get a belt sander.  DO NOT GET A CIRCULAR SANDER.  they make them so you can push/ pull them along like a lawn mower.  if you get a circular sander (which is more often used as a buffer), return it and get a belt sander.  pick a straight line in your hardwood and follow it, pull slowly.  i'd start on a part you can fuck up (somewhere not in public or in a closet) just to get a feel for the speed of sanding.  follow the grain, don't go accross the grain for obvious reasons.

home depot or a local tool rental place should have them.

oh...arnold's calves were real.

Thank you!

also, do you know if your flooring's stained?  is it brown or some other color that's not the color of...oak?  if so, make sure you restain it before putting the lacquer on top.  also, get wood filler if you have cracks.

so the process is:
1. sand
2. fill in cracks with wood filler (wood filler color to match final color of floor)
3. let filler dry
4. re-sand
5. stain (if necessary)
6. apply lacquer

so yes, you'll have to sand twice.  the filler dries in a couple hours, so a one day rental should be enough, depending on the size of your room(s).

i had Romanians.  How much did you pay? I paid 2.50 a square ft plus 1.75 for hardwood flooring (3/4" red oak).  They paid for the paint and had their own tools and labor obviously.  This was new installation, not refinishing.  They charge a dollar a ft for refinishing.

Cool thank you, yes it is stained now.  I've read a couple articles and watched some youtube videos.  I think I can handle it.  I'm a decent carpenter, and am good with my hands.  I'll tell you how it goes, thanks again!

why? all the "pros" use filler.  what's your suggestion?  all natural?  please.  unless his cracks are 1/4" or bigger, no way in hell will anyone ever know he used filler.

Is using "filler" akin to bondo-ing up a classic car, thus ruining its value?

well, that all depends.  you can't really argue for the "value" of a shitty cracked floor.  plus he's refinishing it anyways, not like he's preserving the old shittiness.  hardwood flooring is relatively cheap and plentiful, whereas classic cars are limited in quanitity.

What if the pine floor is from the early 1800s?  What do you do then?

this is what you use to fill in cracks works everytime (http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/21U7xjEEF4L._SL500_AA193_.jpg)

this is actually wood water putty, not drywall putty/spakle.

sand the floor lightly by hand if you are not a pussy

sweep up all the dust

or rent one and finish a room in an hour for a 1-2 hour rent = only about 40 bucks

then put a 20% stain 80% polyeurathane mixture on the floor for a glossy finish

pine floors are super shitty.  i'd imagine back then, it was the "pergo" equivalent.  do they even make pine flooring?  oak lasts for a thousand years if taken care of.  pine i'm not so sure of.  next time you're at a hardware store, look up the price of pine doors vs. solid oak.

if pine was any good, wouldn't arnold call himself the "Austrian Pine"?

tips for dudes selling their house:

if you have hardwood flooring underneath your shitty carpeting, spend a couple hundred and expose them.  chicks love hardwood floors even though i think they're a bitch to walk on, but look nice with a nice rug on them.

Depending on location used to determine the value of flooring.  In a place with few pines, pine would be the most expensive.  In a place with few oaks, oak would be the most expensive and desirable.

Modern trade has made location scarcity less of a factor in determining value.

don't you think oak's a lot better?

true.  today's mostly a factor of choice and price, where before availability was a huge issue.

Also, colonial houses used slow-growth Pine because they were meant to just age by the walking of the feet.  They were never sanded nor finished, instead polished by the boots and shoes of many a well met traveler.  In time they acquired a wonderful patina.

that's the same reason the guy told me he used pine flooring at one of those steakhouses where you throw peanuts on the floor, the "Lone Star Steakhouse" type.  He just put bare pine down, and said the scuffing and shoes would polish it eventually and age it.

gentlemen, please, let's not argue the cheapness of our south american brethren.  they are very cutthroat when it comes to pricing.

for example: i needed a tree cut down in my back yard cuz we had to put a new garage in, and there wasn't enough room for a 2 car.  anyways, here's the prices i got:

1. white guy - 2500, plus 400 for stump removal
2. mexican 1 - 2000, plus stump removal for free
3. mexican 2 - 1800 plus stump removal for free
4. mexican 3 - 1400, stump removal for free
