CNN) -- Jim Nicholson could've just handed over the cash. Instead, he gave the would-be robber a run for his money -- and paid for it.
The 30-year-old bank teller said the suspect, dressed in black and wearing sunglasses, walked up to his counter at the Key Bank branch in suburban Seattle, Washington, demanding he fill the man's bag with cash.
"So I grab the bag ... I threw it on the floor," Nicholson told CNN Radio. He said he demanded the robber show him a weapon. When he realized there was none, Nicholson said, he lunged at the robber, chased him down the street, pinned him down and waited for the police.
That was Tuesday of last week. He lost his job Thursday.
Why?
"Policy violation," Nicholson said. "Basically, we are supposed to comply with any robber that would come in. We're supposed to just give him the money and let him go -- and obviously I did not do that."
Key Bank spokeswoman Anne Foster declined to comment on the incident, saying it's under investigation, and Nicholson's termination, saying it's a personnel matter.
"What I can say is Key's highest priority is to protect the safety of our employees and our clients," she said. "Our policies and procedures are in the best interest of public safety and they're consistent with industry standards."
"Money, after all, is insurable and it's replaceable," she added. "Lives are not."
Nicholson said he knew about the company's robbery policy before the incident, but said he acted on instinct. He found his dismissal a bit harsh, but said he doesn't plan to challenge it.
"I think that they probably wanted to set an example," he said. "I don't think they want other tellers to do the same thing."

Absurd. So give the guy warning. ::) Or fire him and become a national story.

Sad, this guy deserves a promotion...

I understand where the bank is coming from with the policy , but reprimand him and move on.
-
if the dude had chased bad guy a block away and gotten killed, would the teller's family have sued the bank?
sadly, probably so.
-
And lost....what could they sue for. It was very clear he violated bank policy.

they would have sued anyway.
and you know there's a chance a sympathetic jury could have given them something.
And it woudl have cost the bank a ton of $ in bad PR and lawyers fees, even if the plantiffs never won a thing.

What about if the guy actually DID have a gun, and when the teller demanded to see it, he pulled it out,
...and shot a customer? That customer's family would have recourse to sue no? They could make that case.
-
the policy is there for a reason paay him and get him out of the bank that way nobody gets hurt

well, if the teller chased the guy down the block...
and bad guy fired wildly and killed somebody else...
you can bet the victim's family would be suing the bank, not the crackhead bank robber.

Yes, I'm following the thread. 240 gave a possible scenario, ...I gave another. You're sooo slow!
I take it you still haven't found a head yet huh? :-\ Well, ...keep hunting. You might find one, one of these days. :)

Says the lady who wouldn't entertain the idea of "What if an intruder was in Gates home and the officer had left without having Gates step outside....leaving Gates to die."

We're talking apples & oranges.
When Crowley made the arrest, he already knew Gates was the resident and was neither in, nor posing any danger.
When the teller chose to disregard bank policy and play the hero, ...he took unecessary risks, not only with his own life, but those of his colleagues, and innocent customers. It was stupid. Firing him was also stupid.
So what's with all the off topic posts as of late. Sheesh, you people need to get over yourselves.
You have "Gates' on the brain" The only one that needs to worry about Gates is Crowley. You aren't Crowley by chance?

There is no point in being the tough guy if you're a bank teller or a worker in any type of franchise or chain store. They have insurance for this sort of thing, give the dude the money and let him go, its not your money you're losing...or anybody else's for that matter, so what the fuck do you care apart from being loyal to your employer? I remember when I was manager of a liquor store, one of my staff tried acting tough and ended up getting his head smashed through a fridge...not worth it, just shut up and collect your pay cheque at the end of the month.
