Post by: Butterbean on August 21, 2009, 03:13:34 PM
What is the deal w/the thin piece of wood (cedar?) that is wrapped around some cigars?

Thanks!

wood wrapper

" From what I understand, that wood “sleeve” serves a two-fold purpose. One is to protect the delicate leaf that wraps the cigar. The second reason is to provide a small bit of humidity to the cigar. I’m sure it may insulate the cigar a little to help hold the humidity that is already present within the cigar as well."

Is this correct?

Oils (from the cedar) also keep the wrapper nice and happy.

Stella,

All the things you've already found out are true but there are two other reasons that don't get mentioned very often. Basically, cigar smokers tend to be very visual people. Using cedar or aluminum tubes prevents them from seeing any variation in color when opening a box. Otherwise cigar makers would have to reject too many cigars.

Cuban cigars are sorted by shade packed in a very specific manner. Darker cigars are always on the bottom row and the top level goes in increasing shades from left to right because that's how most people read. This is one of the simple ways cigar geeks can immediately spot counterfeits. No matter what people may think about Castro, Cuban people have far too much pride in their legacy to send out cigars improperly packed for presentation.

Tubed cigars are generally fine smokes, just not aesthetically pleasing enough to make the first cut.

Chaos,

I haven't ordered in a while.

The "Doc" likes his cigars like his men. Thin, dark and Cuban.

Try the LADC "Edicion Especial", one of my favorites right now, along with the Ashton VSG.

VSG and ESG are very good, ESG is about $20 a pop, VSG $10.

Make sure you get eh LADC Edicion Especial, the normal LADC didn't really do it for me.

My cigar shop had them so maybe next time.

I picked up a Fuente Opusx and a La Riqueza Tatuaje reserve.in my opinion La  Riqueza makes some of the best cigars out there in the $10.00 range.

I wondered about the Tatuaje, but nobody I know had experience with them.

I've taken a liking to Acid's Kuba Kuba and Maduro's lately. The kuba's can be a little too sweet though.

Flavored cigars tend to be crap tobacco, BSB.

Why add  chemicals and stuff to premium tobacco?

They were recommended to me. Mind you I was severely hammered the few times I've had them so far. They do seem to have a hipster doofus vibe to them.

Any recommendations?

I really dig the VSGs and sungrown chateaus form Fuente.

The guy who really started flavoring cigars to death, Lars Tetons, is from here. He was stupid and showed the Drew Estates people all of the stuff and old packaging believing they were going to produce sticks together. Lars is a nutcase and they didn't need him once knowing what process is used to saturate the cigars without affecting the burn process too much.
