Title: UK and Irish people
Post by: Ursus on September 02, 2009, 03:56:37 PM
I have a job interview coming up soon and I have no suit  :-\

I tried some off the rack and the ones that fitted my shoulders etc were way too baggy at the waist. I think tailoring is pretty expensive.

Anyone any experience of Marks and Spencers 'Big and Tall' range or any suggestions for a lanky person to get a suit jacket that doesnt bellow out at waist!

Just go to any 'Big and Tall' store.  Buy one that's a lil too big as you mentioned, then take it to any good dry cleaner to tailor it for you.  Costs around £12-20.

Oh, I assumed it would cost way more.

Thats reasonable.

Thanks!

Why is this thread not titled

"I'm over six feet tall and my chest and shoulders are huge.  Just wanted you all to know" ?

That would be more honest

Because my chest is not huge. I have a small waist and my height is biggest problem not size

I never gave measurements at all

My only suit I ever had I got for work experience at school when I was 16 and is nowtoo small.

Just fork out the extra dough and get it tailored. You would be surprised how much more comfortable a tailored suit feels rather than an off the rack suit.

Just show up for the interview all oiled up in a glittery thong.

Can't go wrong with a dark suit, bro. Make sure your shoes are equally sober. None of that square-toe guido shit.

I have a wedding to go to sunday so i thought i could buy a tapered suit off the rack... the guy in the store just laughed at me... and said no way with my shoulder to waist ratio he said no way and to make one would cost £700 and would take 3 weeks... so he recommended NEXT
went to next.. the couldnt help either the one suit that did fit my shoulders arms and chest... was a suit for a fat man...  that taper was for a man with a 40inch waiste

I went to burtons and ones off rack were nice around shoulders but seriouslyso fat around the waist.

Even Remus uno and Burtons slim fits only went up to 48" and are very slim and notnicely shaped. seems most clothese these days are made for sli/skinny physiques, everything is fitted.

myinterview is onfridaythe 11th so i cant really have time to get it made. if this one is fine gd - martin johnson is face of M and S big and tall and he is 6'7 and 19stone witha 48-50" chest so hopefully i get one that fits great.

seriously tryM and spencers sum nice suits in store.or tryan independent suit store

A fine suit is going to cost you some coin.  Don't buy cheap shit if you are forced to wear suits often.  600-800 is a reasonable cost for a decent, starter suit.  Tailoring is a must, nothing fits anyone correctly "off the rack".

My boy is 5'9", 230.  His arms are 19".  His suits always look good so I asked him who tailors his suits.
He buys them off the rack at TM Lewin.  Dunno if ur proportions are similar to his, but u should check TM Lewin out.  More expensive than Next, Burton etc, but at least u aint spendin £700.

I feel your pain Ursus. Not easy to buy shit like suits off the rack. i managed to find a suit jacket from next a while back that fitted me perfectly, and i don't think i'll ever have the same luck off the rack again.

I think it is worth paying a few hundred for a tailored number, especially at your height. I was with one of my friends when he went and got himself a suit at a big and tall (he's 6' 10") and even with the tailoring i was surprised how reasonably priced it was.

In the United States there is a chain called "the Custom House" usually in upscale malls.  They specialize in made to measure shirts, but you can also get them to make Blazers (double breasted if you are big) and trousers that are great.  I would recommend a darkish blue blazer with charcoal gray trousers.

a suit is 'suited': pants and jacket are the same colour. Blue has the increased risk of making you look like someone from public transport.
