Yesterday I found out I failed my personal trainer cert exam. What do you think I should do, Bast? Continue living a meek lifestyle, like your local hermit on the eternal quest for truth, or should I suck it up and get any job I can just so I can be like everyone else, pay bills and with whatever money is left finally get a car and buy mindless video games?
-
exactly

I'd love to do a creative job like writing, art, etc. I feel I'm good at these things but it's difficult to make a career out of.
People who use personal trainers are lazy; I wouldn't want to train lazy people. Plus I would get sick of the gym very fast.

i hate when people tell me how bad they want to be personal trainers.
let me tell you something, personal training is ALL SALES (/spoiler)
you know those car salesmen that do ads on TV- well, if you were to give them a issue of muscle and fitness and have them study it and then give them a shirt that says "personal trainer" on the back and i am willing to bet 1000 dollars that they would make more money than any well muscled trainer with a NASM cert
-
I used to be a teacher for almost 7 full years. burned out, went back to community college. Got computer certs then MBA.
If you're looking at being a personal trainer, ask coach a few Qs. He makes a great living.

I was an electrical engineering major in school. I broke into local radio in Houston without finishing school and worked at a news/talk station for 24 years. I produced call in shows on a wide variety of subjects(agriculture, gardening, medicine, politics, home improvement, sports) and worked in master control, and after 24 years I was laid off by a famous and widely vilified broadcasting company. I got a job with a small telecommunications company installing microwave links between Verizon cell phone sites. nine days short of one year on the job I was laid off again in February. I have been unemployed since then and have had no luck getting any sort of job...so yeah I have changed careers.

Just do it again, no reason to turn a set back, like a failure on 1st attempt into a life altering choice.
No quitting. Quiting is something people who accomplish nothing do indulge in.

people are not made to sit in little cubicles all day.

Worked 15 years at a shitty blue collar job...though the pay wasn't too shabby.....went back to college and I'm now partnered with a friend of mine to work for ourselves. We scored a nice juicy new contract today too.
Life is good.

See it as an opportunity...alot of people are 'stuck' in relatively mindless desk jobs and never ever leave them only because they couldn't or wouldn't think outside of the box. If you lose your job instead of trying to go back to the same work (that is if you don't really enjoy it anyway) find something completely different but look for something that also has a future in it. However you probably wouldn't want to listen to me as I went from reasonably entertaining work that was ok paid to a mindless desk type job that is extraordinarily well paid - I thought money would make all the difference but while it has helped ease my pain I certainly don't want to do what I'm currently doing for ever.
I see me becoming a consultant again - it's on the horizon - 3 day work week - 2 days golf - train went I want etc etc. Ah the dream...

what was the entertaining work you did before?
-
well maybe 'entertaining' is a stretching it a little - did a wide variety of things from working in clubs, construction, bouncing, plumber, demolition, basically hands on kinda stuff.

I can relate to you here Bast...

I would have been laid off so good thing i switched up.

Spot on post! When I graduated from high school, I was going to become a personal trainer and there wasn't damn person on earth who was going to tell me other wise. After doing some internships, I quickly changed my intrests in area of study within a few days.
