Paul Weller is aces. But to answer your question.: The Jam is superior to the Pistols, but inferior to The Clash. Both are on high rotation, tho. :)
-
Have you guys seen the reformed "From The Jam", featuring Bruce Foxton, Rick Buckler, and a Paul Weller clone?
-
I like the Kinks, they do many Jam songs

Kinks are brilliant. Kind of fallen off the radar over here in N. America, tho. Was listening to Muswell Hillbillies just the other day. :)

Man listen to Lola and David Watts,2 classics

I want to be like Da-vid Watts! The Jam covered it really nicely. Just went and found my copy of Compact Snap and am listening to it right now. Brilliant!

Hmm...this is a tough one. One could make a case for Stiff Little Fingers, or The Buzzcocks, (for first wave european punk bands). Still the Clash probably trumps them all.

I'll go along with The Buzzcocks...also The Damned, 999, The Vapors

Paul Simonon actually didn't even know how to play the bass. I believe it was Glenn Matlock who played on the first couple of albums. The Clash couldn't touch The Jam.
-
Glen Matlock was the original bass player in The Sex Pistols, in the U.K in the mid to late 70's the pistols were THE iconic punk band, closely followed by the others mentioned, it was a crazy time in the U.K in 77....God SAve ThE qUEeN

Love the Jam. Unlike the Pistols(who did a handfull of good tunes) and the Clash(who did more and were better in terms of songwriting) The Jam had a singer with a good voice.
Weller on his own is still great. A legend of British music.
His work with the Style Council is also worth a look.
With perhaps the exception of this The video for 'Long Hot Summer'. Possibly the gayest video ever
(i'm a dumbass who couldn't figure out how to embed the video)

Weller is a prententious twat

The Smiths?
The Smiths are one of the most iconic bands to come out of the UK. With Marr's guitar skills and Morrissey's lyrics their music is unique and sublime.
The Jam are also a class act and again, like the smiths quite unique in their sound.
Have to say i love both bands.

I just picked up The Jam's "This Is The Modern World" and "All Mod Cons" together on one disc. The three of them were great musicians...awesome band.
-
strummer was the man ,voice, swagger, political point of view,satire,reggae,3 cord rock the clash were great.
-
yes the sex pistols and the clash and the jam were great but Cock Sparrer were around at the same time and are still going and are still great
