Title: Does this sound unreasonable?
Post by: Hustle Man on August 17, 2009, 11:37:55 AM
An Afghan bill allowing a husband to starve his wife if she refuses to have sex has been published in the official gazette and become law.

The original bill caused outrage earlier this year, forcing Afghan President Hamid Karzai to withdraw it. But critics say the amended version of the law remains highly repressive. They accuse Mr. Karzai of selling out Afghan women for the sake of conservative Shia support at next week’s presidential election. The law governs family life for Afghanistan’s Shia minority.

Sexual Demands
The original version obliged Shia women to have sex with their husbands every four days at a minimum, and it effectively condoned rape by removing the need for consent to sex within marriage.
Western leaders and Afghan women’s groups were united in condemning an apparent reversal of key freedoms won by women after the fall of the Taliban.

Now, an amended version of the same bill has passed quietly into law with the apparent approval of President Karzai. Just ahead of this Thursday’s Afghan presidential election, human rights groups suggest the timing is no accident. “There was a review process – Karzai came under huge pressure from all over the world to amend this law, but many of the most oppressive laws remain,” Rachel Reid, the Human Rights Watch representative in Kabul, told the BBC.

“What matters more to Karzai is the support of fundamentalists and hardliners here in Afghanistan whose support he thinks he needs in the elections.” Women’s groups say its new wording still violates the principle of equality that is enshrined in their constitution. It allows a man to withhold food from his wife if she refuses his sexual demands; a woman must get her husband’s permission to work; and fathers and grandfathers are given exclusive custody of children.

What makes them treat their women this way?

I'd enjoy it if we perhaps did a poll of what you lot (of Americans) think sounds reasonable?

1) have you a passport and have you ever been anyplace else to see and/or experience how others live?

2) do you really think that the way in which news is reported in your country has any bearing on or resemblance to the reality of what is actually happening in the country you are villifying?

3) do you consider the ongoing loss of life in Afghanistan and previously in Iraq to be worthwhile or reasonable?

4) do you know where Iraq is?  Do you know where Iran is?  Can you tell the diff?

5) (joke here btw) do you get married in order to have legal sex whenever or what?

6) do you adhere to a chosen religion?  and do you object to others having another, one of their own?

There is something to be said about this.  Are they so repulsive/lame/incompetent that they have to make a law to force their wives to have intercourse?

solid questions..u wont get an answer here Linda...the average 12 grade American student = a 7 grade O-levels student...and its done by design

Similar stories are made up by the taliban to recruit soldiers....although you'd expect more intelligence here in the first world but i guess the " us against them instinct is the same everywhere"

By the way...sorry about the ashes

Stella, I think it's not only the christian Bible but the Koran and every and all scriptures.  The Hindus drew lewd pictures, no?

tis, once a woman takes those vows and marries, her duty to do as bid.

The Christian bible doesn't say to starve your wife if she won't have sex w/you.  I'm not sure what you're talking about w/Hindus drawing lewd pictures....are you saying Hinduism advocates forced sex through starvation too?

Does the Koran actually say to starve your wife if she refuses you?  Or is that just a man-made law?

I have lost the ability to frame a quote and reply to it.  Shit.  So I'm all over the place.  But Mr Toxic, sadly I'm not into Cricket.  It's the only and only sports game I simply don't comprehend.  Why does it take two blokes to run up and down and what is it with those rude Australians and their ugly white paint when it's never sunny here?

Last I heard England were winning.  Ought I put the telly on?

Stella, I wasn't talking about food, I thought the women cooked the food, what do I know?

I was talking about not desiring sex.  Maybe she'd not had a decent meal for a few days.  I haven't a clue.

Please don't tell me Australia have trashed us.  We were all geared up for a celebration.

Can't find it what channel is it on.

For some mad reason I dislike cricket.  I used to think it was boring.

Does the Koran actually say to starve your wife if she refuses you?  Or is that just a man-made law?

yes the Koran explicitly said that BOTH husband and wife are bound to fulfill eachothers sexual needs...

however no where it says that there needs to be any punishment involved if a husband or wife does not...

it simply says that not to do so is a sin....and god will deal with ya after ya die..

the end

Thanks Toxy.  So it's a man made law to starve them.   It just makes them seem inept in their skills or something.  Maybe they could go to a class or something and they wouldn't have to make the law.

I'm not surprised, no chance we'd win...

I'm thinking of leaving London and moving up north to the country.  I too have started making lists of things to do in London before I leave:

I want to see the Elgin Marbles at the British Museum before they are sent back to Athens.
I want to go to Marine Ices at Chalk Farm Road to have a proper Italian Cone.
I want to re-visit a few old haunts.

Tox?  Stonehenge is 6-8 or 10 hours from London?  very very South West?  And LochNess is like 10-12 hours overnight North?  How long were you planning to visit this gorgeous country?

Thankfully I've seen both.  Stonehenge you must do on summer solstice, June 21.

Only kidding, you just drive by it, it's all completely cordonned off nowadays, it's on the way to Devon and Cornwall on the motorway.

I must recommend that Canada is good in September and October....  Awesome as they say

you were chatting about visiting Britain last year and the year before (well you guys call it "Europe" and go see Paris, Madrid and Berlin while you're at it don't you?).

did you make it last year?  Have you actually ever made it across the Atlantic yet?

Maybe you ought fly west instead?  I understand that Australia is another big country somewhat similar to America in its attitudes and politics.  Perhaps you ought fly that way and see what you come across.

Europe and the UK will always be here, please just leave them till you're ready (or have sufficient dosh?

You can drive past Stonehenge on the motorway on the way to Devon or Cornwall.  It's an incredibly long way.  Hopefully there is perhaps a lay-by you could pull into and have a look from afar but you can't get anywhere near it anymore, you can just look and drool or whatever.

& still they don't know how those massive stones were moved there...

The only time they take down the new big wire fence is on summer solstice approx June 21 to allow stoners to pray.

Course not.  Instead you frequent the drinking establishments of Soho, politely admire the Cafe de Paris (which they just recently sold off and auctioned every last light fitting and chair in order to build a big new something or other).

So you walk down the streets he walked.

As for that graveyard in gay Paris, I'll give it a miss.  I've never seen the Arc de Triomphe.
