Title: A question for the Liberals
Post by: Butterbean on September 23, 2009, 10:17:42 AM
I know Straw used the word "fundies" but assume (perhaps incorrectly? [if so, my apologies]) that he meant "conservatives"

Do Liberals really feel like Conservatives think this way?   :(

that's part of it but I also think the fundies entire value system is out of wack

somehow every life is sacred but as soon as it's born they've don't seem to give a shit

and as that life gets older (say from child to adolescent to adult) they care less and less

I think a lot of more liberal thinking people are disillusioned by the stringent right wing who are pro life (and willing to kill for it) yet support the death penalty.  A wise man once said "an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind."

One is an innocent life, the other has usually taken life and committed grave and atrocious acts.

Whats the problem?

Read the quote from above.

I dont agree with that.  I firmly believe in the Old Testament.

So you do not believe in forgiveness for ones sins?

Sure, they can be forgiven, but society also has the moral obligation to meet out a just punishment.  In some cases, societies have determined that certain crimes are so bad, so atrocious, that the death penalty is a just punishment.

So you agree with Sharia law as well?

I didnt say that.  I said in some cases, like first degree murder and other crimes particularly heinous, society has decided that the death penalty is a just punishment.  Sharia law is based on religion.

More people agree with me than they do with you on this BTW.

You said you based your view on religion specifically the old testament.  "society also has the moral obligation to meet out a just punishment.  In some cases, societies have determined that certain crimes are so bad, so atrocious, that the death penalty is a just punishment"

What exactly is a 'just punishment' in sharia law a crime that is deemed heinous is not necessarily the same as in other countries.  So you must support that correct?  You did say the death penalty is just punishment if a society deems it so.  So you must support a nations right to impose sharia law correct?

I grew up with 10 years of catholic school.  11th and 12th grade were public school when I moved.

I think people are different.  There are a lot of people who use religion as a free pass to support invading places for oil, putting people to death, etc.

I don't know that Jesus would have voted to invade Iraq because in 5 or 10 years they might have weapons.  We did a whole lot of "pre-emptive" killing and in the end, it seems the only thing that is different is a lot less people in iraq, and we have bases set up near oil fields.

So who knows.
