Now, 99% of the time, I am a bleeding heart, whiney, liberal bitch, but I have serious problems with the growing popularity of soccer in America. Is this a huge sign that immigrants (who dont care at all about america) who have come from poor countries, with no money but to kick round objects around are taking over our nation? Basketball, baseball, football, volleyball, golf, tennis... these are not 3rd world sports. They require money, specially built playing areas, equipment, organization. Soccer requires a ball and a hoarde of unsupervised children running around screaming. Do we really want to become a nation where soccer, the most boring, generic, slow and riot inducing sport is popular? I think not.
No one who's parents and grandparents were born in america like soccer.

Very good thread!

No. Soccer is a huge sport with younger kids (younger than high school). It's not an immigrant thing for those kids, or their parents. There are parts of the country that have adult soccer leagues, and many who play in those leagues are probably immigrants, but they are outnumbered by the kids who play. Most of our best athletes abandon soccer when they get to high school.

hey man, i am really am a bleeding heart liberal... but i hate that i see kids playing soccer these days, and never baseball. they're all brown and fat too. baseball yes, kicking ball back and forth for hours no.

Well at least now they can use a real soccer ball, and not have to use the severed head of some poor bastard from the village next door anymore... :)

It works motor coordination and cardio for younger kids and I support the sport on that level. I always encourage my son to play, until he was of age to play tackle football. Some states don't allow kids to play tackle until they're 12 or based on grade. My son played soccer. I was never very ethusiastic like the rest of the parents. U get a different brand of parent at soccer. I hate the game and find it boring as all hell, especially at the pro level.

love soccer.

love soccer.
Why?

Why?
I enjoy the game. I also play in a men's league.
-
I've seen at least 10 hot latin women with Ronaldinho shirts, and more wearing Brazil shirts...If this is a result of Soccer's popularity, I say, let it keep getting popular.

We were playing soccer like crazy in Wyoming in the 70's and 80's and I'm not sure I'd ever seen a 3rd world immigrant. An occasional exchange student. It's been around forever. If it's picking up in popularity, it's probably because professional soccer is.
-
The ratings for the Confederations Cup were lower than the World Cups from the beginning of this decade. Beckham did nothing to grow the sport when he was over here. Doubt it's growing much, if at all.
-
I really wouldn't know, it's a boring sport compared to football. I just know it's been around schools forever. The popularity was just a guess.

Aren't you a Broncos fan? Football must be pretty boring watching a team lose all the time. :D

not any more. I'm teamless. :( The broncos are dead to me. >:( :( ah fuck it, I don't need a team to love football.

1. Fútbol(soccer) is very very popular in rich developed countries such as those in Western Europe.
2. In poor countries such as Cuba, Dominican Republic and Venezuela, Baseball is much more popular than Fútbol, and just as popular as it is in the US.
-
Poor countries also excel in football; the South Americans for example - football is a religion in Brazil for instance.
Sadly the arrogance of Americans with their love for watching advertisements and commercially designed sports fail to understand the beautiful game and how it transcends every level of society.

Yup, Pele and Maradona("coke snorting fat bastard" ;D) are some of the best and most popular players in the world.

Soccer is ok I guess but the field is too big and they don't score enough goals (from a spectator's view).
How about importing more rugby...thats a man's sport.

Piss off! If they didn't let other teams win once in awhile they wouldn't want to play anymore.
Aren't you a Ravens fan by rights?

not exactly my good chap.
american football > greatest sport ever
-
Yeah. Nothing beats the real game of football. :) I'd rather watch paint dry than sit through a soccer match that ends 1-0.
-
Oh so you equate a great sport with high scoring games? The rest of the world disagrees with you.
-

Partly, yes. Are you going to tell me the most exciting part of a soccer match is not when they score? Scoring is the most exciting part of pretty much any sport.
But there are other things involved. Football players are also better athletes. It's a much harder game. Much more strategy involved. It's far more entertaining, etc.
But I do remember a funny quote by someone (George Will?), who said football combines two of the worst aspects of our society: violence and committee meetings. :)
-

Sure scoring is always exciting. To get from one end of the pitch to the other all players working together is a beautiful thing to watch. you have to develop an appreciation for it. :)

I hear you. I actually like playing it, but I play softball every week and I'd never watch a softball game on TV either. I just have a hard time seeing myself watching guys run up and down the field for over an hour with very little, if any, scoring.

I have a hard time watching to unless I have some vested interest. If I know the people playing (local game), ancestors country ... cheer for them in world/euro cup or if I bet on it (league game) and I always watch the big tourneys cause they only happen every four years. Ohter than that I can't be bothered cause there is so many other things to do. ... I wouldn't say I'm hardcore but I'll defend soccer cause it's one of the greatest sports in the world.

That's sort of like me and golf/tennis. I'll watch golf only when Tiger is playing and tennis only when the Williams sisters are on, or an American is playing in a grand slam final.

No it's not the most important thing. Clearly you don't understand real football. There is a flow and an art to real football. Your issues with it come from some kind of phantom position of superiority; you believe your athletes are better and American football is more tactical. Wrong on both accounts. Sure a European footballer would get crippled in the NFL; but an American footballer would fair equally as bad in a footy game. As for tactics, there are probably more variables in American football, which is also part of its ugliness IMO.
Real football is the most competitive sport on Earth. You guys play yourselves and deem it a "World" series... when you get other countries involved with several hundred million more supports get back to me regarding that point. Oh and as for entertaining; that's in the eye of the beholder - but to be frank I don't like advertisements much.

About the "World Series" thing - ever noticed that the NBA kinda started to downplay the whole "World Champs" part of winning the NBA championships after USA got their asses kicked in a few World champs?
-

That's the mentality I'm talking about.
What annoys me is the effort the US "soccer" lads put in in the Confederations Cup, one of them was passionate enough to cry having lost to Brazil - yet the American populace is too ignorant, arrogant and brainwashed to understand the aspects of a real football match. The obsession with high scoring games just boggles my mind... it's a juvenile argument. Some of the best games have been draws or 1 - 0 wins... more often than not watching Chelsea or Manchester United batter some lesser team 5 - 0 is an utterly unrewarding experience.
-
I love it when euros get all butt-hurt about soccer.
Soccer sucks... but I guess you guys have got to have something, eh?

I've watched and played both real football and soccer. Night and day. There is skill and athleticism involved in soccer, but not nearly to the same degree as real football. Skill position football players in real football combine speed, quickness, agility, strength, strategy, and smarts. Have you ever seen a playbook? Do you know how many plays and formations a real football player has to learn? Do you know much time players spend watching film, preparing game plans, and practicing?
There are good athletes who play soccer worldwide, and it’s a fun sport to play, but we just don't care enough about soccer in this country to push our best athletes into the sport. If we did, we'd dominate soccer the way we dominate football and basketball.
Also, we don't kill our football players when they lose games and don't trample each other to death at stadiums. :)
-
to say soccer players are better athletes than football players is pure tomfoolery at its finest

Just for clarification, real football = soccer. NFL isn't real football, historically or factually.
Real football is dynamic, not scripted like NFL. Do you honestly know how much effort the players put into tactics in real football, and how obsessive the managers are about tactics, or are you working on assumption?
The athlete issue is a null point I'm afraid, I've debunked that - and there is no rebuttal.
Apparently you don't dominate basketball; http://www.fiba.com/pages/eng/fc/even/rank/rankMen.asp as for "soccer", no matter how much money you throw at it no country will ever "dominate".
As for NFL, no other nation obviously cares enough to participate.

They're better at what they do, as are NFL athletes, is that concept beyond your intelligence?

Real football is the kind played in the United States, with an oval ball. :)
I didn't say there were no strategy or tactics involved in soccer. I'm sure there are. Just like there is strategy and skill involved in ping pong. I was talking about degree. Really no comparison.
But I will give you this: soccer managers and players have more pressure to win, because their lives may depend on it. NFL players don't have to worry about getting their knee caps busted or getting killed if they lose.
You didn't debunk anything about the athleticism involved in both sports. What you offered was an opinion and I provided a contrary opinion.
FIBA? Hahahahahahahahahahahaha! Do you even know who won the gold medal at last year's Olympics? Do you know who the best basketball players in the world are?
As for the NFL, no other country can participate because they don't have the athletes. The greatest football players in the world are in the United States. The good/great football players who don't live in the U.S. (e.g., the handful that come from American Samoa, Australia, etc.) come to the U.S. to play real football.

I don't know what level of athletes perform in IFAF world football, but USA aren't ranked 1st, see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IFAF_World_Cup
Baseball (an English creation) also isn't dominated by the USA: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baseball_World_Cup

It's not opinion tho is it? How can it be, the two sports are mutually exclusive, two athletes taking from the best NFL team and the best football team are at the highest level. I assume you thinking on the lines of: an NFL forward could beat up a footy player so the NFL player is better?!
Well, in the same breath, America... CAN'T participate, because you don't have the athletes.
Lol
Lol
Obviously I'm out of my depth fighting the good fight as a sole warrior against American's; but honestly, you can't grasp the concept, for you to disagree has no say in the truthfulness of my assertion.

Yes, this is all a matter of opinion. No, I'm not talking about beating anyone up. That's probably the soccer mentality, where losing could cost you your life. :)
I'm talking about speed, quickness, agility, strength, strategy, and intelligence. You need both to play football and soccer. What we're talking about is degree.
America sucks at soccer internationally because our best athletes don't play soccer. If athletes like Barry Sanders, Deion Sanders, Jerry Rice, Adrian Peterson, LeBron James, Kobe, Chris Paul, Vernon Davis, Michael Vick, Randy Moss, and other athletic freaks devoted themselves to soccer instead of football they would run circles around international players.

I never said you suck at it, infact you're pretty damn good - but you don't dominate - unless domination means something different in Americanese?
Please don't liken me to that moron, it greatly offends me!

Are you applying logic to your statement regarding deaths? Are you sure they aren't a result of the social problems of the said country involved? Never happened in Europe I don't think.
No they wouldn't ha ha, that's a great leap and poor logic. Do you not realise the required physical attributes are different, a different type of underlying physique is required. That's what footballers look like they do.
Kobe playing real football would run circles round Ronaldo or Kaka? HAHAHAHA!!! Your soccer lad Donovan would RAPE Kobe no matter how young Kobe started training for soccer (saying he was cloned or something).

The "logic" applied to my statements about player and fan deaths is I've heard of at least one player murdered in South (or Central) America because his team lost a game. I've also heard of numerous instances of people being trampled to death at soccer matches.
You can use the word "logic" all you want. It doesn't prove your point one bit. What "physical attributes" are you talking about? There is a pretty small category of physical and mental attributes needed to play any sport. Which ones are you referring to?
Have you ever watched Kobe play? Or the players I mentioned?
-

Well, considering real football is a global sport, deaths are likely occur at events simply because of the social issues or level of infrastructure of the countries. The trampled deaths for example were in a poorly developed African country. I'm at a loss why you pressed this point tho, it's kind like an ad hominem attack on footy.
Yes, and no matter how much you think it's based on "opinion" doesn't deviate from the facts. For example, you could say me saying organisms evolve via natural selection is just my opinion, but to be utterly truthful; it's not just my opinion, it's substantiated fact.
If you don't understand the bafflingly huge differences in physical requirements then to discuss that particular issue further would be pointless.
Not once did I say your sports were inferior, the whole premise of this thread was based on the ignorance of an American supremist.
Oh and seriously, to suggest Kobe as a "soccer" player is just ridiculous. You might play the sport, but you seriously don't understand it on the most basic levels to honestly believe him to be a good candidate.

So you say there are different physical attributes required to play soccer, but you can't say what those attributes are? List/describe those attributes and we can discuss them.

Toxic, you guys didn't convince me at first, but the performance in the final was something else.

Aaah OK, I thought you was referring to the recent World Cup qualifier in Africa. It's still a none issue, I honestly don't know what you're getting at? Have there been no deaths in NFL, shootings for instance?
Why are you trying to break this down on a per attribute basis? Players are good as general athletes, speed, endurance along with visions, power, acceleration, finess etc.

the the team would stop playing by politix and actually pick good players instead of alwaysd choosing players that had someone in the govt as a 3rd couzin etc...we might actually win the real world cup...
i will NEVER EVER EVER consider the 20s game as real cricket... >:(

I'm sure there has been an instance here or there when an NFL/college football spectator has died over the last 100 years, but it does not happen often. The most you'll see is a drunk fool getting in a fight and getting kicked out of the stadium. Definitely no stampedes. And definitely no murders because a player lost a game.
The attributes you described (speed, endurance, vision, power, acceleration, and finesse) are the same attributes needed to play football (or basketball for that matter), but there is also a huge mental component. Let's take, for example, elite running backs in football. They are incredibly fast, incredibly quick, very strong, have great vision, etc. Have you ever seen Adrian Peterson of the Minnesota Vikings play? He's 6'1", 217 pounds, incredibly quick, one of the fastest players in the NFL, can stop and cut on a dime, has outstanding vision, and is very strong. That's the kind of athlete that plays football at the highest levels in the U.S. I could list a number of players like him. I doubt we have a single American soccer player with AP's attributes.
Also, keep in mind that an NFL running back is trying to avoid getting his block knocked off, while running around, through, over, and/or away from players who are just as athletic (linebackers), fast (defensive backs), and may be 100 pounds heavier (defensive linemen). He also has to catch the ball, block, and know how to execute well over 100 different plays with a few seconds notice.

Try playing in the World Cup final, compsed of 32 of the best soccer nations on Earth - that's REAL competition with the requirement for mental focus, try taking a penalty in the World Cup final. There are specialised players in soccer, it's not every man for himself, defenders, defenders with attack focus (Brazil for example), attacking midfield, holding midfield, defensive midfield, all out strikers, second strikers, play makers, wingers etc. etc. all specialised, all with the ability to turn on a dime.
the the team would stop playing by politix and actually pick good players instead of alwaysd choosing players that had someone in the govt as a 3rd couzin etc...we might actually win the real world cup...
i will NEVER EVER EVER consider the 20s game as real cricket... >:(
True, to be honest it's Americanisation of Cricket, more commercial etc.

I agree, great point... how can two American cities evoke as much passion as England vs. Australia, England vs. Germany or Pakistan vs. India.

there is no patriotism behind a locally played game...i just cant get excited about 1 US team playing another US team...however most American born will never know the thrill of waking up 3 am in the morning..as a kid...no school the next day cause even your parents agree its ok not to go...the smell of breakfast cooking at that time while the city came alive..the neighbours up...phonecalls coming in from everywhere to makesure you r up...the agony of a single wicket..you being convinced that yourteam is losing or winning cause YOU are in the room...you peeking at every ball thru your fingers..your heart constantly thudding in your chest from fear and excitement...NOW THAT IS CRICKET 8)

Do you mean football? ???
;D

Do you think it takes more mental focus to play soccer or QB in the NFL?
Is it more difficult to take a penalty in a soccer match, or for a WR to be hit by a LB or DB while airborne making a catch? How about a RB getting hit by several guys who outweigh him by 50 to 100 pounds? What about getting hit while returning a kick or punt by someone who has about a 40 to 50 yard running start?
Speed, quickness, agility, stopping on a dime, finesse? Did you ever watch Barry Sanders play? Take about 3.5 minutes and watch this clip.

No it isn't. Same skill set involved in both sports: speed, quickness, agility, strength, endurance, vision, finesse, and intelligence. Football players just require more of each than soccer players.

I watched the clip a couple of days ago..and being an NFL fan i've watched barry sanders since i was a kid. I also had a season ticket to my club in london for a few years. I was a rugby player, and though ive never played american football, the differences between footbll and rugby are vast. Yes you have to be fast, have good acceleration, be agile, and all the rest of it...I was a shit footie player and a good rugby player. Some of my friends could make the transition, but they tended to be smaller and learn to control their aggression in football...every time i played football I got yellow carded or cautioned. The type of fitness was also very different, I was strugling after 45mins of football but could play 80mins of rugby being smashed left right and center and feel fine. An NFL player would be blowing hard after twenty mins on a football pitch...garunteed.
To put it bluntly players of different sports are tuned to the requirements of that sport. So its not the same skill set, I say this as well to people like Sev who try to compare Rugby and NFL players...different sports, the athletes train for specific requirements. Again with intelligence, the intelligence is completely different, quickness of mind cannot be compared...facing a rush defence in rugby, or a blitz in NFL or a proper zonal system in football are require you to react within a split second if you dont have the intelligent understanding of the game you end up looking like a fool. You cant say an NFL player requires more, no they dont, its just different.
-
To clarify my post, I refuse to call football 'soccer'...so translate all references to football as soccer

Rugby and football are not in the same universe.
After reading your post, I would agree that a small portion of the skill set for soccer and football is different. The endurance for each sport is a bit different. Football players do get a brief "rest" between each play, while soccer players run a bit more without breaks, although not every player has to constantly sprint. But the running football players do is much more difficult, because they are wearing a lot of gear, trying to execute plays, and trying to avoid getting whacked (or trying to deliver a blow).
I do think that because the speed of the game is so much faster in football, the athletes are so much bigger, stronger, and faster, and there is the equivalent of a car crash on every play, the mental aspect (in addition to the physical aspect) is a bigger component in football. I'm not saying you don't need all of those things in soccer. Just that there is so much more involved.
Take the smartest, toughest, biggest studs on the field (fullbacks :D). When they huddle before a play, they have about 5 seconds to listen to the play being called. That is was 1 of over 100 plays. He then has several seconds to get in the proper formation. Eyeball the defense. Recognize the defense. Know what all other 10 players are going to do on the play. Listen for an audible, which can change the play in a few seconds. Keep still (unless he's put in motion) and wait for the right snap count. Then run block, pass block (including picking up a blitz, if any), carry the ball, or catch the ball.
QBs have an even greater responsibility, except they don't get hit nearly as often.
I don't think you could take an existing NFL player and put him on soccer field and expect him to thrive, and vise versa. But I do believe that if players like Barry, Vick, Vernon Davis, LeBron, Rice, Moss, etc., who are just freaks, played soccer from a young age they would dominate the sport.

I think there are players in any sport who you know are just naturally gifted and would succeed in any sport they turned their mind to. I agree someone like Michael Vick or Thomlinson would be brilliant at anything they had decided to take up. The same goes for some other sports. I know in england there's a bunch of kids who show promise in a number of sports but by 18 have to make a choice. Some go to cricket, some rugby, some football, some tiddlywinks...its a shame because in sports amateur days you did used to have folks who would play cricket in the summer and then play football in the winter. But its ofcourse impossible to do that now.
I think the last great sportsman i know of was a guy called jeff wilson who played on the wing for the NZ All Blacks (amazing feat in its own) then in summer used to play international cricket...he retired in 2001. I guess Michael Jordan had a try at baseball right? but from what i remember it didnt really work out

Yeah. I agree with this. The best athletes in this country typically play football or basketball. I wish more would play tennis, etc., but I doubt that happens anytime soon.
Jordan sucked at baseball. Deion Sanders and Bo Jackson did pretty good in baseball, but that's a rarity. Another DB from Atlanta did it too. Forget his name.

i disagree...cricket is a unique game in so far such that no matter how great the atheletic ability there are some in cricket that'd bring ANYONE to their knees...ANYONE
the likes of Brett Lee, Big Freedie flintoff, sharne warne, Rickey Ponting, Shoaib Akthar, Shahid Afridi, Shachin tendulkar...you just CANT match that stuff
i dont care if u are Michael vic or Michael jordan playing cricket...some people were BORN to play the game and cannot be touched...for example!
sharne warne ball of the century
orr fastest 100..a 17 yr old shahid afridi
-
oh i forgot...Wassim Akram..with 2 UNPLAYABLE balls ...even if u r jesus during the 1992 worldcup...rightfully monikered "the left arm of god"

you might be right...I played rugby in Fiji, and recently played a knock around cricket match with a bunch of indian kids, the natural flair both sets of kids had for those given sports leads me to believe that sometimes it takes a unique talent, honestly they made everything look so effortless is was amazing...Shane Warne only comes along once in a generation, if anybody can wrist spin the way he did, as well as mask the subtle changes in delivery it will be a sight to behold...I remember the ashes in 2005 every ball he bowled i was on the edge of my seat.

growing up in paki..summers we'd wake up and start playing at 8 am and go till 12 or 1 am the next day...hardly even eating...cause that took up time...
then when we grew up we'd play on grounds(20 over games) where the winning team stayed(ie..got to play again...looser had to vacate)...soo we HAD to win if we wanted the grounds to ourselves..
now i live in America and i had forgotton how good kids in those countries...i returned back in 1999 and i remember bowling as fast as i could to a 10 yr old (tape tennis)....i got him in the stomach a few times and pissed him off...i wasn't holding back on account he ws 10...i ws banging em in
after that...he hit me out of the ground quite a few times..and he couldn't have been that strong and ws only 5ish feet...but anything short of perfect length and i'd pull me away on leg

I think many of you are missing the point of this thread. the point is that we have become so over run with dirty little mexican/latin american gremlins and other low IQ foreigners/minorities that ESPN and other TV networks have decided that airing more soccer is a wise business deal. 10 years ago, soccer on tv meant ratings suicide. now, it is seen as a wise move. you following me?

You cant keep the world shut out forever. I've always thought it bizarre that the US had its own sports that no one else in the world played and yet called the MLB championship the 'World' Series. Football (or soccer as you americans insist on calling it) IS the world sport. What did you guys think was gonna happen? That you could let people in and they were suddenly going to like Baseball or Hockey or American Football? ofcourse not, almost every country in the world's favourite sport is football, so theyre going to come in and want to watch that. America has spent so long exporting its culture to the rest of the world without getting anything back, well football is one of the things you have to deal with in return. To some extent the fact that rugby is also growing fairly fast is a testament to that as well (though i think that might be more to do with failed American Football players wanting something to do) I dont think theres any doubt that in 100 years the main sport in the USA will be 'soccer', once the standard of the league improves (which it already is doing) its only a matter of time, the money will come flooding in and with that the major sports channels.
-
I agree with Toxic's opinion.
Another example is tennis. I'm sorry, but no matter how arrogant you are in regards to American sporting superiority, none would be capable to compete against Federer or Nadal from NFL or NBA or NHL.
As good as Kobe might be suited to basketball, and how impressive his stature you might assume - if he was born again and taught by the best trainers I honestly don't believe he could compete with someone as naturally suited at tennis as Federer.
Beach Bum is entitled to believe a Honda Civic can be directly compared to a Tank but I don't.
