Title: Jay Rockefeller is an idiot.
Post by: Hugo Chavez on September 04, 2009, 02:20:14 PM
First off, he doesn't even know how to voice what he's trying to say.  He makes it sound like the threat is security :-\  And if he thinks shutting down the net is a viable response to an internet attack which he says could shut down America, it's gone over his head that shutting down the net would do the same thing!

I can't find a total but I bet its well over a trillion dollars a year:

Analysts at IDC estimated online advertising expenditures in the U.S. totaled $25.5 billion during 2007, and will grow to $51.1 billion in 2012. Major advertisers are expanding their online advertising budgets rapidly. Analysts at eMarketer estimate U.S. online advertising a bit lower at $23.6 billion during 2008. Online advertising in 2009 will account for about 8.5% of all ad expenditures in the U.S. Using the same ratio of 8.5% on a global basis would lead to an estimate that worldwide online advertising spending was about $55.5 billion in 2008.

Retailing online continues to be a booming business. Total online sales reached approximately $131 billion in the U.S. during 2007 (not including sales of travel), according to eMarketer, and will grow to $183.9 billion in 2012. Plunkett Research estimates those sales were $145.6 billion in 2008.

U.S. travel sales online for 2008 were about $105 billion, according to eMarketer, or about 14.2% of all U.S. travel expenditures. Plunkett Research estimates global travel expenditures online at about $300 billion for 2008.

You know they're after something else other than the stated reasons since there are solutions to security risks that obviously don't involve shutting down your ability to access the internet ::)

I would never get clearance :D  They would be like, so you posted under the name, "Hugo Chavez" for years and you want to help us with our security issues.. mmmkay...

Why don't they just run completely on a separate network?  Why do they need to even be open to attacks from the internet?  The most secure shit, they could run separate and still have a separate system for the net connection with no connection to the heart of their network.  Then they could implement whatever protocol they wanted without affecting the net.

For some reason, I think this is much more about your average Joe being able to get pissed, get on the net and in a short time have thousands of people listening to him.  Where if it were not for the internet, we would be left to writing individual letters and hoping the newspaper publishes our letter to the editor.  Rockerfeller even mentions something about that time where we only had that as an option which makes me think about his intentions here.

The military has several different connections ranging from personal use all the way up to top secret only.

NIPRNET, Non-Secure Internet Protocol Router Network
SIPRNET, Secure Internet Protocol Router Network(Up to SECRET)
JWICS, Joint Worldwide Intelligence Communications System(TOP SECRET/SCI)

I kinda figured it would be shocking if that were not the case.  So what's all this drama about?  These quoted 3 million cyber attacks per day on the DOD is not the drama they make it out to be or is it their fault for having routes into other networks?  This is all above my head so I don't get any of it.  Just think shutting down the net is like saving the victim from losing blood by stopping his heart.

The attacks more than likely take place on the sipr and nipr networks.  This is just a guess, but I would think jwics would be a completely isolated network.
