Title: Discussion regarding the 202lbs and under class?
Post by: Ursus on September 30, 2009, 11:47:13 AM
Why is there a 202 class and not a 260lbs+ class?

i think its ok, it gives hope to a lot of guys who are too good for NPC, but not good enough for the IFBB.

i see it as a middle ground for the guys that have less than stellar drug dealers.

I think there should be an under 220 pound (100 kilos) and over 220 class, and the winners of each should face off for the overall, like it was in the 1970s.

either that, or we should go to three height classes, under 5'8, under 6', over 6'

or maybe go by BMI

just some thoughts

if it was a short class, guys like Dexter, Rockel, Yamagishi, silvio could compete in it

midget class
Thats what i thought but its really non-sence.
We have a great midget who took 2nd in the open class.

So it means 202class=inferior to the open class.

What if the 3 best guys are all in taller classes. A show off could be the best vs the 5th best - that would be dumb.

Also why are so many guys dieting down 15-20lbs to compete in it when its viewed by many as shit.

I cant imagine lee priest would have dieted down

LOL. How did we ever get so jaded? Remember when we were wide-eyed kids who believed Frank Zane when he said his bbing success was due to a stringent eating regimen.

No? Me neither.  ;D

Some good positive comments here.

I was somewhat surprised by the sparse crowd that gathered to watch the 202's. I expected those seats to be filled to capacity but actually it turned out to be far from packed.

I believe that those guys deserve as much accolades at the other Olympians who draw the fans, but for numerous reasons  - they don't.

Any of you GetBiggers got any positive idea how interest in that 202 competition can be improved?

Great idea!  You can't choose your height; three height classes would let appropriate heights compete with one another.  I often tease the little guys, but I'd love to see, for example, Paul George, 5’3”, Samir Zebib 5’4”, Neil Gardner 5’2” on the same stage and not pitted against a really tall guy until an overall round.   :D

No! Those little guys have as much discipline and gym work ethic as the big guys.  If they don't float your muscle fantasies you don't have to pay attention to their contests and results, but just because you are not interested in something doesn't mean it shouldn't exist.  >:(

Spot on! These midgets scream "insecurity issues" louder than a homing SCUD. It ruins the "sport", only MEN with respectable height should be allowed on stage.

lee was between 198 and 204 when he won his shows
and as high as 220 mid nineties or so,,,,i think 202 is great for the bber who due to shorter stature or structure and or joint capacity to build or carry over 202 and up,gives all the welters, middles even lightweights chance to compete at 175 on up to the weight limit to at least try.back before 202's many, many great lighweights and middles never competed after winning nationals weight class wasn't worth it.some examples of the smaller guys who did ok was dearth, benfatto, labrada, different times tho, today david henry is good example of a lower weight class success, and he is even starting too look to big for that class.

I know how to make all the various Olympia contests (men, women) more exciting:  Limit the contestants to those who have won a contest in the past 12 months.

that will make the pre olympia shows all much more exciting. however it would probably make the olympia less exciting, tired worn out bodies thathave been dieting all year to win a show..

Maybe I don’t pay as much attention as I used to, but it used to be that in addition to reporting on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners magazines and websites used to report Overall winner, Class winner, Most muscular, Best poser, Audience favorite, etc.  And there was money attached to each of these categories.  Do these categories still exist?  Do they only exist at certain shows?  Is there still money attached to these categories?  It seems like a nice way to differentiate the contestants and keep people interested.

most muscular was from the AAU days, when the overall winner was based on more than just physique, including interview ability, skill in other sports, physical appearances, etc.

that's how IFBB differentiated itself from the rest, saying that they were only going to judge physiques.

i have said it repeatedly.. the 202 is a silly class.. who came up with this silly arbitrary number?.. and why? it is much too limiting to many of the competitors.. you already have henry, eduardo, flex, english and i few others at the limit.. where do they improve? they already have the "refining" down so please dont anyone use that idiotic word.. they have the conditioning down.. now they cant afford to add even 2-3 pounds of muscle the rest of their competitive career if they stay in that class.. what a waste..

just call it what it is .. A SHORT CLASS.. all the competitors are 5'6 or under.. so let them be put up against those of like stature and bring in their best package. why do some have to stay at a silly weight and watch other catch up to them? this was obvious when english and henry for the last two seasons had to stay at 202 and watch and wait while flex came from 185 to challenge them at his current 202.. all henry and english could do was watch and hope they did not gain any more muscle to go over the limit..  so in essence the ifbb is saying we want these pros all at the same weight so no one has a advantage..

and trust me it is going to get boring.. do you really think eduardo and henry will look any different after a while?.. or flex?  or english?.. they will have to bring the same package every time out because of a silly number.. the only other option for them is to come in smaller  ::) these are pros.. they should not be told what weight they should come in at.. the open class is not limited neither should the pros.. how stupid to think other wise.. it is up to english to determine what he thinks is his best look.. he has said that he feels he would look his best at 215 or so.. that is his call.. not the ifbb...

the excitment of the open class is the aspect of not knowing.. what will kai look like?.. what will jay do? will he go for the freak look or will he streamline? will heath add the needed size? will dexter go for shredded or more full..? with the 202 we already know.. henry will be 202.. english will be 202.. eduardo will be 202.. flex?.. same.. so where is the excitment?.. oh, you will have some new comers that are 10 or so pounds under the 202 limit and we can sit back and watch him grow into the class while the others are held back and waiting for him to play catch up with a look that may not be their best.. so what is their option?

well, they can go into the open class and get smoked.. or the ifbb can grow some grey matter and make it a short class.. this way we have hide, rockell and others come into the class with out having to drop valuable muscle and not be in their best interest.. but, it would be exciting to see what englsih would do.. would he bring 215 and shmredded?.. would henry go up a bit to 210 or so to challenge.. or would ronny just dominate at 215? we wouldnt know.. but would like to see... right now, i know what i ma getting.. and bored is the answer.. :(

You hit the nail on its head there. They are all midgets. If the purpose of the 202 class was to introduce more aesthetic bodybuilders then this has failed. It has merely enabled guys with the same bloated physiques to be winning shows, albeit just at a smaller height.

Exactly!!

This is what they should do

1. Midget class, no weight limitations

2. Approximetely 180-220lbs class NORMAL HEIGHT PPL more classic aesthetic looking class

3. Open class, no limitation on height or weight

Why is there a 202 class and not a 260lbs+ class?
The under 202 class is a great idea and it gives huge motivation for many pro bodybuilders on the world and a chance to compete at the Mr. Olympia and get a much better publicity.

Anyway I think it should be 'under 210 class' or at least 'under 205 class'...

Why is that? I reckon it's a cool throwback to the old-school where Franco Columbu got recognition, and a good step towards solving the whole problem of size beying rewarded over everything. Too tiny to register with the grown ups? 202! Afraid to put on real muscle?.....202! I think Dave Henry is great, so it's awesome he gets publicity this way, he can always compete in the open class, but he knows he come 10th in everything, so what's the point?

I'm surprised you are against it as a shorter guy?!

European BB federations limit the weight with the height of the competitor, so you have height in cm -90 for example, so a 180cm guy could weight in at 90kg.
