Title: bodyfat of pros and top amateur question.
Post by: Tom on October 08, 2009, 11:28:19 AM
what's the lowest bodyfat one can have year round and not be sick and feel like shit?

is there a difference between for instance the bodyfat of a pro bb and a top npc competitor in regard to how much each has year round (bodyfat %)

Anything below 5% is pushing it, you start to lose essential body functions as the body fat decreases and your body goes into shock/panic mode, below 2.5-3 is death.

The lowest bodyfat someone can go around with year around without being sick or feeling like shit really depends on the person. I have friends that can stay around 6-7% bodyfat year round. Me, however, once I start getting around 6% I feel like shit and my joints ache all the time. I can go around year round comfortably at 9% and still look lean.

Perfect from a health standpoint are 12 %. Under 10 % is already not healthy, but as been said before, highly individual.

Even BB in contest shape have mostly around 10 % BF. The "trick" of the BB is that they only use the caliper to measure their BF, but the caliper only considers the subcutaneous fat and not the visceral fat. So when they claim 3-4 % BF that's bullshit, that's only the subcutaneous fat.

Believe it or not, I actually read a study of some physicians measuring the bf% (the water tank method) of some famous bicyclists and they found it to be under 1,5-2% in some cases. Didn't make much sense to me, those dudes could barely be alive.

well skin calipers only measure subcutaneous fat, and with that method you could get readings of 2-3% bodyfat on most pros come contest time. but their TRUE body fat is higher, because there is also intramuscular fat stores, and visceral fat.

Flex Wheeler was measured at 0.0% body fat by Billy Smith at Golds Venice using calipers 3 weeks before the 1993 Mr. O, which was reported live by Jim Quinn during the broadcast of the show on ESPN.

They should make T-shirts that say "Twink-Like"

You could force people to wear them until they reach non-twink status.

LOL 0% on L.A Fitness $3 calipers isn't the same as 0.0% in a university dunk tank or ultrasonic reading.
