Isn't this very old news? Sony does this as well, only Nintendo seems to make a few quid off their consoles.

Yup, the PlayStation 3 initially cost around $805.85 to $840.35 to produce, but sold for only $499 to $599. So Sony was losing about $250 per unit sold.
