i'm looking to do something in the morning. the guy i work with quit smoking and started walking for a couple miles before work in the morning. says he feels a thousand times better (not just cuz of the smoking, but says the walk wakes him up nicely).

It makes a world of difference. Even if you don't follow the entire program listed, just getting out in the morning and getting a mile or two in provides a lot of benefits, both physical and mental.

my mother in law started walking i'd say about 6 months ago. she lost about 40 lbs (she was about a deuce to begin with). i keep telling her the weight loss is gonna stop soon like some kind of a tool, but she's going strong. i'm not trying out for the olympics anytime soon, but would like to be a little more active.
-
you can do some of your best stalking in the morning. hide in the bushes with your tool bag while it's still dark, then just wait for christmas to come.

while i drive to work in the morning and enjoying breakfast (coffee and a cigarette), this smoking blonde runs by my house. maybe i should get a potato sack?

Based on what you have said, it sounds like walking would be perfect for you. You could always move into more strenuous activities later on, but you may find that true fitness walking is not a "walk in the park" so to speak.
If nothing else, you cannot continue to be shown up by your mother in law.

3 times per week...6 AM. I hate running.

3x a week 2 miles each time sometimes more. Bet 90% of this board cant run a mile without stopping, and it's nothing to be proud of really. I hate running.
