As you might remember, the attempts to have genetically modified food labeled all failed. I just found out how you can tell what produce is genetically modified.
Thanks to Fumiko and Bruce!
Read the Numbers on Your Fruit
I just found this out about a month ago and I've been an organicvegan for over four years, go figure.
That just goes to say that we must all remain as students and continue to learn and learn - never stop studying and gaining new information.
Okay, so what did I learn?
I learned that sticker labels on the fruits actually tell you how the fruits have been grown - whether they were organically grown or conventionally grown with pesticides and herbicides; oh, and let's not forget about the genetically engineered fruits.
Conventional Fruit Labels
Four digits and does not start with 9
** mostly starting with the digit 4
Organic Fruit Labels
Five digits and starts with number 9
Genetically Modified Fruit Start with the digit 8
** this is good to know because stores aren't obligated to tell you if a fruit has been genetically modified
Okay, so if you come across an apple in the store and it's labels 4922, it's an conventional apple grown with herbicides and harmful fertilizers.
If it has a sticker 99222, it's organic and safe to eat.
If it says 89222, then RUN!!!! It has been genetically modified (GMO).
So next time you go shopping, remember these critical numbers and know how to avoid purchasing inorganic and GMO fruits. Shop Safe :)

Genetically Modified Food is certainly fine to eat. All this means is that weaknesses of the plant are eliminated and the parts we do like, Fructose Content, Hardiness, Color, Insect repellant qualities, skin thickness are expressed through breeding for such alleles.
No need to have an irrational fear for GMO`s at all. Organic DOES NOT mean better, nor is there any difference whatsoever for health.
-
In fact, GMO`s can be a healthier alternative than Organic due to the fact that Higher Nutrient quality and anti-oxidatives can be expressed above a conventional organic crop.

Hereford, right or not, do you believe consumers should have the right to know what they are purchasing? Do you believe the free market should decide? Because we have been denied that. So I would really like to know where you stand on that?
-
I wrote a column for my University about this exact thing awhile back.
Yes, I do think people have the right to know what they are purchasing. However the term "GMO" is not necessarily a bad one. GMO crops and seeds usually mean that the undesirable traits (such as suceptibility to certian diseases) have been mitigated, and desirable traits (taste i.e., sugar retention, color, fertility, etc) have been accentuated.
The free market should decide, although I think all mandetory labeling would do is create a situation like we have in the organic markets. That is, a small number of consumers would pay a little more for this product, and 99% of people would buy whatever was cheapest (and had acceptable quality).
Monsanto has done amazing things with modern crops.
