SAO PAULO–Officials say former world boxing champion Arturo Gatti has been found dead in a hotel room in northeastern Brazil.
A spokeswoman for the public safety department of Pernambuco state says the body of the former junior welterweight champ from Montreal was discovered on Saturday morning in the posh seaside resort of Porto de Galinhas, where he arrived on Friday with his wife and one-year-old son.
She said it was unclear how the 37-year-old Canadian died.
"There were no bullet or stab wounds on his body, but police did find blood stains on the floor," she said, adding that his wife and son were unhurt.
The spokeswoman, who did not provide further details, declined to be identified because she was not authorized to comment on the case.
Gatti who had a career record of 40-9, is a former IBF super-featherweight champion and WBC light welterweight champion.
The boxer known as "Thunder" was born in Italy but raised in Montreal. He turned pro in the U.S. in 1991 but moved back to Montreal after retiring in 2007.

gatti was a great guy and tough boxer, im wondering if there was any cocaine usage involved. the only reason i say this is cause i know people in jersey city where gatti lives who told me of the insane amounts of cocaine gatti would do, he was famous for being a party animal. rip arturo

Police detain wife of former boxing champion Gatti
By TALES AZZONI – 3 hours ago
SAO PAULO (AP) — Brazilian authorities say they have detained the wife of former boxing champion Arturo Gatti as a suspect following his death at a posh seaside resort in Brazil.
Police say 23-year-old Amanda Rodrigues was taken into custody Sunday because of contradictions when she was interrogated. Gatti's body was found early Saturday in a hotel room at the Porto de Galinhas resort in northeastern Brazil.
A spokeswoman for the Pernambuco state civil police says Gatti was apparently strangled with the strap of a purse, which was found with blood stains at the scene. Milena Saraiva told The Associated Press that the Canadian also had a head injury.
Saraiva said authorities were preparing to present a formal accusation against Rodrigues.
