Title: Never been to Vegas..
Post by: Brixtonbulldog on October 07, 2009, 07:34:07 AM
Plannin a trip next summer with my girl and another couple.  Any ideas?  We're lookin to avoid the crowds as much as possible.  I don't mind going all out on the hotel room and I plan on droppin another K playin blackjack (sucks to be poor, haha).  Anyone a vegas vet?  Tips/ideas?

I have never been there either
but
My parents go regularly and say there is so much to do, even if you do not gamble

Fill up your trunk with LSD, cocaine, alcohol, mescaline, and cannabis, assorted alcohols and a small vial of adrenochrome. Thank me later.  :)

Contact Getbig's very own Wiggs. He is a Las Vegas native. He will surely pick you up in his ride and escort you around to the MUST SEE's and take you to Gold's Gym on Flamingo Blvd.

Don't go to Vegas if you don't like crowds.

I think the closest I've been to Las Vegas is cranking one out to Molly Sims during the NBC show 'Las vegas' replays on TNT primetime in the daytime.

I've heard the crowds aren't bad during the week but the weekends are crazy.  What else could there possibly be to do in Vegas except gamble, drink, and go see the shows?  I don't think the girls we'll be with will be down for the strip clubs ;D

Dr Chimps must be referring to Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Great book, great movie. Quotes from the book on the internet somewhere, worth the effort to look them up.

Crowds & summer time go together. Weekends or during the week, not much of a difference. Around Christmas & New Years , for me, is the best time. Super Bowl time is party time 24/7. Girl friends are nice, but it is Vegas after all. Sex, sex, and more sex everywhere. And everyone seems to want to hook up, from the weekend party girls from LA to the local stuff. 10, or near 10,  girls everywhere. Might find that the K you plan on dropping at the tables is not nearly enough.

Try booking rooms by going on line and looking up Vegas packages a month or so before planning to go. Prices are always changing. Vegas needs the tourist bucks and the summer rates should drop even more, because the economy is only going to get worse. The Red Rock, outside of Vegas if you want to avoid the major crowds, is cool. Planet Hollywood and Hard Rock are both extra cool. Check the pools out for some unreal hot chicks. Including some exceptional well kept cougars.

Vegas mid summer is high season so you won't be able to avoid the crowds period.  Get used to it.

Vegas is over rated.. Go to New Orleans and stay at Harrah's Casino.. Then hit Bourbon Street after.. And if you can swing it. Get your ass to a Saints Game to top off the weekend.

I've lived in some nice places with Hawaii being the best but I love Vegas too.  It is literally impossible to be bored in this town.  If you get bored it can only be because you yourself are boring or you don't know how to have fun.  Since i gamble I am in heaven, but there are so many other things to do.  Each hotel is like a different country.  There is skiing just an hour outside of town, water skiing on Lake Mead, shopping galore, off roading paradise, hiking, hot chicks all over in the casinos, sports book where you can kick back and watch giant tv's playing every game at once, see shows at night.  Anyone who says Vegas is over rated or boring is just boring themselves.

Vegas expert here! I probably know more about Las Vegas than Benny Binion. (He died years back, but when I was a kid he used to give me rolls of nickels every time we visited him. My dad was a big time LV act in the early days.)

Here's some basic info for planning purposes ......

BEST TIME TO COME: 1. Come during the Olympia .... Two reasons: A. The weather is a bit less warm but the hotel pools are still open. B. The Olympia expo is worth a visit if you are into bodybuilding and fitness and want to meet the pros and top amateurs.

HOTELS: 2. Check out I4vegas.com for darn good rates unless you get a hell of a good deal through your travel agent which includes air and room. But you should know that the room rates that the LV hotels offer include two persons per room while most travel deals charge you extra for the second person.

3. Best Strip hotels in oder of Best-est ...... The Encore - Expensive but worth it. / The Wynn - Expensive but worth it. / Mandalay Bay - The Hotel / Bellagio / The Mirage / Caesars Palace. Note: The Mandalay Bay is actually two hotels in one with THE HOTEL offering great (but not real huge) suites.  If you can get a "The Hotel" rate of $145 a night or less, you will definite like it.

The Luxor is OK and might prove impressive for your first visit but once you know them all, it is far down the Best-est List. At present they offer three meals in the buffet (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner) for about $30. Not a bad deal but some of the others charge $20 for the same deal. If that offer is avaialbe during your stay, I suggest you try it once and see if you want the same deal the second day. Eating more than one buffet meal in a single day is usually not too pleasant.

5. Best Downtown Fremont Street hotels ... Only one really ... The Golden Nuggat ... Less than $50 a nite is a good deal here. (Very small pool area but the shark tank and the slide throuh it are interesting.-

6. Best off the Strip hotels .... Best of the best is The Palms. Plus they have great paying slots. The only thing bad about the Palms is the buffet and the lighting in the 24/7 Coffee Shop. Great movie theater (Brendan) and fast food court.  Second best is definitely The Hard Rock which has the best pool party (Rehab) in the USA on summer Sundays.  The "M" is about eight miles south of the Strip but definitely worth a visit. Great buffet and decent pool area. The only bad thing here is something that they call a "resort fee".

7. CIty Center will be opening mid December this year and should be one of the finest places to stay on  the Strip, but it's too early to make accurate comments on that multi-billion dollar project yet.

For some reason I hate the Venetian and the Palazzo but I have to admit that the Palazzo does have some damn nice rooms. It's just that the casinos remind me of a big, huge, square box with shitty lighting.

All other hotels are fine but not as good as those mentioned above. If you do come for the Olympia, stay at the Orleans for at least two of those nights.

Las Vegas room rates are very cheap starting Sunday through Thursday unless here is a huge convention in town but  rise as high as possible (based on supply and demand) for Friday and Saturday nights.

GAMBLING: Best slots  .... definitely The Palms followed by South Point and then the M. Best Craps .... Any casino that offers a $3 minimum. Check out the Golden Gate (Fremont Street) but only during the mid week period. All table minimums rise on the weekends when the suckers come to town. If you want to play the tables with low minimums, go to the smaller casinos downtown or head on over to Pahrump.

BEST SANDWICH AND SHRIMP COCKTAIL.  THE GOLDEN GATE (in the rear of the casino). Get a Players' Card and you pay only 99 cents for a shrimp cocktail.

It should be similar to a ghost town starting on Sunday night through about 10 PM on Thursday nite when the visitors from Los Angeles start arrvining for  the weekend.

FIre away if you have any specific questions. I can't think of anything you could ask that I would no be capable of answering.

Seen it all and done just about everything it has to offer. Ever rubbed elbows with the Big Boys on many an occasion.

Forgot to mention the following....

Most people run into a bit of trouble when they come to Las Vegas for their first time with their girlfriend and/or with other couples.

I think the big reason for that is that there is just too damn much to do on any given day while here in town.

One person wants to do this and another person wants to do something else. Or one person wants to leave and another person doesn't.

Here's my suggestion based on years of experience as a Las Vegas visitor.....

Give yourself a few hours of free time each day. Take three hours each day and go your own way. Or let the girls go shopping or to the spa while the guys hit the tables or check out the action. Then meet for lunch and discuss the remainder of the day and dinner and show plans.

Here's a suggested schedule that always worked for us ..... Change it according to your own desires, but follow the basics and I guarantee you'll all have a great time ...

9:00 AM          ,,, Meet for breakfast in your hotel
10 AM - NOON...Three hours for the guys to look around / Three hours for the girl's to look around
NOON - 1 PM   ... Meet for lunch at the hotel
1 PM - 4 PM     ... Foursome casino walking  tour starting at the Mandalay Bay and all the way down to the Bellagion(both sides of the street)
5 PM - 6 PM    .... RelaX
6 PM - 8 PM   .... Cocktails and dinner ..... Charlie Palmer Steak House in the Four Seasons (Mandalay Bay) (Impress the ladies)
10 PM -          ... See the best CIrque Show in Town KA at the MGM Grand.

The above could prove to be the best of all possible days while here in town.

Do the same the next day with a walking tour starting at Caesars and continue on down both sides of the STRIP to The Encore and a dinner at Sinatra's followed by La Reve (another Cirque type show at the Encore).

Note: Neither of the above are inexpensive restaurants, but will be long remembered.

I went to Vegas three times (2005, 2006, and 2008 for the Olympia).

Awesome place - stayed at the Luxor the first and third times and stayed at the new Planet Hollywood hotel the second time.

Not the best place in the world if you don't like crowds though.

Not gonna happen!

The Platinum is very nice if you want to be "off" the strip.  The *O* show ast the Bellagio is a must IMO.

stuntmovie and noworries, my neighbors are leaving tomorrow for Vegas and were wondering what the best breakfast was?  Thoughts?  I've always been pleased with the Mandalay Bay.

That schedule is NOT practical by any means. Traffic is so horrendous and the crowds are so deep that it took me 30 minutes to walk out my room at the Monte Carlo 11th floor across the street to the M&M store(oh, brother!) to get some M&M's. Another 30 to get back. 1 small tiny trip. 1 hour.

Great stuff guys.  Since the other couple is mainly trying to put this together I will def pass this stuff on so keep it coming.  Crowds are to be expected but we're just trying to avoid the worst of it.  I'm the only one of the group that gambles (or is any good at blackjack, lol) so that leaves us open for shows, dining, etc.

And thanks for all the suggestions regarding humping random poon and so forth but we aren't "those" kind of couples, hahaha!

Right now I'm thinking flying out on a Sunday and back on Thursday so we have enough time to see all that we want.  1k is light for a gambler but that's more to spend on the hotel and food and will keep me from overdoing it as I normally would.

Questions..

Def be needing a hot tub in the room, most places have it?  Lookin at up to 200 a night for a nice room if it's worth it.

Worth it to rent a car or walk?

Best casinos for card players in terms of most games, best dealers, good rep, etc.. (other than high rollers)?

Only rent for the day if you plan to take a day trip somewhere out of town.  Driving/traffic is insane.  After the cost of parking and valet service and the time you'd waste, you'd be better off with a taxi or limo, not to mention, you don't want to be drinking and driving.  There's also a monorail (not sure of its route) and a free tram that runs between the Bellagio and the Monte Carlo with stops inbetween.

Actually Vegas has a very very cold winter.  It snowed last year on the strip several times.  Dips into the 20's at night.
