A guy that I work with is a classic pre-diabetic imo. Every time he eats a carb he's ready to fall over. Always thirsty, always pissing. Hispanic. Sedentary. Badly dyslipidemic with no improvement despite a year of watching his fats. Psoriasis. Family history of similar symptoms, with his mother being diagnosed as diabetic by one doctor only to be told that she's not diabetic by another.
After 9 months of letting him do his thing with his docs (who stung him with a bill that he thought the government was picking up), I have to either sack him or cure him. He's fucking up my business and that is fucking up my life. I took him to a new doc on my dime in a last ditch effort to get to the bottom of this shit. He's a good guy and I would like to see him get well, and I want his stupid 'I don't know what a carb is' ass back at work.
Just like his past docs, the new one ordered a fasting glucose test for IFG, but didn't order an oral glucose tolerance test. She claims he isn't diabetic or pre-diabetic because his fasting glucose is normal (I haven't seen the #), and also says if fasting glucose is ok then there's no need for an OGTT for impaired glucose tolerance. Everything I have read says otherwise, and I have printed out a number of studies with which to convince her to order an OGTT. Ffs, it's no more invasive than the fasting test. I'm pretty pissed she didn't order it at the same time.
All advice from those with experience appreciated. Normal fasting glucose with seriously impaired glucose tolerance or insulin insensitivity, fucked up lipids and cardiovascular disease.
Mods, if you move this could you please put it on the Nutrition Board? I have posted it here by way of casting a wider net. Apologies but this is pretty important.
