Some American called Darvis Patton. somebody's got to be last

But Ben Johnson needed steroids to hit 9.79 so if Bolt is running 9.58 and the other 2 are close behind.................. .. ;D

Yeah but it would suck to lose by that much.  The pack just ran off and left poor Darvis.  He's probably in crisis about his future right now.

LOL. He was slow as shit. Ran a 10.34, which means that guys from the 1960s would have been flying by him too

About the drugs.... he's got to be on GH.  Maybe some minimal test

Does he use performance enhancing drugs? I suspect yes, but I think its stupid to say "all drugs" about an amazing achievement like that.

If anything, in Bolt's case, it would make more sense to say "all genetics".

Followed by "all genetics and hard training".

Bolt could probably have achieved under 10 seconds naturally.

And I think he may well get under 9.5. Amazing!

He has been amazing people since he was a young teenager...contrary to popular belief, he didn't 'come from nowhere.'
I find it very sad that you can observe a feat so amazing and dismiss it, because of your preconceived ideas.  :(

he has jacked all the records in track.  time for him to move to the national felon league and run those 9.58 crossing routes.

2 points - first I did not say he took steroids. That is your preconceived idea about my statement. What I said was that I suspect he took performance enhancing drugs. He has never tested positive for a steroid (although having said that, there are periods of time when he trains pretty much in isolation in his home country, away from any testers, so in the past quite possibly may have been using a fast acting steroid with a short detection span).

But quite a part from steriods, there a range of other non-steroid performance enhancing substances he may have used (HGH being just one such example). Also possibly new forms of hard to detect EPO-like substances (which are usually used by middle to long distance runners, but which sprinters are now also using, especially in off-season training).

Secondly - I did not dismiss the feat. What he has done is amazing (whether with our without drugs makes no difference to me). I felt the same about Ben Johnson. So what if he tested positive. His run at the 1988 Olympics was incredible, and his positive test result does not make me "dismiss that feat" either.

They should allow any sort of drugs, or genetic engineering, or anything at all like that

If it means we can see someone run 100 meters in 5 seconds, i don't care if they are half cyborg

It was stated in a article by Carl Lewis' former coach, that if you could imagine our basketball players in track, it's just the fact they chose to make much more money in another sport, kinda like the NFL vs. bodybuilding.

He doesn't take steroids.

you don't know that he doesn't...I believe he trains in the US...but the US athletes have the stigma of cheaters in the US media, who are very ignorant of the drug game, so i believe the US athetes are now probably  either off the sauce or are taking lower doses...but even I don't know, that is pure speculation on my part.

You're living in a dream world my friend. Of course he does its not even a question that should be debated, the thing is that people think because someone uses roids it makes them less of an athlete, so they get all defensive when trying to defend his achievements. So let me be clear.

This guy is the greatest track and field athlete that has ever lived, he lives in his own stratosphere, we may never see another like him.

So what if he takes gear, everyone else in the race was on it too so not like he had an unfair advantage. My wish is that people would just be honest about it.

How fast is 9.58 in mph? And how fast was he going at certain parts, like up to 60 meters? I know that they have broken down some sprinters times and the like and some were going 27 mph, I think Bolt, might be up to 30-33 mph.

Sounds about right, at this rate I think in the next few yrs, sprinters may get up to 35 mph...

You know that they have been "speeding" up the tracks to try and erase Ben Johnson's time...Which of course has been broken a while ago...This action has hurt the enduro runners.

Yeah distance runners have always had the bad end of the stick. Remember in the late 70's early 80's all tracks were built at high altitude so people could break the sprint records, must have sucked to have been a long distance runner back then. I have no doubt these more bouncy tracks help the sprinters. The blue look for this track was pretty cool actually.

nice HD copy of the race.

Oh brother  ::)

Bolt hadn't even run a 100m race until 2 years ago. He was a 200 and 400m runner his whole career until his coach suggested he try the 100.

Actually this could be true because of all the shit that happened with Conte. However with the Americans losing to the Chinese at the last Oympics (home venue aside), i would think the Americans will lower the testing in order to win gold. The problem i think is everyone in America seems to want to know everyone else's business and they are the clean, great country (despite almost everyone being on some form of addiction whether it be painkillers, anti-dep, caffine etc. ;)) which hurts the true sportpeople.

As natural as Phil heath.  It's amazing how in the last few years this record has had the shit beaten out of it from Maurice Green, Asafa Powell, that other american dude and now bolt.  How the fuck can bolt be all natural and best American athletes with the best training facilities and coaches + all of the drugs they got caught taking by at least 2/5 of a second?  Unreal.

you got it bang on.

humans need several things in order to commit the act of cheating...

1. motive,
2. opportunity,
3. benefit.

Usain doesnt have 1 or 3, as he already was kicking ass for years prior..unless i guess he has been using since he was 13.

he's probably had opportunity.

he's got more to lose than gain.

besides, we've got retrospective testing where they store your bloods for decades on ice, he gets tested 100 times per year, and - if he was using, wouldnt he do it more subtley?

finally, he exhibits no physical indications of drug use...and none of the traits those busted before him who were so so runners who suddenly improved to world beaters, or amazingly improved in their mid twenties..

usain isnt 23 yet, ran his first 100m only 16 months ago- which was 10.03, and didnt even train seriously until 3 years ago...

the guy's a freak..

he is built for the 100m. when he first broke the 100m record he did it with such ease.

when he broke the 200m he ran for his life and tried his very best in that race. but he broke it by 0.2 seconds or less.

now the million dollar question is who would win in 200m michael johnson vs usain bolt keeping in mind they both use same drugs and equipment.

What an idiotic statement.  Bolt is a short distance runner with probably no endurance.  His legs would be on fire trying to run a mile.  Tyson is an endurance athlete.  Boxers have to have long term stamina and be light on their feet.  Bolt may get a huge lead but eventually tyson would catch up when bolts legs seize on him.

This guy is the greatest track and field athlete that has ever lived, he lives in his own stratosphere, we may never see another like him.

Not necessarily, he's just the fastest guy of this era, and doesn't do other events like Owens and Lewis did, only sprints. Other guys have been great in longer races like the 200-800. And the best decathaletes have been arguably just as good over a wider assortment of events.

The time is unbelievable BUT factor in the new tracks, spikes and wind and there might not be much differerence between him and Ben Johnson.

The tall sprinter will obviously now come more in to vogue, should've been done decades ago. Not sure that someone taller with bigger strides is necessarily the greatest athlete though, they don't have much mobility and are best in straight lines not other events.

Makes sense to me.

Pat

Incorrect.  Wind is actually a factor in races and if the wind is strong they will adjust the time.  Many times a record was broken but nullified because it was wind aided.

What's interesting is the length of this guys stride.  Ben Johnson had short steps so it looked like he was running faster but Bolt just glides with those long strides.  probably covers the same distance in half of the steps than Ben did.

nah, he beat Gay by about 2 meters....
