olympic sports like the Decathlon and Triathlon and many other. Out of the list above who are the best athletes.
I'd have to say a basketball player. They need to have mad endurance and even the biggest guys can still sprint, handle the ball and all have insane verticals. I thought of football but these guys play 16 total games, maybe 50 plays a week in short 5 second intervals.

the ultimate combination of size, speed and conditioning.
i'd put rugby second, just due to the fact it isn't as physical a game. (this is not debatable)

In the words of kenny powers "I play real sports - not trying to be the best at exercising" :P

3. Olympic weightlifters
Maybe not the most athletic "overall" but they have some great conditioning for their sport. Just do some cleans or what ever and you know. And weightlifters don't mess around. It's hardcore training and they do every single thing that is marked in their program. Hockey players for example seem like amateurs compared to them.

the most skilfull mix of hand and foot skills, catch, tackle, sprint, endurance and 1 on 1 physical prowess is undoubtedly AFL Rules Football.
A basketballer wont cut it as they have no foot skills or tackle and man on man, Rugby they dont use foot or hands, NFL they can even play a game without touching the ball, and even the running positions dont cover more than a few miles per game, soccer they dont use their hands or anythig BUT their feet, and are built like baby birds, baseball, well, thats a past-time like cricket...
the only thing that comes close to AFL football is gaelic football.
if you've never seen it then youtube it. many guys cover over 15 miles per game, can sprint a 100m in 11s or less, can bench 300, run a 4:05 mile, kick the ball 60m, handball and kick with both hands and both feet, pass a ball 50m to a running team-mate and hit them "laces out" at full stretch, crash a pack, break a tackle, and climb an opposition's back to take a mark (catch) some 10 ft off the ground...then come back and do it the next week.
-
Rugby League (get that RaRa rugby crap out of here) - extremely fast paced, full on tackling, very skillful game if you ask me.
I train for a water sport which is Outrigging, open ocean stuff. It's a hard sport and can take a lot out of you but i think contact sports with teams are for better athletes. I just prefer things where i can push myself to limits and smash myself up like previously powerlifting and now outrigging.

And they can do triple backflips and bench 500. ::)

NFL running backs are the best athletes on earth.Olympic speed, strength, power, hand eye coordination, change of direction speed. No athletes come close to the physical skills of them.

they used to have this show were pro athletes from diffrent sports would compete in many diffrent challenges. baseball players would always win. football players are one dimensional for the position there playing. how often does a pro football player drops a pass. if a pro baseball player dropped a ball(error) it hardly ever happens.

This will sound a bit absurd, but in college intramurals baseball players routinely won more than others...you ever seen a basktball player try to throw a baseball or football...looks like a girl throwing. most baseball positions require agility, extreme hand-eye coordination, speed, some strength...besides, I've noticed there are a lot of smart, well-spoken baseball players...compared to the thugs of basktball who do nothin but showboat
-
Which group of athletes would place higher in a round robin type of tournament consisting of teh following activities:
flag football
softball
pick up basktball game
100 meter relay
etc..
football players, baseball plyrs, basktball plyers, bodybuilders...
here are my pics:
flag football- football plyrs, baseba

Boxing, those guys need it all, extreme fitness, strength, stamina and speed
-
1 -MMA -K1
2 - Rugby
3 - Strongman
4 - Powerlifting - Olympic Lifting
Basketball compared with the above is child play...

Gaelic football is awesome. But is in fear like may sports of the contact becoming less and less over the years

Cycling.
The sheer madness of cycling 120+ miles in one day is beyond comprehension.
But many of the races are multi-day events, and some even extend for over two weeks. That's just insanity.
Many don't realize the speed these guys travel at.
But they will get through a hill stage with multiple climbs with an average speed of 25 mph.
That's just sick.
There's a reason so many try to cheat, despite the large testing program and the high risks (if they get caught they're banned from tour de france for life). The reason is simple - it's an absolutely brutal sport.

posting as hard too

Gymanstics: gymnasts can run fast, jump, lift/press, are extremely flexible, great balance. They have practical physiques that are impressively strong; they can still wear normal clothes and do all the things one could reasonable want a fit body to do. Pound for pound they are the strongest of any athlete.
-
Probably something like soccer or rugby because they run like crazy.
Bodybuilding isn't sport and really shouldn't have been on the initial list.
-
Probably something like soccer or rugby because they run like crazy.
I consider an athlete more than just someone who can run fast/long. Need to have hand eye co-ordination, strength, endurance, speed, etc....

It sounds like you are talking about that old "Superstars" program on ABC...and the famous "tug-of-war" between the Dallas Cowboys and Kansas City Royals (not Chiefs) that was declared a draw after 90 minutes.
