The Dead End Kids-(Youth Unemployment Hits 52.2%!)

The unemployment rate for young Americans has exploded to 52.2 percent -- a post-World War II high, according to the Labor Dept. -- meaning millions of Americans are staring at the likelihood that their lifetime earning potential will be diminished and, combined with the predicted slow economic recovery, their transition into productive members of society could be put on hold for an extended period of time.
And worse, without a clear economic recovery plan aimed at creating entry-level jobs, the odds of many of these young adults -- aged 16 to 24, excluding students -- getting a job and moving out of their parents' houses are long. Young workers have been among the hardest hit during the current recession -- in which a total of 9.5 million jobs have been lost.
SNIP-
Al Angrisani, the former assistant Labor Department secretary under President Reagan, doesn't see a turnaround in the jobs picture for entry-level workers and places the blame squarely on the Obama administration and the construction of its stimulus bill.
"There is no assistance provided for the development of job growth through small businesses, which create 70 percent of the jobs in the country," Angrisani said in an interview last week. "All those [unemployed young people] should be getting hired by small businesses."

More liberal economics at work. Raising the minimum wage, while politically popular amongst left wing do-gooders, has utterly destroyed entry level positions and youth employment.
Keep voting for do-gooders you morons, maybe we can get to 100% UE in our lifetime.

This isn't a result of minimum wage do-gooding. It's a recession. Adults are displacing children. The 52.2% weighs disproportionately in favor of teens. I'm sure that's also the fault of liberal do-gooders, though.

The minimum wage makes it harder for small businesses to hire teens and young people with no skills who not deserve a higher salary.
Im not talking about parties with this, but general ideas and policies that stifle employment.

In your first post, you blamed the current ue numbers for youth on the minimum wage. In this economy, those kids would not be getting hired- they are in competition with adults, now.

My first job I was paid $3.15 an hour. It sucked, but it allowed me to get other jobs and a work history.

Yes it is. It is directly related. Many businesses simply cant afford to pay people the federal min wage who have ZERO skills, especially when you consider the payroll tax, UE insurance, etc.
The federal govt is solely to blame for this and is making it worse in the name of "fairness".
I remember when I was young kids were short order cooks, lawn jockies, etc. Now, we just have mexicans doing it because its cheaper.
Its all related Al.

The employment picture would have been bleak for teens respective of the minimum wage. While employers aren't hiring unskilled, inexperienced teens for $7 an hour, they are hiring semi-skilled workers used to making $10 or $15 an hour for up to half that. Employers probably feel they will be more reliable and require less training.

Thats exactly the point. But a higher minimum wage makes it even bleaker and even more unlikely for employers to hire young people given what you wrote.

Meanwhile, you've got people who've gone from making $15/hour trying to support a family on minimum wage. They are probably thankful there employers can't legally pay them any less.
