Spot on 100%

With his work ethic, demeanor, personality and attitude he was able to pave the way for athletes like Tiger Woods and David Beckham etc.  There will never be another who will have the impact that MJ did.

LOL. Wow. That made no sense whatsoever.

David Beckham. I will assume you are joking. You will though, need to look to another sport to choose the best athlete.

the only reason he was "good" was because he could jump high, had an unstoppable jumpshot, could score a lot, and didn't buckle under pressure.

other than that, he's no better than your typical high school player.

in other news, jordan 7's re-released next month.  never had those, will buy when they're out.

At their own sport, hockey, we have Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux, who statistically were much more superior than Jordan. Even Wilt Chamberlain has records that nobody will touch.

MJ is a close second thoough.

A definition of "The Greatest Athlete" needs to be defined. In terms of numbers (Stats.) no one has dominated their sport like Wayne Gretzky has, or ever will. Even Wilt Chamberlain holds as many records as Jordan does and he retired in the 70's!!!!!!!!!

My opinion, Ali.

Best boxer and stood for what he believed in. He didn't care what people thought and it worked out good for him, even when going against the government. Truly a man against all odds.
Title: Re: The Greatest Athlete Ever
Post by: pumpster on July 20, 2009, 01:52:32 PM
He didn't pave the way for anyone, Magic and Bird did it. Magic and Chamberlain were just as good within basketball, in fact anyone watching the '92 olympic team saw that Magic had the bigger influence on the team, as i expected. Magic also won more times against quality competition that Jordan was lucky enough to avoid. Chamerlain has at least the number of records that Jordan did.

That's only within basketball, there are many others.

Those who fawn over Jordan have no depth of perspective. Trend followers.

Fuck Ali, why didn't he stand up for Cossell when Howard was railroaded for being a "racist" when Howard was one of the few broadcasters who stood up for Ali not going to Vietnam?  He's a sham.

Not the best boxer. That's fine that he stood by what he believed in but it hurt his boxing career in terms of skills and "ring rust". Joe Louis was a better heavyweight and Sugar Ray Robinson has a great case for greatest boxer ever.

Cossell made a comment on monday night football, something along the lines of look at that little monkey run in describing a kick return where the player was darting and cutting.  Totally innocent, but the guy was black and Howard was trashed for it.  And Ali had major cred at the time and could have stepped up for his "friend" like Howard did (and received death threats) but didn't.  Great boxer though.

Jordan and Woods never step up for the black man or for sharpton or J Jackson, either

About Brown?  He was dominant in he era (very short period of time) because he ran over 215lb, slow, white linebackers.  He would get destroyed in a game today.  I thought we were saying the best athlete of all-time, not of their era.

You can't compare Jordan to Gretzky is more like it. 60 NHL records and he's been retired for 10 years!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Canada invented both Basketball and Hockey. Hockey is more of an International sport than it used to be.... The hand to eye coordination to do what a hockey player does is probably more complex than any other sport.

I bet you Gretzky could play basketball better than Jordan could play hockey. I bet you 10% of people on Getbig could even skate well let alone do what he or Lemieux could do.

Again, define athlete..... Jim Thorpe, Bo Jackson, Lionel Conacher (you may need to look it up) great athletes since they could do so many thing so well.

Jim Brown! One of the best footballers ever. He retired in his prime. He would have held so many more records has he not retired to pursue a movie career. The only running back to ever average over 5 yards a carry. He retired because "He was only competing against himself" !!

Like I said, he was playing against LB's who were 20lbs lighter than he was, and we aren't even talking about the DB's....the caliber of competition he faced wasn't anywhere near what it is today. The athletes have evolved way too much.  Just like in every sport.  He has avg speed for a RB today, at best.  Not the most elusive guy either as he just bulled over smaller, slower players.  You honestly think he could do that today?  Bob, nostalgia is a powerful thing and I'm sure you loved him growing up, but he would get pummeled if he played in todays NFL.  Fact.

I guess we disagree on the criteria of the argument.  Greatest athlete of all time, IMO, is different than the greatest player which they largely based on pure stats.  Brown was incredible for his day, but I think he would be a 1,200 yd rusher with 10-12 TD's in todays game.  Nothing to laugh at, but certainly not greatest.  I didn't know he played lacrosse.
And none of us have mentioned Wilt Chamberlin who was a dominant basketball, track and volleyball player in college and one of the greatest NBA players of all time.  It's fun to argue, but there is no "cut n dry"

He retired undefeated as the World Heavy Weight

Mr. Dux still holds four world records:

Fastest Knockout - 3.2 seconds
Fastest Punch with a Knockout - .12 seconds
Fastest Kick with a Knockout - 72 mph
Most Consecutive Knockouts in a Single Tournament - 56

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the great Mickey Mantle.  He was a star basketball and football player who got a full scholarship to Univ of OK for football.  He was a superb natural athlete and could have been a pro footballer, no doubt.  Hell, he was one of the greatest baseball players in history, and the sad thing is, he drank himself silly and tore his body to shit.  If it wasn't for the injuries and early retirement, who knows what he could have accomplished. 8)

P.I.P. to the Mick

Jeez most of you guys are posting athletes that are great in their sport.  But most of them outside their sport are barely average.  Jim Thorpe was about as good as anyone in any sport he played in.  Babe Didrickson was unreal too.  Rafer Johnson was great.  Bo Jackson was great in two sports.  Deion Sanders was awesome too.  I would choose someone who was exceptional in team sports like baseball, football, basketball but also excelled in individual sports like golf, tennis, bowling, sprinting, long distance running, swimming.  Nothing like watching a great athlete in baseball look like a dork swinging a golf club or tennis racquet.  Some people are ust more adapt to certain sports.

about a billion people play basketball and probably only 50,000 people whove ever skated on ice in there lives=alot less competition to be the master

jordan was ripped and master of leans and 6feet6 just like johnny

It was all relative...the caliber was what it was, and he played then. Fact.

I dont know what he could do today...thats not the point

He was voted the best player in HISTORY...that should tell you something. He was also supposed to be a even better Lacrosse player...

Personally, I think im Thorpe was the best athlete (all around) without question...but to dismiss Jim Brown as if he was just another average player shows you're narrow

Have to agree with Chick here. The same argument come up all the time on the MMA boards. " Royce, Severn ect would be destroyed by todays competition". Its not fair to compare athletes from different eras.

Thats like saying Alexander the great and Erwin Rommel were not good generals because they would get crushed by modern armies.

Let's go with Jim Thorpe and Lionel Conacher:

Lionel  Conacher:
It would be hard to find a sport that Conacher didn't excel at, if he tried. He could run the 100-yard dash in 10.0 seconds when the world record was 9.8. He was the Canadian heavyweight boxing champion and the wrestling champion of Ontario. He played professional baseball in the International League, one step below the majors. He scored 15 points in the 1921 Grey Cup championship, when his Toronto Argonauts beat the Edmonton Eskimos 23-0 for the Canadian football championship.

But his greatest fame was as a hockey player. He may not have been as skilled as his brother Charlie, but he was certainly rougher and tougher. In 1936, he and Charlie had a fight that started on the ice and moved up a ramp into the lobby of the rink, when Charlie finally gave up.

Lionel, known as "Big Train," a kind of reverse pun on his name, entered the NHL with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1925. He was traded to the New York Americans during the 1926/27 season, then went to the Montreal Maroons. After three seasons with them, he played for the Chicago Black Hawks for one season and returned to the Maroons for three more, retiring in 1937.

He scored 80 goals and had 105 assists, with 882 penalty minutes in 500 regular season games, and he added 2 goals, 2 assists and 34 penalty minutes in 35 playoff games.

[edit] Baseball
In 1920, Lionel hit the game-winning home run to give his team the Toronto semipro baseball crown, then promptly took a taxi across the city and scored four goals for his lacrosse team, which was losing 3-0 when he arrived. In 1926, he played professional baseball as an outfielder for the Toronto Maple Leafs of the International League. His team won the pennant and the Triple A championship.[21]

[edit] Boxing
In 1920 Lionel won the Canadian amateur light heavyweight boxing title. In 1921 Lionel boxed a four-round exhibition with Jack Dempsey. [22]

[edit] Lacrosse
Lionel also played lacrosse for the Toronto Maitlands, and helped guide that team to the Ontario Senior Lacrosse championship in 1922.[23] In 1931, Conacher became professional in a third sport when he played for the Montreal Maroons in the International Indoor Professional Lacrosse League. [24] In 1965, he was inducted into the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame.

[edit] Wrestling
In 1916 Conacher won the amateur lightweight wrestling championship of Ontario in the 125 pound weight class at age 16 year old. After training with Ali Hassan, he made his pro debut in May 1932 for Toronto promoter Ivan Mickailoff. Conacher went 27-0 as a pro wrestler in Canada and the United States in 1933 and never lost a match in his career. [25]

Kareem Abdul Jabbar was once asked who was the best player he ever seen...After a long pause, he state that EARL "THE GOAT" MANIGAULT was the best player to ever play the game...The was barely over 6 feet tall but could jump up and grab quarters off the top of backboards...He schooled any pro that ever dared play around with him...Yet he never left the playground...

Earl "The Goat(greatest of all time)" Manigault...

Now that you mention it, I think Foxx did have some alkie problems.  Have you ever seen the movie "61*" about the chase in '61 for Ruth's single season HR record?  From what I've read about the "backstage" antics with Mickey's and Whitey Ford's drinking-stripper binges, that movie was pretty accurate. ;D

Yeah -- seen the flick a few times. I heard it was pretty accurate too. There weren't any bigger stars than Mantle in those days.

If you can remember watching "A League of their own", with Tom Hanks, you should know that Tom's character is based on Jimmie Foxx.

What a time that would have been to be a ball player. You were pretty much god on earth in those days if you were Mantle or Dimaggio.

Ya know, I never saw the hype behind Dimaggio.  Definitely a first-class ballplayer, and kind of a baseball senior statesman in his day, even though he was a recluse, BUT why all the hype about his 56-game hitting streak as being one of the greatest feats in baseball history?  Sure, it takes consistency to do that, but it takes even more consistency to bat .406 over the course of a whole season.  Thoughts?

Title: Re: The Greatest Athlete Ever

But no, hitting .406 is way harder than 56 straight games. Someone today will come along and break 56 games. No one today will ever hit .400 again. And to be one of the most formidable power hitters of all time, and hit .400 -- that make Teddy Ballgame the best hitter ever in my book. Maybe not my favorite, but if I had to pick only one hitter to play on my team, it'd Ted Williams every single time.

Breaking .400 -- It's as untouchable as Hack Wilson's 190+ RBI season.

Totally agreed.  I'm glad there's a fellow baseball buff here.  What impresses me the most about Williams is that he hit that .406 in, what, his third season as a major leaguer, and I believe at the age of 23?  Unreal.  You're right, no one will ever touch that.  Tony Gwynn got near it back in the 80s, and Brett did, too.  But with pitching becoming more and more scientific nowadays, with these guys studying tapes of hitters at the plate, and lots of other factors...if anyone can break .400 again, he will be a god among men, more so than Williams was.
Title: Re: The Greatest Athlete Ever
Post by: PANDAEMONIUM on July 20, 2009, 09:06:58 PM
Gwynn and Brett were close, but could either of them put up the power numbers Williams did? Nope.

But I agree -- if you hit .400 today, that's something compared to .400 in the 40's. Three pitchers per game. All your weaknesses as a hitter on video and studied by every pitcher in the opposing pen.

But still, the only man playing today who I would have hit .400 and (if he stayed consistent) mention in the same breath as Williams would have to be Pujols. And I'm stretching. He's the closest thing to Teddy Ballgame as we'll get today. This year, he might very well hit more homeruns than strikeout. That hasn't been done in a long, long time. But even still, I don't think Pujols has a .400 season in him. No one in today's current crop does.

Even if a guy like Ichiro did it, it would still be by a guy who more closely resembles the slap hitting style of Cobb, and not the hammering style of Williams. Although Ichiro couldn't lace up Cobb's cleats on his best day.

I tell ya, Pujols is the most underrated player today, probably because he's not playing for a big market team, at least not big market like the Yankees.  A-Rod (oh brother) is a hack compared to Pujols.  An all around superb player, a great natural hitter for average, a power hitter, and unlike A-Rod, not a complete asshole.  I've bought triplicates of his rookie cards. :D

Let me know if you hear about future re-releases of the Jordan 4 - the best shoe ever made.   I bought 4 pairs when the re-released 'em the first time in 1999, but I'm down to one last boxed pair.  Need to restock.

this guy. Not the best basketball player, or hockey player, or football player, etc. The best athlete of all-time.

That was a great fuckin' vid.

Tough to name the greatest ever, but two other names that should be kicked around -- Lance Armstrong and Walter Payton.
Who is this dude?

On Jordan, I believe Jordan is probably the only individaul to totally dominate the team collective minds and the player he was against. He wanted to not just beat the team and the player, but he would not sacrifice beating the player and losing the game. In those terms he in fact owned the NBA collectively. If it were not for him and Nike's strategic packaging and marketing of him, the NBA would not be as popular as it is and Nike would not have the billions of dollars in revenue that it generates to day.

Nobody else comes close.

umm
youre right,, i was about to say there are 2 but youre right,, michael jordan was the best athlete the world has ever seen followed closely by diego armando maradona

both of them made you watch games only because trhey played and not for any other reason ,,meaning you would stop anything you do when they got on the field and do nothing but watch ,, they were the best ever

the reason i give it to michael jordan is simply because he was class act from beggining to end and simply put,, the nba became nothing since he left as of today there is still football more or less theree was vanbasten and zidan and there is messy and there is still some level of football ,,when it comes to baskerball ...the game died since michael jordan left ,,none of the player shakil kobe briant all those wanna bes cant play nothing they are all generation nothingness playing against other who belong in this generation

thats why michael jordan is the best athlete to ever born on planet earth

the only reason he was "good" was because he could jump high, had an unstoppable jumpshot, could score a lot, and didn't buckle under pressure.

other than that, he's no better than your typical high school player.

in other news, jordan 7's re-released next month.  never had those, will buy when they're out.

I always have liked the Jordan 5's, Jordan 6's, and Jordan 7's myself...Which are the best

carl lews was drafted by teh bulls in the same year as Jordan but did only a few trainings sessions because he was not good enough for the nba
at the same time jordan hat nearly the same vertical as lewis plus the little things you can t train as 10 inch hands

Jordan was the greatest especially on a commercial view

Jim Brown makes a better choice also

Jordan may have been th best BASKETBALL player
I agree Jordan may have been the best Ball player but as far as being the greatest athlete....
Everyone forgets about this guy..(http://www.nightsafari.com.sg/whatsnew/images/CarlLewis3.jpg) Carl Lewis = 9 Olympic Gold Medals.

To be honest its impossible to say who the greatest athlete ever was...certainly I'd say the best known was probably michael jordan, since countries that didn't even play Basketball all knew him. It's a bit of a silly question in all fairness...

In terms of the dude that most inspired me, its gotta be Michael Johnson...hell the guy coulda shot up an orphanage and I still would think he was god.

It was an 'honorary' draft based on his popularity and success at the time....it wasn't for real bro.

Wow. I guess everyone in the last 3 pages of this thread really got off topic. Baseball players don't count since Baseball is not even a sport. It's a pastime. lol. Most of them are fatasses anyways.

carl louis is third place behind maradona which is behind jordan  <---- Retarded post alert.

Spell the athlete's name correctly at least. lol
Maradonna is a fat drug addict, Lewis was the most successful Track and Field Athlete ever. Jordan was a great Basketball player. This doesn't make him the best Athlete ever.

Best all around athlete...anyone who win's the Olympic, World Games, NCCA, etc Decathlon event. Other than that, it's the best performer in a chosen sport or more than one sport. Which can lead to dozens of examples.Three sports.....Jim Brown or Bo Jackson as example. One sport, Dr J ahead of Jordon. Never be one answer as to who was/is the greatest athlete ever.

Jordan missed a few prime years to "live the dream" with the white sox as well.
that's my point jordan tried and failed to play his first love basrball. remember the hardest thing in sports to hit a round ball with a round bat squarely, esp when said ball is thrown 60 to 107 miles per hour from varying angles and speeds and different english on said ball. jim thorpe was a track athlete, played mlb baseball, also pro football he excelled at everything. ruth the fat bastard excelled at pitching and hitting all while under the influence of booze and hotdogs by the dozens. all ruth did was hit more homeruns in some years than the combined totals of whole teams, amazing isn't it.
