Awesome

Slash>Buckethead
-
Unfortunatly that is very true!! It took buckhead and a whole host of guitarists to do what it took just Slash and Mckagen with just two guitars to do.
-
Slash>Buckethead
When it comes to fame, yes. Actual talent, Slash is nowhere near Buckethead's level.
-
my favorite Buckethead song... Soothsayer.

Not to offend but how old are you?

any serious guitar player knows slash is shit.
-
i don't like those dudes like buckethead and morello. they're "all effects". buckethead strums a chord and then taps the kill switch for a while. not to say i could do it, but it's gay. i guess you could say the same about page and his bow playing, but still.

Sure thats why when Velvet Revolver played in England Brian May and Jimmy Page were at the show.

Haha no but Slash can play the theme from "Godfather"

What was good about that? I thought it was sloppy and boring as hell. Maybe if he wasn't drunk and high at the time it would've sounded better.
-
lol, slash always played sloppy.

Yeah but thats who he is.I'll take sloppy with feelings over a technical shredder with with no feel any day of the week.

Gotta agree with Clavin on this one.

I thought the same about Buckethead for the longest time, until I finally started listening. Don't get fooled by the schtick and his technical skills. He has tons of feeling and emotion when he plays.

How dare you argue logically, this is Get Big >:(
-
i have no doubt that buckethead's a great guitar player as far as guitar players go. i'm just saying he'll never have a "sweet child of mine".

My bad. lol
Seriously, Slash was my first guitar idol. I first picked up the guitar in '91 because of him. As I progressed, I got into Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Yngwie (the usual virtuosos). Didn't give Buckethead a minute of my attention as I thought he was all schtick. Who would've thought he was prolific in clean guitar? Now I prefer his kind of music above all else. I'm done with trying to be the fastest picker, or the one who could play the cleanest sweep arpeggios (all of which Buckethead can do quite effortlessly). I could never be technically prolific, so I just try to enjoy playing instead of getting frustrated.
He just needs to get rid of that mask already, though.

That is not a fair comparison, though. You're talking about a timeless, iconic song. Slash didn't even mean for the guitar intro to sound that way as he was just doodling. If it wasn't for Axl insisting on using that, the song wouldn't be what it is today.
How many songs fit that category where the guitar is the most memorable part? And I'm talking worldwide recognition, not just guitarists/rockers.
Thunderstruck
Top Gun Anthem
At the moment I can only think of two.

EDWARD VAN HALEN....

I just prefer for him to be normal, instead of relying on a mask for publicity.

Intro's:
You got another thing coming....
Sweet Home Alabama
Almost all AC/DC songs

I agree about Sweet Home Alabama, but AC/DC songs would mostly only appeal to the rockers, not the ones who listen to other genres, the only exception is Thunderstruck because you hear it everywhere, especially in ball games.

Cal bringing the truth! You're a good man, Charlie Brown.

One of my faves:

buckethead unmasked when he was younger, with his old teacher shawn lane.

"reeling in the years"
"layla"

"reeling in the years"
"layla"
No, not quite. A layperson wouldn't know 'reeling in the years,' I don't know it. 'Layla' might be okay just because of Goodfellas. If you weren't a Clapton fan you probably won't know it. Besides, the guitar wasn't the most memorable part of that song, it was the chorus and the 2 hour outro.

***UPDATE*** I guess I was never a Steely Dan fan. I have heard of the song, though.

Jimmy Page has noted that that guitar solo is his favourite.

So let me follow you here.....You think "Danger Zone" by fucking Kenny Loggins is more memorable than Layla or Reeling in the years.
OK :P

He's fucking amazing...but the acts like such a penis when he plays he loses points IMO

I prefer "Lay down Sally...." and of course "Cocaine." 8)

Ouch, man! I'll be sure to pass on the message at the next guitar solo snob meeting. Wait a minute! I'm not a member. :D
-
so?
To each their own, i get that. But you would have to agree that 99.9% percent of "music buffs" would share my viewpoint.
What's his favorite rap song, The Banana Splits theme ?

haha, you ever notice that? Often great musicians have favorites that are like WTF? Out of all the great solos through all the years, that is Page's favorite? Maybe he was baked when he thought that... 8)
-

He's British. They just have bad taste, period. Have you had British food?
;D
-
Classical guitarists are much more technically impressive.
there's not distortion to hide imperfections.
Here's a great technique demonstration , and the second one is just a GREAT TUNE

Who the hell knows. Looks more like Bea Arthur these days than a leather-panted, groupie-slaying, guitar god. :-\
-
Flamenco also shits all over steve vai, satriani, malmsteen etc

Lol its alot harder to play very clean lead guitar with alot of distortion than on acoustic grandpas guitars.

Different techniques, different skillsets. I tend to agree, though, that the 'clean' guitarists tend to be more prolific than the shredders.
Andy McKee has enough technical skills and actual melody that almost everyone will enjoy his music.

I guess you're a teenager?
Soon You will realise Malmsteen freakin sucks.
You ever tried fretting a note on a classical guitar?
You will soon realise your 3 note per string shredding patterns are garbage.
Here's a true legend

Slash is the essence of a rock guitar player... you simply cannot compare this feeling and talent to Bucket's..

If we're talking MAINSTREAM guys,
Van Halen takes the Cake
-
I love classical music, but as a guitarist, I do prefer to hear it played on electric guitar. And no, I'm not talking Malmsteen's Neo-classical bullshit. He's too full of himself, and not as good as he or anyone else thinks.
Jason Becker
Paul Gilbert

The problem is there are way too many neo classical guys.
just nothing original
I like John 5 for originality
-
Greg Howe is one of the best
-
Speaking of Eddie Van Halen, I wonder what he thinks of Paul Gilbert doing this to his song. ;D
I personally think it's genius, and Paul shows his versatility and immense talent.
-
Greg Howe is one of the best
I never knew Howe played like this. I knew he was into funk guitar, but not superfast shredding. Awesome.
-
Who the hell knows. Looks more like Bea Arthur these days than a leather-panted, groupie-slaying, guitar god. :-\
Yikes! I remember reading their biography "Hammer of the Gods" and even researching Alister Crowly as a teen because of Page....haha, ah the days of youth!
-
Blockhead is a bodybuilder
-
Blockhead is a bodybuilder
yes, Blockethead is a man with muscles.
-
The michael jackson of guitar playing ;D ;D
-
Buckethead is one of the most original and talented guitar players around. Slash is ok....that's about it.
Here is me...very raw...2 improvised solos over top of each other....took me about 1/2 hour to do this.
...forgive the crappy drum machine....hahaha....
Some slower stuff too.
BTW. Slash could not play the tune in the first video I posted...no way..he can't sweep pick arpeggios, nor speed pick....but Buckethead could play it easily.
-

Paco is awesome, but I was influenced more by DiMeola. I do fingerpick, but prefer a plectrum.

Dude probably had the hand strength of a lumberjack. Playing like that involves extreme conditioning in the hands.
-
Don't ever let your dog in the same room when your playing through an amp, it will damage his ears, seriously, dogs hearing is 2x as sensitive as ours, you cruel bastard it probably has hearing damage already.
:-\
-
cant Leave out Satriani

sounds awesome, man.
btw you spelled 'yngwie' wrong.
BTW. Slash could not play the tune in the first video I posted...no way..he can't sweep pick arpeggios, nor speed pick....but Buckethead could play it easily.
-
I personally think Yngwie is cool and funny as hell for his tasteless OTT notes-per-minutes Neo-Classicisms, and doesn't pretend to be classy like Vai, just loves what he is, a big fat show off.
Anyway, check this guy out, he worked in the guitar shop I worked in last year.
He now plays with Tommy Emmanuel, a total badass I've had the pleasure of seeing live. Great stuff. Cudos to the Paco De Lucia link posted by someone above also.
-
seriously.....i never gave buckethead alot of thought, not that he cares, lol......i dont usually like gimmicks
but he is not a gimmick, it is truely amazing what he can do......he is in very rare air, he is a guitar player's guitar player...........many people like that might never become the biggest star power or financial success, but short of satriani or malmsteen, if you asked any guitarist anywhere who they fear it would be buckethead
i kind of understand the bucket more now too.......he wants to remove the person to person interface while he is playing, putting people fully in touch with the music, with no other distractions......i can kind of respect that

don't forget about Petrucci!

Petrucci is a good example of technicality over any kind of feel. 'Live another day' is cool but mostly because of the soprano sax.

Can't agree more. I went to the G3 tour a couple years ago and when he was on it was a snooze fest. The only ones into it were the Dream Theater nerds.
-
Yikes! I remember reading their biography "Hammer of the Gods" and even researching Alister Crowly as a teen because of Page....haha, ah the days of youth!
ha ha, yes me too. i met some chick in college who borrowed the book from me and i never got it back.
Crowley was great, he was ugly yet nailed hot chicks with his satanic powers. A getbigger in the truest sense.
