i am begining to feel i will achieve more gains if i skip my morning coffee and begin to take a protein shake instead. I for whatever reason cannont tolerate a cup of coffe and protein shake at the same time so unfortunatly my morning coffee must go.
Any advice for transitioning from coffe to a protein shake and still obtaining that coffe kick in the morning7? A buddy at the gym suggested Blue Thunder, any thoughts??

What about mixing instant coffee into a protein shake?

Or using already made coffee instead of water in the shake.

A caffeine tab.

All good recommendations here.
Of course there’s nothing wrong with using the caffeine sports drinks, but...
Many of them don’t taste that good.
You’ll pay more (unless you buy gourmet coffee every day).
Most importantly – I think – is you miss out on the antioxidant and other health benefits of coffee.
Necrosis posted some great info regarding the benefits of coffee in a sticky on this board a few months ago.
Unfortunately, I don’t see it up top anymore, but it’s worth searching for.

i know i used to have the similar problem but what i founf out worked and tased descent is to take a scoop (i use 2) of instant coffee with my vanilla flavored protein...it tasted pretty good, i also used to drop 4 liquid egg whites in there but i dont anymroe....but honestly if you use enough coffe 2-3 scoops of instant you want hardly taste the protein...

Please explain how/why you feel a cup of coffee may be limiting your gains? ::)

I don’t know that he’s necessarily worried about coffee inhibiting gains.
I kind of interpreted it as he can’t drink both coffee & a shake in the same sitting (maybe too much liquid, etc.), but wants the protein while maybe consuming an alternative source of caffeine for energy.

Too much liquid? What are we talking? 24-32 ounces (not too much IMO).
Maybe I should've rephrased my post. Oh well, still interested in his logic.

Hey, I didn't write it!
:D
Actually, I did, but I'm just speculating. I don't know what the reason is.
I drink a good bit of fluids throughout the day – enough to puzzle most “normal” folks.
Anyway, this thread got me thinking of something. And if he doesn’t respond soon I’m going to derail this thread and ask you what you think about the advice that one should avoid consuming larger volumes of H2O right before, during, and right after a meal because excessive water will dilute the stomach’s hydrochloric acid, thus impeding optimal digestion.

Yes Halifax, put hot coffee in a plastic shaker with the protein powder already in it, then put the lid on it and shake it, the container, really hard. I guarantee this combination will be explosive. :)

I find when i take both coffee and a protein shake at the same time that I am in the bathroom soon after. Like the coffee and protein cancel eachother out so they are basically going in one end and out the other.

have you tried any whey isolates or not using so much creamer or milk or whatever you use in your coffee instead just let them protein powder act as your creamer...

That or you could just throw some dry coffee into your shake

I guess I assumed the coffee would be cold and he'd put it in a blender with ice, kinda like an iced coffee.

I HIGHLY DOUBT that your body digests either that quickly...the coffee is a diuretic, but the liquid going out is not the same as that just went in. Your body is probably still absorbing the protein as you're taking your morning crap, so honestly I wouldn't really worry about it.

I know. Let him try it with hot coffee anyway. ;D
