Title: PBW Comments - Judging will be equal both nights
Post by: 240 is Back on September 14, 2009, 05:11:41 PM
On PBW, he just announced that, as he said he knows all the pros are listening, that the Sat judging will be equal to Friday this year.  If you have a lead on Friday, it isn't going to be 'game over' for Saturday.

Bob Chick:

'Judging will be harder' as they will be judging equally on Friday and Saturday.   Once again - an open race.

All the top guys have an advisor or a guru in their corner at this contest...  they all have their own game plan, all vastly different approaches and views on how to get ready for a competition.

like, last year Dexter was leading on Friday, and Jay won Sat.  But dex's lead was too much to overcome, so Jay ost the title.  That couldn't happen this year, if I understood correctly.

bobservation translation... muscletech isn't the title sponsor this year and will prove to make the judges decision more difficult

At this stage in bodybuilding, it's easier.  Wouldn't say you need one but you'd really have to know your shit...

What, so who would have won last year, a draw?

Weider guy will win the show no matter what.  Joe will not feature an MD guy
on his magazine winning his coveted contest.  After the winner is decided then
maybe some fair judging will happen.

Sounds like a foolproof strategy to correct errant judges and prevent too much deviation.

I don't like this at all. The judges will be able to talk to others, look on the internet, view videos and photos, etc.

The whole idea of judging is to make it one person's decision unaffected by what others think, etc. It has been

shown in research that many people go along with others and start doubting what they believe if it varies from what

others believe.

On the other hand, maybe this is an improvement!? Let the judges get as many opinions as possible and view comparison photos and videos of

all contestants. Should be interesting.

I don't like the pre-judging and finals held on separate days.  I understand that it's done to draw more people to the Friday night show, but it should be about who looks best at showtime, not who can hold their condition over a 2 day period.

Exactly. It is in essence a two- day show now...or better yet,  it's now two shows in one. If they follow through with this. So you could have one guy looking good at prejudging and another guy looking good at the final...and the judges have to decide who looked better. They can't get it fucking right the way it is now

Guys, it's still done on a point system. Say there are 9 judges... They rank each competitor as to where they think they should place (say 1-6 for purposes of illustration). The scores are then tallied and the two lowest and the two highest scores are discarded. So, this leaves you with 5 votes. If Dexter scores 5 (all scores are 1s) to Jay's 10 (all scores are 2s) on Friday, and Jay scores 5 to Dexter's 10 on Saturday, the highs and lows that were discarded are then added BACK IN to determine the tie breaker. This would actually be a perfect operation if the "posing" round wasn't thrown in and scored.

You don't need one if you know your stuff. At this level, a small adjustment in food and/or water intake that day will make a huge difference...

The more I think about this the less I like it. I can't imagine the pros would endorse it. Typical IFBB initiative that the pros have to accept. Those who complain will place lower in the contest!

The point is judging is a subjective process and we have evolved systems that try to be fair. The idea is to get each judge to rate the competitors without any feedback from other judges or anyone else or anything else. The IFBB has a system of rating judges called the deviation system. In other words, no one wants to have scores out of wack with the others. Thus, if judges can assemble and chat we then change the subjectivity of the individual to the social acceptance of the group. When the competitors are judged the following day it will no longer be a purely subjective score from each judge but a community influenced score.

Competing and posing in comparisons is hard work. No bodybuilders should have to go through this on consecutive nights. In my opinion they should do away with the prejudging and do everything on the same night. It might take a bit longer but enthusiasts will appreciate the process.

If the Olympia is held on two nights then it is a simple matter to schedule the women's events on day 1 and the men on day 2.

I think the IFBB has opened a can of worms and we will see a lot of controversy if the scoring counts equally for both days.

Memo to appointed pro athletes rep: Did you canvass the pros before this initiative was implemented?

This is actually a very good point.
