A few years ago, we were at a special panel, and we saw the beginnings of this, in which the motion capture device would record you and put you and a friend surfing, or playing volleyball on a giant screen. But i am amazed at how much advanced this new technology has become. Obviously, this isnt just for Xbox, but will eventually bring in television, computer, telephone and more in a box component gadget.
It looks great.... and will eventually be good for all those schmoes who cant get a date Saturday night :)

At the end of their E3 Keynote Microsoft finally showed off the motion sensor technology that they have been working on for so long called Project Natal. Rather than going with a physical controller that you hold and move they are developing a multiple-angle multiple-camera device with a microphone and some serious new image, motion, voice and facial recognition software.

Not anytime soon... Nintendo is crushing them all... and for good reason. The Wii is the most fun you have with a console.
The PS3 is nice too, I love mine, but my Wii is still the party console.

Project Natal has a real promising aspect. Think of using this for the Mr. Getbig. It scans your entire body and scales it to size and then captures your motion.
You could have a real virtual posedown with this thing.

No. The more immersion and interactive by far the better. Pushing buttons and not caring about the story and moral dilemmas are for pattern seeking morons who would be happy playing solitaire or connect four for hours on end.

Actually, it would be good for a mix of games. The sports related games would be cool, but sometimes you want to play games to relax.
Video games are the great nerd equalizer. If they actually had to PERFORM the kartae kick, it would be a different story.

Very true. I hope there is a way to play it, with a controller. I do my working out at the gym....when I play games, I wanna chill and forget about the world, which includes exercise.

exactly...if i wanna action i would do it life...there is nothing better than playing good ol God of war or Call of Duty in the sofa or under the blankets, and SPECIALLY not having all my family around me seeying me jumping like a phucking ape...The chalenge is mental...
sorry, i know the idea its cool, but i just dont like the concept...video games always envolved through the years, and i want to see that, not a new way to play them. Give me better graphics, better games, better controls, dont make me jump and move myself as i was in a phucking dance class, playing games with 90´s graphics

Wii purchases are on the down stoke. Japan sales have plummeted which means the US is close to follow. The wii, has very little adult titles. The last 2 matrue rated games that came out did horrible and with sales like that it makes it harder to find developers who want to invest money and time into flops..

The install base is already massive... the PS3 is the one with the growth room. Everyone who wants a Wii or a Xbox360 already has one.
Everything I'm reading shows the Wii sales while down, are still doing fairly decent in both the US and Japan.

I like the idea, and the technology is awesome, but I can see a lot of problems with it. When you've got four people sitting there playing it, how does it differentiate someone playing or simply moving in their seat? Also, if its aimed at kids, how many kids have a large enough bedroom to have 6' square clear playing space in front of their TV's? And finally, like a lot of others have mentioned, what if I've just come home from work and just wanna chill out on the sofa?
It could be awesome, but it could also be just a novelty, like the Wii. I got a Wii, and play it occasionally, but I always go back to the PS when I want to have a proper game, because the graphics, gameplay, etc. are much better.

exactly...I think this is going to try and be the Wii competition. Not for serious gamers. As a parent, I would get my kids something like this. Several uses -
Family time
30hr a day after homework to make sure they are getting exercise
getting energy out when stuck they are stuck in the house on a rainy day (8 months out of the year here in Seattle)
it has it's uses ...but again I don't see this being an adult console.

You are on holiday in Bali with your 18 year old son and wife. You have been there for a week and are ready to head home. All three of you are at the airport getting ready to board your plane, when an armed officer comes around with a sniffer dog. You have all your bags on a trolley, and the dog sniffs at both your wife and your bag, and passes over it, however when he gets to your sons bag, he begins to get a bit more active.
You look over at your son and he’s looking a little nervous. You know he’s smoked a little marijuana in his time, but generally, he’s a good kid, and you certainly didn’t think he’d actually be stupid enough to bring it back on the plane with him. At first you feel angry that he would do such a thing and start planning your responsibility lecture, but then you realize that you are in Bali, and they have a zero tolerance policy on drugs, meaning your son could be jailed for life, or worse, executed, if he does have some illicit materials in his bag.
You look at your wife and realize she has come to the same conclusion and has gone pale with fear.
The armed officer accompanying the dog is beginning to look more stern with every sniff the dog takes and looks directly at you and asks you to open to the bag.
You do, and as the officer begins to take things out of the bag, you see to your horror that there is a small quantity of marijuana stashed in with your sons belongings.
The officer looks at you and asks “Who’s bag is this?”
You realize you have to answer, but the answer won’t be easy. You see your wife in the corner of your eye, and she is about to step forward and claim it as her own; what do you say?

I think the video said it had facial recognization technology, so moving spots technically wouldn't effect it.
I agree with your last paragraph. The gaming portion of Natal is a little gimmicky, but as long as they don't try to incorporate it into every single game, it will be fine. It will broaden the appeal. It's better for kids, anyway. I liked it more for the non gaming aspects of it.
If they do try to make it for every game, it will alienate the hardcore gamer they've acquired. It would make it impossible for me to play games without spilling my Maker's Mark.
