The Wizard of Oz was a statement about bimetallism.   Dorothie's slippers in the novel were Silver slippers.

They were changed to RUBY because the slippers represented the RIGHTS/LIFE of a person. In the movie  the good witch makes a comment to Dorothy which has gone unnoticed by many that says... Never take off those shoes because once you do they will do with you whatsoever they will. In short once government has taken away your RIGHTS they can then do to you anything their hearts desire...which is the path america is walking down now.
