Sonia Sotomayor
Born June 25, 1954 in New York, Sonia Sotomayor has traveled far beyond the Bronx projects where she grew up to become the first Puerto Rican woman to serve as a U.S. Circuit Court judge.
Judge Sotomayor is a first generation American born to parents who were both from Puerto Rico. Despite the fact that she had no lawyer role models among family members or neighbors, she knew from an early age that she wanted to become a lawyer.
“When I was nine or ten, I became enamored of Nancy Drew stories and I wanted to be an investigative detective like her,” Judge Sotomayor recalls. “But I had developed diabetes at 8 and was told I wouldn’t be able to do that kind of work.”
Calling herself “a true media child,” she says Perry Mason ultimately provided the motivation to switch her career goals.
“I noticed that Perry Mason was involved in a lot of the same kinds of investigative work that I had been fascinated with reading Nancy Drew, so I decided to become a lawyer,” Judge Sotomayor explains. “Once I focused on becoming a lawyer, I never deviated from that goal.”
Urged by a high school friend to attend an Ivy League college, Judge Sotomayor enrolled at Princeton University, finding it a “very foreign experience for someone from the South Bronx.” She refers to her years there as “the single most growing event of my life” and succeeded in graduating summa cum laude in 1976. She went on to Yale Law School where she was the editor of the law journal and received her J.D. degree in 1979.
Judge Sotomayor began her career as an assistant district attorney, working in the New York County District Attorney’s Office from 1979 - 1984 with Robert Morgenthau. As a member of the Trial Bureau, she litigated cases involving robberies, assaults, murders, police brutality, and child pornography.
“My work ran the gamut of criminal activity,” she explains. “It was wonderful training for a lawyer.”
In 1984, she entered private practice, working as one of only seven or eight litigators in a 35-lawyer firm in New York City. Her areas of specialty included intellectual property and copyright cases, international transactions involving grain commodity trading, and automobile dealer relations law. Working for both American and foreign clients, she had the opportunity to travel extensively domestically and abroad. Some of her most exciting cases involved legal work on behalf of clients who were trade mark owners. Many of the cases required a great deal of investigative work when counterfeit issues arose.
“As a result, I had my own bulletproof vest and worked closely with law enforcement officials,” she says, fulfilling in part the Nancy Drew fantasies of her youth.
In 1990, the managing litigation partner of her firm, David A. Botwinik, urged her to apply when the Senate Judicial Committee was seeking nominations for a vacated seat on the federal bench.
“I had always wanted to be a judge, but I assumed it would happen much later in my career,” Judge Sotomayor explains. “I was still in my 30s at the time and I felt they would not even consider me. If it hadn’t been for my partner’s insistence and support, I never would have applied.”
Nominated by President George Bush in November 1991, she was confirmed on August 11, 1992 by the U.S. Senate to serve as a federal judge for the U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York. Only six years later, she was nominated by President William Clinton to serve as an appellate judge and she was confirmed by the Senate on October 2, 1998 to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.
She describes her transition from practitioner to judge and later to appellate judge as “very dramatic and exciting,” and she enjoys the challenge of hearing cases that present many complex legal issues.
In addition to her work on the bench, Judge Sotomayor is an adjunct professor at New York University School of Law and a lecturer-in-law at Columbia Law School. She is a member of the American Bar Association, the New York Women’s Bar Association, the Puerto Rican Bar Association, the Hispanic National Bar Association, the Association of Judges of Hispanic Heritage, and the National Council of La Raza. She has received many honors including, most recently, an award from the National Association of Women Lawyers.
Judge Sotomayor recommends that those who want to pursue a legal career today study hard and become the most well-rounded person they can during their years as a student.
“The practice of law is perhaps the most diverse, eclectic exposure to life that you can receive,” she explains. “People come to you with their problems, and their cases cover a wide range of issues. For you to be able to practice law with the vision it requires, you have to be a very well-rounded person because whatever happens out in the real world, whether it involves business or family or technology, usually finds its way into the courtroom.”

If a white person was a member of the racist white power group would they get confirmed????
If a black person were a member of the black power movement would they be confirmed????
I see no reason why anyone of any race should get a pass for belonging to racist organizations.
None.
-
3333, if this judge really is a member of La Raza, theres no way in hell she should be confirmed. If this info is absolutely correct, this needs to be publicized. La Raza is a very aggressive and, at times, hateful organization that represents the rights of illegal immigrants in this country.

Check my link, its the American Bar Association.
Check this out.

People need to respond to this.....

People need to respond to this.....
They wont. The left cares only about racial agendas, quotas, numbers, etc.
All that matters to them is that she is a "latina".
What a farce.

NCLA isn't a 'racist' group. Where do you come up with this non-sense?
-
NCLA isn't a 'racist' group. Where do you come up with this non-sense?
"The Race" by definition is a racist organization. They favor amnesty for illegals and all other sorts of race based nonsense.
-

Supporting amnesty doesn't make one racist. They also support publicly i might add, the enforcement of the United States Border. They are also given money by Walmart and Citi bank and the Ford foundation. I guess they can't be all that racist now huh?
Oh and as for "the race" nonsense it's actually “the people” or “the community.” Translating the name as “the race” is not only inaccurate, it is factually incorrect. “Hispanic” is an ethnicity, not a race.
-
so am i
-
Have you seen some of the spokespeople for La Raza?
I have seen 3 or 4 now, all are nearly militant and are 100% behind ILLEGAL immigrants. If she is a member of La Raza, she looses credibility with me.
-
I'm glad she was picked..I am from the Bronx.....she'll do just fine.....I am very proud of her
-
Do you think its ok for a supreme court justice to be a member of an organization like La Raza (please do some reading on La Raza), do you think its right for her to say she, as a Latina, would do better with decisions than whites? What about throwing out the promotion exams for the firefighters that did well because not enough minorities scored well. What about criticizms from some collegues that she is tempermental and legislates from the bench with loose interpretations of the constitution.
I don't know a ton about her, besides her impressive story and backround, but we cannot appoint judges who have racist tendencies or racial agendas. Anti-racist policies must apply every way.
-
I'm glad she was picked..I am from the Bronx.....she'll do just fine.....I am very proud of her
I am from the Bronx too and think there probably were dozens of better picks. What's your point?
If I am before this judge on a contract dispute or a matter involving copyright, should it matter what race she is???

Yes i have and you are making baseless accusations. They have publicly said they are for the enforcement of the US borders.
Find something else to do with your time rather than hate on everything under the guise of being an 'independent' it's obvious every single issue you lean as far right as can be and then try to disguise yourself as an independent as to have some shred of credibility. Which i might add is non-existent.

Robert Byrd is a GRAND WIZARD of the KKK and he sit in congress
If a black person were a member of the black power movement would they be confirmed????
David Duke was another GRAND WIZARD of the KKK and he was elected Governor of Louisiana
I see no reason why anyone of any race should get a pass for belonging to racist organizations.
My attitude is if you elect someone let it not be merely because they are Black, Hispanic or from Asia but because they have the intelligence and experience for the job.
None. So all of these years or better yet CENTURIES of whites picking ONLY whites should be more than an annoyance to you???
I am not trashing Obama's choice: Sotomayor, but I know he chose her merely because... and I know just like Albert Gonzalez she will do the bidding of her handlers who will make her as despicable as he was. BTW her BIO seems as PHONY as a 26 dollar bill...FISHY!!!
LaRAZA is a CIA operative...don't be fooled

Look, Obama won the election and gets his pick. Thats fine.
However, you libs have a very short memory over what was done to Clarence Thomas, Alito, Bork, and even miguel estrada.

We either are going to seek to be a color-blind society or not. of course we have a ton more to go, but it is entirely dishonest to try to get whites to accept "inclusion, divisity, etc" and all that other pc nonsense while groups like La Raza are given a free ride.

Its stated focus is on reducing poverty and discrimination, and improving opportunities for Hispanics. According to the organization's website, it is "the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the United States" and "serves all Hispanic subgroups in all regions of the country".
I don't see anything wrong with this IF Hispanics in the US are a minority and are being discriminated against, and their civil rights being violated. They need a voice too. There is nothing illegal about this.
I don't like some of the things that she has said and done, but I still don't see anything wrong with the advocacy group La Raza.

Why only focus on hispanics? Are we not all Americans first?

you and I have responded to each other's post before......I remember you are from the Bronx as well.....what I find funny is that whites are always hitting people over the head with "every person should be based on the merits, not on race"...yet many whites have never practiced this and whenever a minority ascends to an important position they scream that the pick is racist and they worry about whether whites will get a fair shake with this person....yet there is no such worry when a white is in the same position....whites just assume that the white person is already fair-minded and doesn't have a racial agenda...while every minority is ready to put minorities over everyone else......this simply isn't true...see Clarence Thomas

Oh what the fvck ever. La Raza is for border inforcement. Get your head out of your ass...
Sure, and MADD supports a national happy hour too, right?
La Raza is a collective latino gang political outlet.

There is still discrimination by whites against minorities in the US, whites focusing on whites. That is why these groups are formed.
Martin Luther King was black and he focused mainly on blank civil rights, though his movement extended to all minorities in the end. Somebody had to.
Let Hispanics focus on Hispanics if they want to. Somebody has to.

What about focusing on all americans, as americans, not because of race?

I dont disagree. However, there would be less focus on her race if this not the main thing Obama and her promoted for this pick in the first place.
For example - if you and me are in a dispute over a contract, would you care more about her judicial history and philosphy??? Or her race, favorite baseball team, or background??? For me, I want a judge who is known to be by the book, impartial, and able to divorce himself/herself from their personal beliefs on matters. The court is not supposed to be an extension fo the legislative branch.
Litigants before the court should have their cases based solely on the merits of their respective cases, not the personal agenda of the judge.
She may be a great judge, however, tell me about her mertis as a judge, not the fact that she is a "latina".
And by the way, there are many incompetent whites in positions solely because of their family connections and appeareance. I get that and that is totally wrong too.
I want competent people who can do the job and have demonstrated that ability without regard to the color of their skin.
-
La Raza is a very aggressive and, at times, hateful organization that represents the rights of illegal immigrants in this country.
You're very wrong about la raza.
They want:
Closed borders, total documentation of all illegals and immigrants, limited number of immigrants, and are ANTI-amnesty.

I agree with you 100%.....there is a big deal about her being Hispanic....thats a positive thing...Hispanics and others are proud.....this will die down eventually and we will focus on her as a judge, period.....
There was a big commotion made by Irish catholics when John F. Kennedy was elected.....there was also a big commotion about Lieberman running with Al Gore for vice-prez because he is a Jew....
It is normal to celebrate when you see one of your own make it....especially as a minority because it's basically been drilled into us since we were children that certain positions in society were off-limits...
Don't become afraid or focus too much on this.....minorities are just as fair-minded as whites....Once they are in the job, they will do the job without bias...period

What about focusing on all americans, as americans, not because of race?
That's a nice ideal isn't it? Infact, ...it's what both the Constitution & The Declaration of Independance call for.
Sadly, ...even 200 years afterwards, those ideals and promises had still failed to materialize... even 100 years after the prohibition of slavery these promises remained unkept and unfulfilled... hence the birth of the NAACP, the civil rights movement and organizations like La Raza. If you feel you have a problem with the existence of advocacy groups, ...recognize the advocacy group isn't the problem, ...but rather a symptom of the problem. The real problem is the systemic discrimination, and disregard for the issues affecting segments of society; issues these advocacy groups seek to address.
-
Oh please. There are literally tens of millions of poor whites who dont get squat in this society either.
Not because they have been oppressed and discriminated against by minorities.
And the whites who are wealthy and do have great jobs, have all of them always gotten those jobs on merits alone?
If the formed a group like "The Race" and just advocated for poor whites, would you be ok with that?
Yes, I would be okay with that if whites are being oppressed and discriminated against, and their voices are not being heard. If that were the case, then they should form such advocacy group so that their voices are heard and so that others are made aware of this.
What about focusing on all americans, as americans, not because of race?
I agree! That's the way it should have been from the beginning. Had the white majority done this from the beginning, there would have never been a civil rights movement, there would be no Affirmative Action, and there wouldn't be groups like La Raza.

That's what you dont get, and what most minorities I have met mistakenly believe. "Whites" are not a monolithic group of people who all think "white". Its typical nonsense that I hear from blacks and hispanics all the time that makes me think they are just as much part of the problem as are racist whites. The Italo-american from the Bronx like myself, has NOTHING in common with with the Mormon from UTAH. I have far more in common with the Puerto Rican or Dominican from Washington Heights than I do a southern white guy from Alabama, despite my skin color.
There is no such thing in America as a typical "white" person. That only exists in the minds of minorities with their own set of racist stereotypes.
For example - I am of Italo heritage. Do you think WASPS from Greenwich or Jews from Scarsdale consider me just like them??? I get stereotyped in all the same ways you claim whites do to minorities. No one is crying for me, and I dont want, expect, or like other people of my heritage whining like other groups over stereotypes. Its embarassing.
Instead, I prefer to be judged by my own accomplishments and doings and let that speak for itself. This is why asians and indians get a ton of respect in this country, and deservedly so. Asians dont cry like little whiny bitches over every little sterotype, they just move forward, advance, excel, and command respect for their actions and achievments.
Do you even for a second think an italo-American from the Bronx is welcome at a WASP country club in Bronxville? Do you think Russians, Albanians, Portugese, or other ethnic whites are included in these upper elite country clubs or social circles? No, its not about skin color.
Let me tell you something, I graduated law school top of my class, editor of the law review, and did all the right things. I tried very hard to get into the elite law firms down NYC. Most of these firms were run by WASPS & Jews. Do you think I even got an interview despite my academic record? No.
I was unemployed for 9 months after law school and worked at Bally Total Fitness as a trainer until I had a shit job making $12.00 an hour until I eventually opened up my own business doing what I do now. I was not going to let those miserable assholes determine my future and worth. Looking back, I am glad I made the choices I did since I now call my own shots and am not told by anyone what or how to do my job.
The issues in our society are more about wealth and social status, not race. Those who are always focused on race dont understand that they are keeping themselves down by focusing on that instead of personal and individual advancement.
-

Do you think not gaining membership in some country club equates to being dragged down the street chained to the back of a pickup truck? ...or hung from a tree?
Yes, discrimination is frequently these days based on wealth & social status, ...however, you're forgetting the race & ethniticy often factor into the equation when it comes to wealth & social status.

Thats funny considering Black on White violent crime is far more prevalent than White on Black crime.
Its not even close.

You are making the exact same mistake that you assume that I and that "blacks and hispanics" are making. I never said that you are racist or that you oppress or discriminate against minorities. I am not lumping all white skinned people together in one group. But you seem to be doing just that with me.
What I'm referring to is the fact that white people in America used to own black slaves for many years.
After slavery, white people in American would not allow blacks to vote or to attend the same university that whites attended.
I am referring to the fact that many whites who are NOT racist, still reap the benefits of being white in the US because they will not get discriminated against by other whites who maybe racist.
I already proved in another thread how some large companies in the US have been found to be racist against minorities, Merrill Lynch, SunTrust, Cracker Barrel. We are not talking about a few people within these companies being racist. We are talking about widespread racism coming from the top all over these companies. And we are not talking 60 years ago, but TODAY. Whether or not you are racist, as long as you are white, you would not have been a victim of racism in any of these companies.
As for your argument that Asians and Indians don't "bitch" about this like blacks and Hispanics do...first of all, Hispanics in the US have suffered more oppression than Asians and Indians. Blacks in the US have suffered much more then Hispanics. Have you ever read or heard of the "Mexican Repatriation" in the US during the Great Depression?
"Tens of thousands, and possibly more than 400,000, Mexicans and Mexican-Americans were pressured — through raids and job denials — to leave the USA during the Depression, according to a USA TODAY review of documents and interviews with historians and deportees. Many, mostly children, were U.S. citizens."
http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2006-04-04-1930s-deportees-cover_x.htm
Are you suggesting that blacks and Hispanics should have never "bitched" about being oppressed and discriminated against?
These are all facts of US past and recent history that you can't deny. And it has nothing to do with whether or not you are racist.
I understand why you don't like Affirmative Action and groups like La Raza, but these things were indirectly created by racist whites in America. Had they not oppressed and discriminated against minorities, these things would not exist.
-
What I am saying is that hispanics and blacks, who have far less graduation rates than all other groups, higher violent crime convictions, higher unwed pregnancy, and other issues like this than other groups focus on self betterment than the white boogie man under the bed.
If you want to stay focused on things of a few hundred years ago, fine, thats your perogative. However, that will not get you a better job, better job skills, opportunities and advancement.

You are still lumping all black and Hispanic people together in one group. There are plenty of blacks and Hispanics in the US who are educated, hard working and have no criminal record.
"The Venezuelan American population is highly educated. Its members have bachelor's, graduate, and professional degrees at nearly double (48.5%) the total national percentage (27%), while only 6% of the group's adults did not complete high school, compared to 15.9% of the total national population."

And let's not turn this into another blacks vs. white crime thread. We all know most serial killers in the US seem to be white males. And the "white boogie man" is not hiding under the bed. He seems to be hiding and operating at Wall Street and at many banks and corporations.
If you want to stay focused on things of a few hundred years ago, fine, thats your perogative. However, that will not get you a better job, better job skills, opportunities and advancement.
A few hundred years ago? Other than slavery, everything else that I mentioned is recent. But I am not focused on this or making this my prerogative. I am not a member of La Raza. I was simply pointing out that I don't see anything wrong with advocacy groups like La Raza, given the treatment that minorities have received throughout US history.
Like I said, I understand why you don't like Affirmative Action and groups like La Raza, but these things were indirectly created by racist whites in America. Had they not oppressed and discriminated against minorities, these things would not exist.
Hey, I don't like Hugo Chavez as president of Venezuela. But I recognize that the poor in Venezuela were pushed to vote for and elect Hugo Chavez as president after years of being oppressed and exploited by the wealthy and the corrupt politicians. Hugo Chavez is not the solution to poverty in Venezuela, but something had to be done. Had the wealthy in Venezuela not oppressed and exploited the poor, Hugo Chavez probably wouldn't be president right now.

We are in America and there is one way to get ahead, hard work, perseverance, and dedication. You know what, many times you have to take three steps back before taking steps forward. It is reality and you either deal with it, or become victim to it.
The govt is not going to do it.
Its up to you and you alone.

Hard work, perseverance, and dedication did not help those minorities at Merrill Lynch, SunTrust and Cracker Barrel until the government investigated and busted those companies. It did not help blacks before the civil rights movement.
Laws need to be passed and enforced by the government to punish and to prevent oppression and discrimination. And those laws don't seem to be passed or enforced until minorities "bitch" about it.

I was referring to those same laws. They were not passed or were not enforced until people like MLK "bitched" about oppression and discrimination.
I am also talking about those large companies today not abiding by those laws, and some white people in those companies not participating, but also not doing anything about it, until minorities "bitched" about it.
Again, hard work, perseverance, and dedication did not help those minorities in the above cases.

JESUS 3 the more you talk the more ignorant you become. I was trying to read through this thread without saying anything, but your comments make that impossible. You are the typical ignorant white. having no sense of people, races or cultures and surely have not traveled much outside of that Italian ghetto you have lived in all of your life. For one thing Italian is NOT A RACE it is a nationality and sadly one of the most ignorant of groups of people in america. I hear so many times Italians say I am not white..REALLY?... then what are you?...YOU ARE CAUCASIAN JUST LIKE THE REST OF THE WHITES...
When it comes to VIOLENT CRIMES whites are still WAAAAAAAAAAAY out in front of EVERY other people both in america and in the world. Sadly what is done by the white run press is to EXAGERATE the incidences that occur in Black or Hispanic areas while crime and violence in white areas are down played...no mystery there. I am glad given YOUTUBES and CAMERA PHONES etc a inside look into the violence of white communities is now on display before the world. With documentaries like UNTIED GATES OF AMERICA, BORN RICH and the like, EVERYONE now knows what is really happening in your communities. Even young white children and teens are now speaking up about the crime, violence, drugs, alcohol, sexual deviance etc in white communities. There is no argument you can make disputing any of these facts as they are practically MAINSTREAM now. Prisons in america are 40 percent white, 38 percent African Americans and Hispanics and the rest are other nationalities. Given the so called more intelligent/wealthy white communities WHY ARE SO MANY WHITES IN JAIL????? These numbers only reach to 40 percent for whites because the vast majority of white crimes go unreported and when reported the police intervention tries NOT to bring the parties to the precinct or file a report...as opposed to the African American and Hispanic population where the WHITE cop starts writing the report BEFORE he even gets to the scene. You can forget the WHITE dream of purity/supremacy/intelligence...IT HAS ALL BEEN ONE BIG LIE!!! Now the public see more whites being dragged into jail, more involved in drug crimes, more in domestic violence, more in poverty, more welfare/public assistance etc than ever. Up until recently unless a person was really on top of their research the LIE was pushed that the problem people where the African Americans...well now everyone knows it is the WHITES. With the collapsing economy, loss of jobs, etc these PROBLEMATIC whites are coming out of the woodwork like termites. I have posted too many time the facts and references to these facts on whites in regard to pregnancy, crime, gangs, drugs, domestic violence, alcohol etc etc etc and of course every white disputed it forever without presenting anything that proved other than what I presented. Right now america is in a depression CAUSED BY WHITE GREED...this is right after the CORPORATE SCANDAL (Enron , Alcatel, Tyco etc) in which TRILLIONS DISAPPEARED from america...which was right after the DOT COM SCANDAL where once again TRILLIONS DISAPPEARED from america...which again was after the S&L SCANDAL where TRILLIONS DISAPPEARED from america etc etc etc and guess what..WHEN THE FACES OF THESE CROOK BASTARDS WHERE DISPLAYED EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THE MUTHA FUCKAHS WERE WHITE...Not one Black, Hispanic or Asian etc. Now look at the past eight years with this fake terrorist attack and the fallout afterward...Iraq destroyed, 1.5 million killed in Iraq, 5 million sent into refugee status, Afghanistan bombed, God only knows how many killed there, TRILLIONS missing through the Pentagon and Department of Defense, Patriot ACT comes into being to destroy your america n way of life, etc etc etc and once again look at the faces of those who are responsible for it all..EVERY ONE OF THEM IS WHITE.
I think your problem 3 is you are a part of the WHITE PROBLEM and you wish not to be perceived as such so you keep looking to blame others for the violence of whites, the destructive behavior of whites, the LIES of whites and the easiest people to attack is the African American population in america because of the WHITE history of blaming them for so many centuries. Not to worry though..the economic collapse is bringing whites down to their basal levels and soon you will be fighting your white government and your white government will be kicking your ass royally. All I ask is that the Black, Hispanic and Asian poulation in america stay out of the fight and let whites battle whites as the white hard times and difficulties are just starting for your own and will get PAINFULLY WORST before it is all over....

fact is, this filthy nasty white hating, inferiority complex having cunt was picked because she's hispanic, not because she's the most qualified.

Samson, I think you must have bi-polar disease. sometimes you post great stuff that is coherhent, factual, logical, and decent. Than, you post garbage like this. The facts do not bear out your claims, but that is another story.
My question to you is what is your solution????
Serious, you are so filled with anger and vengence that I want to know if Samson had his way what would he do????
You want to luagh, my best friend is puerto rican, and other close friends are greek, jewish, and itlians all from bronx, yonkers, queens, and brooklyn. you know what, our social situation in life binds us, not our color. These guys all come from the same type of situation as I do, and it has little to do with the color of our skin.

They didn't quite 'get it' then, ...or rather refused to admit to understanding the concept is probably more accurate.

While I cannot claim to feel like you do, I will tell you that even amongst white people, the same thing goes on within white ethnic groups.
-
Here is another thing I dont get about you Samson, you rail about whites while at the same time expressing the importance of following the Bill of Rights, especially the first and second amendments.
You do realize and admit who crafted the Constitution right????? The same people you bash and trash here by the minute.
What gives????

I'm beginning to think he does.

Independents can lean liberal or conservative without being a blind party affiliate. I often lean conservative on issues (particularly economic, taxation and gov influence into our private lives) but don't follow any republican party line. I don't care for the 2 party system at all, which pits us against one another without openly examining issues. I may not comment as much on more liberal thoughts that I agree with, perhaps I am not as passionate on some of them or they have had enough recent public support in criticizm....ie the Iraq war (which was a disaster). I am also far from a right winged religious zealot. The country has shifted left. I identify most closely with Ron Paul, whatever label you want to assign to that. Libertarian/conservative perhaps.
As far as credibility, no one on this board is omnipotant and for you to criticize my 'credibility' without knowing much about me personally or professionally shows immaturity. Like everyone here, I am in a constant state of learning...but that doesn't prevent me from commenting on my life's experiences, educated opinions or wisdom I have gained.

There must be confusion on La Raza (or likely differing opinions within the organization... and some one sided info from people here). Not to say that La Raza doesn't have some worthy goals but they at very least questionable with certain strong opinions. 240, where do you get that La Raza is not a pro-amnesty group? There are articles all over the place from La Raza officials advocating amnesty and a loosening of the border, in addition to heavy criticizm of state and local enforcement of anti-illegal immigration laws.
Sonia Sotomayor 'La Raza member'
American Bar Association lists Obama choice as part of group
By Joe Kovacs
© 2009 WorldNetDaily
As President Obama's Supreme Court nominee comes under heavy fire for allegedly being a "racist," Judge Sonia Sotomayor is listed as a member of the National Council of La Raza, a group that's promoted driver's licenses for illegal aliens, amnesty programs, and no immigration law enforcement by local and state police.
According the American Bar Association, Sotomayor is a member of the NCLR, which bills itself as the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the U.S.
Meaning "the Race," La Raza also has connections to groups that advocate the separation of several southwestern states from the rest of America.
Over the past two days, Sotomayor has been heavily criticized for her racially charged statement: "I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experience would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life."
The remark was actually made during a 2001 speech at the University of California's Berkeley School of Law. The lecture was published the following year in the Berkeley La Raza Law Journal.
-------------------------
"Founded in 1968 as the Southwest Council of La Raza, the National Council of La Raza (NCLR) is the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the United States. It works "to improve opportunities for Hispanic Americans," who are, in its estimation and definition, an oppressed minority that suffers much injustice and discrimination in American society"
"Many members of LaRaza have pushed an open-border policy". They have also backed the Fairness Doctrine

U.S. Rep. King: Pro-amnesty group receives $950,000 in omnibus
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Congressman Steve King today made the following comments about a $950,000 earmark for the National Council of La Raza, a pro-amnesty organization, in the omnibus spending bill that passed the House Wednesday and is currently under consideration in the Senate.
“Hard-working Americans ought to be outraged that this liberal spending spree includes a giveaway to a pro-amnesty group,” King said. “American taxpayers do not support La Raza’s agenda or its position in support of amnesty for illegal aliens. At a time of great economic unrest, the last thing Congress should be doing is handing out cash to apologists for immigration law breakers.”
The $950,000 earmark for La Raza is in the Transportation/HUD portion of the omnibus bill. The funds are designated for “capitalization of a revolving loan fund to be used for nationwide community development activities.”

Few will argue against the evils of historical discrimination (and if they do, they are ignorant). Discrimination has come from many groups against many different peoples. Many forget that Africans were oppressed and discriminated against by their own people and by the Spanish Moors, who were the most powerful force early in the slave trades.
The important issue is how to overcome discrimination and create better societies. We cannot accomplish this easily with policies that look to correct past wrongs by reverse discrimination. This creates a victimhood and entitlement mindset and creates new resentment by younger generations who see preferential treatment and two sets of standards without experiencing the same institutional racism of the past. We also must not feel embarrassed or guilty to criticize maladaptive behavior and culture for fear of being labeled racist, which is the case now.
I would argue that in this day, blacks have been given at least as many or more opportunities compared to the discrimination that still exists from an institutional perspective because of Affirmative Action and attempting to 'right past wrongs'. There will always be some personal/individual discrimination based on sex, skin color, age, height, body habitus, religion, employment, etc. A society looks to appropriately punish (and correct) institutional racism but shouldn't create policies that cause more problems or continue the same behaviors in a different manner. We shouldn't continue to force people into separate groups with different rules. What is 'white' anyway...white people are the most diverse group of people in the world, different skin shades, cultures, traditions, languages. Many 'white' people have far more in common with asains, hispanics or blacks based on common interests, language and cultures. I disagree there is still a universal grand scale 'white advantage'...tell that to russian immigrants and see what they say (I know many). Skills and competence shine most highly in the workplace, particularly in a capitalistic society...the color with most meaning is green.
I would also point out that the media and whole entertainment industry have pushed black Americans preferentially in the last 1-2 decades, an opportunity not granted to any other minority group in such force. Media defines culture and there have been incredible shifts the past 2 decades that place young black Americans ahead of other groups.
