Depends upon your economic situation and the responsibility level of the person you are loaning to.

I don't think I'm really in a position to be loaning anyone money, but the person I'm loaning the money to is a great guy (known him on and off since we were kids, got in a physical fight with him in 5th grade) and I'm afraid I might have offended him.  :-\

I make decent money, but I'm big on saving and if I got screwed over it would really irritate me to no end.  :-X

RPF,

As seemingly the only responsible person in my family/friends, I constantly find myself lending people money.  I enjoy it, even though I never charge interest.

Why?

Because I benefit from the predictability of deadbeats.  I *always* hold something of greater value until they repay me the cash.  it could be a gun, a guitar, a computer monitor, some piece of jewelry they have.  Sometimes, I almost *hope* they will fail to repay me so I can keep the goodies.

That's my solution.  Always lend when you can, but hold something of greater value.  If they don't have something of value, tell them to borrow something from someone :)

I would have play it a different way myself...Tell him not to sweat the $90 but he will owe you dinner and drinks(nicest place in your area) on his birthday or yours(which ever is closer to now)...Make jokes about how that $90 you lent him will end up costing him double that with the amount of boozing it up you are planning on doing...By doing this, you will get a good idea about the type of guy you call your friend...And when he doesn't pay up(and he won't) it would sound so petty when you keep asking him about the dinner and drinks he owes you...Every time you see him, you just keep saying "I'm starving myself for the dinner and drinks"...In this situation, being passive aggressive is your best way to go...

Bottom line is if your asking a friend to sign some kind of IOU for $90, there must be a reason and statistics show its not going to end good...You setting yourself up for a very petty fight...Make it about dinner and drinks and you will always have upper hand...Or do something really smart and don't lend money to friends ;)

The thing is, this loan isn't like a friends loan (if that makes sense).  It's sort of a loan for something he's doing career wise.

Does that make it any less petty?  ???

It's not really that I can't loan the $90... It's that the though of someone screwing me over makes me extremely uncomfortable.  :-X

it's normal to not want to get screwed over.

hell, what if he doesn't pay? you're going to be payin more in lawyer fees than what he owes you.

there is no point if there is that much risk. or take his computer or PS3 for the time being until he pays you back
