I don't really have one. I don't deify anyone.
Except you... ;D

Jack Daniels
Adolphus Busch
...just think how many Americans they helped get laid.

Andrew Jackson. One of the greatest presidents in history. Gave the gov't back to the people and erased the debt. The indian stuff was a little over the top though.

Talk about a false idol, or Golden Calf. My feet are definitely made of both iron and clay, bro. :)

Look up his Washington inauguration, bro. Basically the party he threw trashed the White House. It was like Animal House. Would have loved to have been there. :D
-
FDR!! Franklin D. Roosevelt was also an amazing American President and figure. I believe his face should be on Mount Rushmore instead of Teddy's.

I used to dote on him in my uni days until it dawned on me he was a moral relativist. His political forensic skills are amazing. Up there with Seymour Hersh. If you haven't seen 'Manufacturing Consent,' it's worth a watch. Very interesting guy. :)

I also look at his contributions to Linguistics. I mean, he created the science. It is pretty amazing...

Absolutely. Good point. Maybe even a more important contribution. They still hold to this day and look better and better, or seem to hold truer. Amazing stuff right out of the box. No wonder he is seen as an academic 'superstar.' Now, there's a guy that would bust the bank at Monte Carlo Mensa. 'Course he's a Jew, so MattC would discount him out of hand for test inflation or skewing or some such nonsense. ;D

Yup. I have to read him all the time and there are dozens and dozens of terms attributed to him or linked to him.
Right. Matzi=grudgingly admits his intelligence but as a 'Jew' clearly out to destroy the world...

LOL@ destroy the world. Sounds like a James Bond villain. Matty so likes to quantify the world, but as I get older (probably not wiser, tho!) I am really turning more to the beauty/ugliness that is unquantifiable, mostly the arts like music, literature, and artworks. How do you put a number on that stuff. Quantifying by IQ now seems so inadequate to measure such stuff. No wonder the Nazis rebelled against such stuff, or rather the stuff they couldn't understand, and co-opted what they thought they did.

Such as the talent of Michael Jackson? It is quantifiable, just not easy to do using current methods.

Hitler...well he had all the traits of a great american :D

LOL. I'll take the unquantifiable Allman Bros., Jimi, Eric, Picasso, Auden, Stravinsky, Vonnegut, Murakami, Matisse, Freud, Zeppelin, Mozart, et al. for a $1,000, please, Alex. :)

Patton was on the history channel tonight. a replay of the north africa invasion. that man knew how to command respect and make people believe in what he believed in. I'm sure there are men still bragging about a compliment he gave them 60 years ago.

Patton, along with Lincoln, FDR, and Washington, were all great studly American heroes.
Very patriot-esque thread.
-
This is why Patton is the greatest American ever!!
He captured 81,000 sq. miles of territory (size of France)
He captured over 1,250,000 prisoners (nearly 5 armies) while his army was only about 250,000
He killed or wounded over 500,000 Germans
These are the greatest accomplishments in military history!!
His men feared him more than the Germans and he knew with this mentality they would kill for him until the end (and they did).
Even Hitler and his Axis thought of him as America's greatest weapon. It's kinda funny how much respect he got from the enemies and his own allies (Eisnhower, Bradley, and the like didn't give him the respect as the enemies did).
We should have listened to him and went after the Russians because he knew they had no air strike and they were weak when the war ended. This would have saved us so many head aches in the future.
Case in point: If there was no Patton we would be worshiping Hitler and speaking German right now.
He was the King of all kings you sonofabitches!!!!!

Didn't this guy start the KKK?
-
Didn't this guy start the KKK?
In truth, no, but popular culture often credits him as having done so. Before the war, he was a slave trader, plantation owner, and one of the richest men in the South. As a Confederate general, he had successful campaigns in Tennessee and Mississippi, and he was very well respected by most Southerners. After the war, the group that met in Nashville to form what would become the KKK declared him their "Commander in Chief and Grand Dragon" as sort of a rallying point, despite his lack of personal involvement with the group. When later questioned about it, he stated that while he did sympathize with their cause, he was not actually affiliated with the organization. A reconstruction-era congressional investigation into the KKK and their activities in 1871 concluded the same.
Still, to the average man on the street, "Nathan Bedford Forrest started the KKK", which is why I think it's awesome that has been nominated as the "Greatest American that ever lived"! :D

Probably Edison. It is incredible that the U.S has never produced great geniuses in general. There is no American Gauss, LaPlace or Descartes in mathematic. No Proust, Homer or Goethe in poetry. No Dickins or Shapespeare or Dostoevsky in literature. No Newtons DaVincis and Leibnizs as polymaths. Etcc...but the U.S is great in turning ideas into products and technology and this explains why it is a great power. The greatest American was an inventor and not an abstract theoretician academic.
