Unfortunatly that is very true!!  It took buckhead and a whole host of guitarists to do what it took just Slash and Mckagen with just two guitars to do.

When it comes to fame, yes. Actual talent, Slash is nowhere near Buckethead's level.

i don't like those dudes like buckethead and morello.  they're "all effects".  buckethead strums a chord and then taps the kill switch for a while.  not to say i could do it, but it's gay.  i guess you could say the same about page and his bow playing, but still.

What was good about that? I thought it was sloppy and boring as hell. Maybe if he wasn't drunk and high at the time it would've sounded better.

I thought the same about Buckethead for the longest time, until I finally started listening. Don't get fooled by the schtick and his technical skills. He has tons of feeling and emotion when he plays.

My bad. lol

Seriously, Slash was my first guitar idol. I first picked up the guitar in '91 because of him. As I progressed, I got into Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Yngwie (the usual virtuosos). Didn't give Buckethead a minute of my attention as I thought he was all schtick. Who would've thought he was prolific in clean guitar? Now I prefer his kind of music above all else. I'm done with trying to be the fastest picker, or the one who could play the cleanest sweep arpeggios (all of which Buckethead can do quite effortlessly). I could never be technically prolific, so I just try to enjoy playing instead of getting frustrated.
He just needs to get rid of that mask already, though.

That is not a fair comparison, though. You're talking about a timeless, iconic song. Slash didn't even mean for the guitar intro to sound that way as he was just doodling. If it wasn't for Axl insisting on using that, the song wouldn't be what it is today.
How many songs fit that category where the guitar is the most memorable part? And I'm talking worldwide recognition, not just guitarists/rockers.

Thunderstruck
Top Gun Anthem

At the moment I can only think of two.

I agree about Sweet Home Alabama, but AC/DC songs would mostly only appeal to the rockers, not the ones who listen to other genres, the only exception is Thunderstruck because you hear it everywhere, especially in ball games.

No, not quite. A layperson wouldn't know 'reeling in the years,'  I don't know it. 'Layla' might be okay just because of Goodfellas. If you weren't a Clapton fan you probably won't know it. Besides, the guitar wasn't the most memorable part of that song, it was the chorus and the 2 hour outro.

Classical guitarists are much more technically impressive.

there's not distortion to hide imperfections.

Here's a great technique demonstration , and the second one is just a GREAT TUNE

Different techniques, different skillsets. I tend to agree, though, that the 'clean' guitarists tend to be more prolific than the shredders.

Andy McKee has enough technical skills and actual melody that almost everyone will enjoy his music.

I personally think Yngwie is cool and funny as hell for his tasteless OTT notes-per-minutes Neo-Classicisms, and doesn't pretend to be classy like Vai, just loves what he is, a big fat show off.

Anyway, check this guy out, he worked in the guitar shop I worked in last year.

He now plays with Tommy Emmanuel, a total badass I've had the pleasure of seeing live. Great stuff. Cudos to the Paco De Lucia link posted by someone above also.

seriously.....i never gave buckethead alot of thought, not that he cares, lol......i dont usually like gimmicks

but he is not a gimmick, it is truely amazing what he can do......he is in very rare air, he is a guitar player's guitar player...........many people like that might never become the biggest star power or financial success, but short of satriani or malmsteen, if you asked any guitarist anywhere who they fear it would be buckethead

i kind of understand the bucket more now too.......he wants to remove the person to person interface while he is playing, putting people fully in touch with the music, with no other distractions......i can kind of respect that

Petrucci is a good example of technicality over any kind of feel. 'Live another day' is cool but mostly because of the soprano sax.
