Title: Does chalk belong in the gym?
Post by: jtsunami on October 12, 2009, 03:14:39 PM
Anybody else believe this doesn't belong in gym's?  This stuff get's everywhere, affecting everybody, what if you have an iphone and you get chalk dust in it or get chalk on your other cell phone.  I mean comon people, if you don't have that strong of a grip then don't lift the weight, let your hands get stronger.  Maybe get some lifting gloves.

Yes it should be as long as whoever is using it makes an effort to keep it somewhat in control.  You may not notice a difference on lighter weights, but take my word for it it makes a huge difference when the weight gets heavier in certain exercises.

There are places like Curves and 24hr Fitness for people that fear breaking a sweat, hearing someone grunt or getting chalk on their purse.

Things to ban in gym before banning chalk:

1. cell phone
2. tap out gear
3. under armor shirts (unless its UNDER another shirt)
4. couples who kiss prior to each set
5. that 138lb giant who always has a tip for you
6. the dude with 13in guns who does 6 sets of wrist curls then calls it a day
7. the sweaty fat bastard who leaves lake eire on the bench after he woddles away from it.
8. the 2 teen agers who are "looking to get ripped, not big" so limit their OH presses to the bar only
9. the guy who drops the massive 50lb curl bar after burning out a set of 6.

I think this is a pretty silly question if you can train back with just your hands no chalk/straps chances are you arent lifting as heavy as you could. If you are then you have bigger problems then worrying about chalk actually working out maybe something you want to look at.

Ive never used chalk but its been suggested to me a few times i use straps for back and traps though. Your grip will give out before your traps and back the vast majority of the time and again if thats not the case which it probably is for you JT you need to actually try training...maybe not worry so much about your iphone and music and concentrate on your workout.

Do you train with straps at any point an time?  Say during shrugs or deadlifts or barbell rows or possibly clean and press?  If so, then chalk does the same exact thing but actually helps a little more IMO.

It definitely has its place in a gym, but that really depends on the type of gym you work out in.  Next time you are working out, pick up some chalk and do shrugs or deadlifts with it.  You will be shocked at how effective it is for helping with a grip.

if i had to put money on it id say jt doesnt do deads or bb rows maybe shrugs but probably with weight light enough to grip thumbless and still be ok.

I'm debating whether I should drop a 45 lb plate on your iphone, or just take it to the restroom and drop it in the crapper. Probably drop the plate on it as I have a feeling you will have no problem diving into the crapper after it.

I would be willing to bet that as well.  To say chalk has no place in a gym is pretty silly. Either its a very fancy gym that doesnt go go up past 100lb dumbells or he really doesnt know how to workout.

Only a person deathly afraid to deadlift at maximal ability would say that.  The only people I see using chalk deadlift 6 plates a side and up and as far as I'm concerned, when you're doing that, you own the gym whilst you're there.  Everybody else is playlifting and just wouldn't understand.

I can't stand bitches who complain about using chalk in a gym. If your listening to music, how is chalk getting into your i-phone? You can't be listening and with your I-phone/mp3 laying on the floor or bench at the same time. Unless like you said originally, you were using your Cell phone, which has no place in a gym. Chalk does. On a positive note, your in a gym that bans chalk and you don't like it, so you're where you need to be. But them again, why are you bitching about it then?

I train at a powerlifting gym and the owner still hates chalk. Or more specifically he hates how people don't clean it up after they're done. It's easy to clean up. Use one of those spray bottles you use to clean up benches or tanning beds.

I just apply the chalk over the container so there is minimal mess. So minimal it can be cleaned by just wiping it off. There are those who chalk their backs and such and that could get messy but they should be cleaning up after themselves.
