“I didn't leave the Democratic Party. The party left me.” Ronald Reagan
The answer can be found in Reagan's 1964 convention speech, "A Time for Choosing":
"As a former Democrat, I can tell you Norman Thomas isn't the only man who has drawn this parallel to socialism with the present administration. Back in 1936, Mr. Democrat himself, Al Smith, the great American, came before the American people and charged that the leadership of his party was taking the part of Jefferson, Jackson, and Cleveland down the road under the banners of Marx, Lenin, and Stalin. And he walked away from his party, and he never returned to the day he died, because to this day, the leadership of that party has been taking that party, that honorable party, down the road in the image of the labor socialist party of England."

Was Reagan born old?

If I recall, a primary reason he left the Democratic party is that he opposed federal civil rights legislation
it's funny hearing Reagan talk about the destructive power of the 37% tax rate, uncontrolled spending, and the budget deficit. It's interesting that when he became POTUS he greatly expanded the federal debt and budget deficit. He also had no problem raising social security taxes to pay for his tax cuts for the weathly. He was also the first president to borrower the social security surplus in an attempt to offset his budget deficits.
Does anyone recall that recording he made against medicare. He warned that the next step on the slippery slope was full blown socialism where the govt told your children where they could go to school and what job that would have. How'd that work out?
Are Repubs ever right about anything?

Ha ha. Straw - you really need a history lesson.
Reagan had a dem congress to deal with who would only give him anything if he went along with their spending increases. However, he was also dealing with Carters' mess and the Cold War.

ok - so the budget deficits were the fault of the dems and had nothing to do with his tax cuts.
poor little Ronny was just a victim but then he was also dealing with Carters mess and a cold war.
hmm - sounds kind of like Obama dealing not only with Bush's financial mess (makes Carters mess seem like nothing) but his two wars.
Wasn't Carter also dealing with Nixons mess and the cost of Vietnam?

No props to Bill Clinton for keeping Classified FBI Files in the White House basement ?

or for pardoning a wanted felon (Mark Rich), after his wife made donations for the future Clinton Library ?

Well, obviously we havent gotten close to there, but we are down that slippery slope. We have gotten to the point where whe are giving free healthcare to children of middleclass parents. Absolutely disgusting.

we are ?
I'm not convinced your statement is true
even if we are giving free health care to children of middle class parents I don't share your passion of DISGUST over children getting healthcare
can you give me some examples that you find particularly disgusting?

Yes. It's called SCHIPS. Barack Obama expanded it to include children of parents making under $80 thousand a year. (I think that is the correct threshold) Entitlements to the poor are understandable. I might not ultimately agree with them, but they are understandable. But middleclass entitlements will destroy this country. And yes, I find that disgusting. And I love how you took the Howard Dean route and broke it down to me not wanting children to get healthcare.
