Title: Muscle weighs more than fat; Myth or fact?
Post by: bodybuilder1234 on August 13, 2009, 06:25:27 PM
According to Dr. Nancy Snyderman the claim that 'muscle weighs more than fat' which seems to be general consensus among normal people is a complete myth.

She says muscle is denser and more efficient

Wat say you?

I once heard a woman say "I just went to the store and you know they don't put as many carrots in a pound as they used to."

To which I responded "... uhh, they put in a pound."

The same volume of muscle weighs more than fat, yes. So losing/gaining a pound of muscle vs a pound of fat will look a lot different on  your body.

Yes it does. But its very very small difference

They look close in solid state...

But when that fat heats up, it'll spread its nastiness all over the place

That silly bitch (Nancy Snyderman) is saying muscle weighs more than fat. It's a matter of volume.

the muscle needs fat to perform at its best, you take away fat in the diet, you look dryed out and become unathletic  and will not recover nearly as fast if you were to eat alot of decent fats and saturated fats

Completely irrelevant. We're not talking about dietary fat. A fat giggly gunt will not enhance athletic performance or offer any health benefit.

if you put a pound of fat and a pound of muscle on the table, the pound of fat would look bigger even though they weigh the same

something like that, i think :)

dietary fat goes to intramuscular fats(brown fat) then adipose tissue respectively(white fat)

i could be wrong on the intramuscular fats being the same as brown fat, both wich are good fats and highly beneficial

She says muscle is denser

but if it's denser, it weighs more.  it's contradictory

its not contradictory at all.

muscle is denser, thus for the same volume, muscle weighs more. density = weight/volume

muscle is "denser" is the more accurate word. Using the word "heavier" might be misleading to laymen..

Well, prior to ever working out I weighed 145 lbs and wore a size 9-10.   A week out from my first show I weighed the same (145 lbs) and wore a size 5.
