What makes me laught at people like moyers is he completely ignores the fact that we are broke as a nation and have a 9 trillion dollar deficit looming and 65 trillion in unfunded mandates.

The following is an excerpt of a conversation Moyers had with Peter Peterson in 2003 about the economic state of affairs at the time (health care wasn't even an issue on the table back then):
BILL MOYERS: And what about tax increases? I mean don't we have to cancel President Bush's tax cuts to the wealthy?
PETER PETERSON: I think we ought to look at an entire package, Bill, that includes spending and...

I'm not a fan of Moyers at all, but I do think he says some interesting things.

Well, that is the thing: Those in Washington make sure these type of debates only take place in a bodybuilding forum. Not long ago, when "God" (aka Obama, ::)) announced he was cutting military spending... in reality, and you probably already know this, he did cut military spending, he just cut some programs while he increased the funding of other programs. Yet all the major TV stations announced, as usual, that "God" had drastically reduced military spending.
No one is touching the military budget for a while.

I definately think we can adequately defend the nation without the current empire we have. We need to tell europe especially to step up and take over their own defense.

Slapper - I agree, and it is sad. I read Gibbons' Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire and it was very scary to see the similarities.

Not enough $$ on defense. Finding WMD's will require 99% of US budget on military.
