Title: Mike Mentzer's Heavy Duty
Post by: The RedMeatKid on July 27, 2009, 09:50:14 AM
Is Mike Mentzer's Heavy Duty System really that much more effective than volume training?

Does anyone ever like to be wrong?

I prefer to take it to maybe one rep before failure as I often train alone.

Just because Chick views a thread entitled "Pictures of my erect penis" does NOT make him gay.  I don't even know why you bring that up...

But isn't also true that a mature, evolved individual realizes the impossibility of being right at all times?
You couldn't be more wrong, bro.   ;D

Is Chick's constant need to be right about everything all the time undermining his credibility as Athlete's Rep?  Can such a childish approach to life be reconciled with the level of Maturity demanded by the Athlete's Rep position?  Is it time for a change?

I don't know many people who yearn to be wrong, do you? How is he different to anyone else? Do you think you're right?

Mentzer tried to educate the bodybuilders as to the least amount of excecise to build muscle not hanging out with the gym rats all day everday a great guy sorely missed.

I dont think that 95% of the people that train would benefit from heavy duty. I dont think most people could pour all the intensity that is need in one set. Those people would be better off training with medium to high volume.

Guys like Yates are rare. They had the focus to train to utter failure....and one set was sufficient. Lots of people think they are training to failure but they are decieved.

in a word......NO

i do believe that most bodybuilders over train

but no......mentzer's heavy duty was too extreme

you can perform 10-12 sets for big bodyparts and not over train

but mentzer would tell you that you only need to perform one set per exercise

just my .02

mentzer himself trained with closer to 10 sets per bodypart

a well known pro from the 70s and 80s told me that

mike would definitely not follow volume training but did not perform only 0ne set to failure........so there you have it.

Can't imagine Mentzer ever having very long training sessions with his clients-- or very often for that matter.

Charge by the minute, your only gonna be here for 5 minutes and I'll see you in 10 days when youv'e recovered.

Where did all those overtrained monsters go? What did they do in all of that "off-time"??

I follow it and I've had very good results with it. I've stuck at it for around about two years now, it fits my lifestyle as I really don't have time to be in the gym 4-6 times a week. Training once a week now and I'm still gaining and not feeling burnt-out.

Ha, I like Mentzer's analogy about how he'd do the last rep if there was a room full of hot girls in bikinis.

that clip reminds me of my football coach, who for some reason, always thought we had an extra 15 reps in us.

"but coach, i did 3 sets of 8"

"i want to see you get 20"

*blows shoulder out*

"now that's how you work it!"

I dont think that 95% of the people that train would benefit from heavy duty. I dont think most people could pour all the intensity that is need in one set.

all that is needed is whatever you put forth that day.
that's the same your muscle needs as well. your joints say thanks.

volume is a mind stroke for naturals.
