Commercial airlines would have to fly new planes that emit fewer greenhouse gas emissions under a U.S. Senate climate change bill that is set to be introduced on Wednesday.

The legislation would require the government to write standards "applicable to emissions of greenhouse gases from new aircraft and new engines used in aircraft by December 31, 2012," according to a draft copy of the bill obtained by Reuters.

The Environmental Protection Agency would consult with the Federal Aviation Administration in setting the aircraft emissions standards, according to the bill.

To make sure aircraft and engine makers could meet the emissions goals, the government would be required to consider the technology that will be available at the time the standards take effect and it must consider the "cost, energy, and safety factors associated with the application of such technology."

Manufacturers like General Electric Co (GE.N) have been producing more fuel efficient and cleaner burning engines for the newest aircraft.

But the FAA and airlines have complained about European demands that U.S. airlines meet tougher emissions standards.

Leading proposals in Congress would exceed those requirements but airlines have previously said the changes would substantially increase their costs.

A spokesman for the U.S. airline industry's lead trade group, the Air Transport Association, deferred comment until carriers had a chance to more closely study the Senate proposal. (Reporting by Tom Doggett; additional reporting by John Crawley; editing by Mohammad Zargham

Whatever the increase is, its based on utter nonsense and will only hurt the economy.  This article is a perfect example of crony corporatism at all of our expense to fund Al Gore, GE, etc.

If the air planes were to actually pay the true cost of their emissions they'd be out of business.
What is your problem with development of more efficient engines anyway?
You must be well aware of that right now USA is dependant on other nations for fuel. what if that can change.higher fuel prices leads to development fast.

These companies will simply pass along the costs and drive up the cost of airfare, which will mean less fliers.

Hedge - read the article again, this is crony corporatism at its worst.

GE is one of the largest contributors to Obama and is one of the biggest lobbysits for govt money for green projects and is obviously getting the govt to mandate stricter rules so that they get more business.  Who pays out the ass in the end?  The individual flier.

They get people to believe that this is being done in the name of "the environment" so they mask the real agenda.

how much did GE give Obama, and how much did they give Mccain?

Alot to both.  Remember who owns MSNBC?  Imelt made a deal with the WH to be easy on them in return for green projects etc.  Look it up 240.

Yes, i'm well aware GE owns msnbc.  however, with "alot" being the number thry both got, it makes me think this cap/trade deal would be the plan if Mccain won as well.

33,
Do you believe there are some agendas that are gonna get pushed thru, regardless of whether obama or mccain wins?  Remember at that roast before the election - Mccain said no matter who wins, either one will have to follow their 'marching orders'...

Check this out 240.  Please, give me a good response, not a reflexive blame Bush routine.  what do you think about this?

I would have to see the numbers to form my own opinoin.  how much will my elec bill go up, without cap/trade?  how much will it go up, WITH cap/trade?

Over the course of 30 years, please show me the costs of each.  THAT is what matters to me.  Not some message board antic of how zero sucks or bush is evil.

Can ANYONE please tell me what skyrocking energy costs will be for 30 years without cap/trade, and what they'll be with?  If a 5-year investment in higher bills equates to 25 year of lower bills wihout mid-east being able to jack up rates, I'm content paying it.  if it'll be cheaper in the long run, I'm down for it, as would most people.

i suspect you don't have that data 33, which means we're just farting in the wind here.

It will go up because they are preventing new nuclear plants from being formed.  Its simple supply and demand.
