Obama says Iran's energy concerns legitimate

LONDON -- President Barack Obama reiterated that Iran may have some right to nuclear energy _ provided it takes steps to prove its aspirations are peaceful.
In a BBC interview broadcast Tuesday, Obama also restated plans to pursue direct diplomacy with Tehran to encourage it to set aside any ambitions for nuclear weapons it might harbor.
Iran has insisted its nuclear program is aimed at generating electricity. But the U.S. and other Western governments accuse Tehran of seeking atomic weapons.
"Without going into specifics, what I do believe is that Iran has legitimate energy concerns, legitimate aspirations. On the other hand, the international community has a very real interest in preventing a nuclear arms race in the region," Obama said.
The comments echo remarks Obama made in Prague last month in which he said his administration would "support Iran's right to peaceful nuclear energy with rigorous inspections" if Iran proves it is no longer a nuclear threat.
Iranian state television described the news as Obama recognizing the "rights of the Iranian nation," a phrase typically used to refer to Iran's nuclear program.
The president has indicated a willingness to seek deeper international sanctions against Tehran if it does not respond positively to U.S. attempts to open negotiations on its nuclear program. Obama has said Tehran has until the end of the year to show it wants to engage.
"Although I don't want to put artificial time tables on that process, we do want to make sure that, by the end of this year, we've actually seen a serious process move forward. And I think that we can measure whether or not the Iranians are serious," Obama said.
Obama's interview offered a preview of a speech he is to deliver in Egypt this week, saying he hoped the address would warm relations between Americans and Muslims abroad.
"What we want to do is open a dialogue," Obama told the BBC. "You know, there are misapprehensions about the West, on the part of the Muslim world. And, obviously, there are some big misapprehensions about the Muslim world when it comes to those of us in the West."
Obama leaves Tuesday evening on a trip to Egypt and Saudi Arabia aimed at reaching out to the world's 1.5 billion Muslims. He is due to make his speech in Cairo on Thursday.
Obama sounded an optimistic note about making progress toward resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, although he offered no new ideas for how he might try to secure a freeze on new building of Israeli settlements. The United States has called for a freeze, but Israeli leaders have rejected that.
Asked what he would say during his visit about human rights abuses, including the detention of political prisoners in Egypt, Obama indicated no stern lecture would be forthcoming.
He said he hoped to deliver the message that democratic values are principles that "they can embrace and affirm."
Obama added that there is a danger "when the United States, or any country, thinks that we can simply impose these values on another country with a different history and a different culture."

Sounds great in an ideal world but Iranian leaders are insane, caught up in a backward religion and blinded by their own pursuit of power.
-
Yes, because the #2 producer of oil IN THE WORLD needs nuclear power for 'peaceful' energy pursuits. ::)
-
Yet under Obama the US will not build one new plant.Incredible!
-
That's ok.... We can just buy more oil.

Rank Country Production
1 Saudi Arabia 10,248
2 Russia 9,874
3 United States 8,457
4 Iran 4,034
5 China 3,912
6 Mexico 3,500
7 Canada 3,422
8 United Arab Emirates 2,948
9 Venezuela 2,670

11 Norway 2,565
12 Nigeria 2,353
13 Brazil 2,250
14 Algeria 2,174
15 Iraq 2,097
My guess is that nuclear power would allow Iran to export more oil and thus earn more money.

Well fuck me.... I was off by a couple slots.
Point still stands.
My guess is that uranium costs a lot more than oil....

But they have no uranium to export and tons of oil to export. Makes sense to use (as posted above) nuclear power and sell the excess oil for profit.
I've stated before that i have no problem with Iran using nuclear power the steps to ensure it stays that way will come through diplomacy not through tough talk and sanctions. If anything that will deepen the resolve of Iran to pursue a nuclear weapon, which, no one is even 100% sure they are after anyway. And even if they were there is NOTHING any country can do about it. North Korea got the bomb despite sanctions and tough talk. It's time to give diplomacy a chance and i'm glad Obama is.

You can squawk, you can yell, you can complain, you can denounce, condemn etc...
It doesn't matter what Obama thinks, the world thinks, or what you think.
Iran will be nuclear power and the only to prevent that, is to invade it. That ain't likely to happen. And then still, it will become a nuclear power some day just as most of the rest of the world will become at some point.
-
And if ur gonna accept that, u better except missile shields and "star wars' programs. Obama is a fool and just confirmed to the Israeli's that they're fucked with this guy.

I've always thought a missile shield is a good idea.
I disagree about the Israel thing. Nuclear Iran is certain.

Might be certain....but oddly Nkorea is racheting up their BS, Iran has racheted up their BS....and Obama is the President. Carter Redux.....the gift that keeps on giving.

Oh come on... Hezbolla shot rockets when Bush was in Office. Korea launched Missiles when Bush was in office.
Do you have the memory of a gnat? Or do you forget that those countries were pushing GWB just the same... Mostly because they knew we were spread out too thin with 2 wars going on.
Did you forget these things happened or did you just ignore it?

Obama says Iran's energy concerns legitimate
Obama's statements seem to coincide with the official US position on Iranian nuclear energy back in the 1970's.
Even then, Iranian officials recognized their country's future energy needs, ...as did the US.
The big difference is that while these future energy needs were recognized & identified, Iran took steps to meet them, ...and the US voted in the Reagan Republicans who ignored the issue domestically and set the country on a path, the neglectfulness of which has culminated in what we are seeing today.

It wouldn't matter who is in office. This crap was going on when BUSH was in charge and it didn't stop anything. So telling yourself or anyone else that its a Carter or Obama Democrat thing is pure propaganda and untrue. Ronald Reagan couldn't stop this right now. Unless of course the country as a whole decided they should reinstate the draft and invade every country that goes nuclear.
We are gonna have to deal with this. Get used to it.

Hard to argue there.
NK and Iran developed their nuke programs on whose watch exactly? ;)

I think that Israel will do anything to prevent being wiped off the map. Half their country wants to take out Iran right now and Israel won't pussyfoot around like Barry will.

Folks, don't believe the hype & the rhetoric. Israel is scared of Iran, there's no question about it,
...however, the fear is not a military one. No way does Iran's military have the power to go up against Israel's.
The fear is also not a nuclear one either. The fear is an economic one. While everyone has been dicking around thrying to construct a pipeline through Afganistan ... a project that has been stalled and beseiged with setbacks for years, ...Iran is busy putting together a pipeline through India & Pakistan, that will pump gas from Iran throughout the region. That pipeline threatens to upset the economic balance within the region and make Iran a superpower within the region. THAT above all else is what Israel cannot abide. It does not want to see iran gain a foothold of strength within the region which will be extremely difficult to topple once it occurs. They're not afraid of Iranian nukes, ...they're afraid of Iranian political power. Their real fear is not in Iranian nukes, but Iran's pipeline. That is the big threat, ...and it's looking more & more like that pipeline will be coming to fruition. Of course it's opponents want to derail it with a little timely instability in Pakistan, ...but it looks like it is right on track nonetheless.

You ever look at how Iran government works? It's a weird deal. That guy was spouting off rhetoric that's all. Israel knows that. Additionally Israel doesn't have what it takes to invade and occupy Iran. So anything they say outside of quick strikes that will do little other piss off everyone in the ME more, is rhetoric too.
BUSH wouldn't do a dam thing either. He didn't do jack about NK or Iran while in office because there isn't much that can be done short of invading and occupying. The idea that "Obama" won't do anything because he's a dem is pure propaganda, BUSH started the Bail out Buffet, Over Spent into the red, got us into a useless war, and didn't do anything about NK or Iran.
