I honestly thought that if a person trained heavy and intense, and ate lots of carbs and protein, they could get big enough to be a IFBB pro. I thought that if you followed the pros routines in the magazines that you could be pro, as long as you had good genetics, trained hard, and had followed their diets.
By the time I was 18, I realized all ifbb pros were drugged up :)

Awesome..and when I was 4 , I thought there really was a big fat man in a red suit who brought presents to all the good little children of the world in a sleigh pulled by flying reindeer...

Pretty much..they had forums in BB mags discussing steroids openly. Even though I knew that was the route, I made a decision to be natural until I turned 20. Building a base without the gear was smart and what the guys at the gym I looked up to suggested.
Safe to say, I was given the right advices

FLEX magazine didn't trick you. It's your fault for not reading the fine print in the back of the mag which advises youngsters to start juicing themselves to the gills on their 20th birthday (like Bob Chicarello) if they hope to have a physique like those that appear in these pages.

when i was 16 i thought all the girls loved my personality

Remember Chick started training when he was fairly young, like 14 or 15. So he had around 5yrs before he would have hopped on gear when he turned twenty.
You'll also notice he did not say that he took his first shot @ 20yrs old, just that was the age he decided that he could consider taking something.
Far cry from these days, when someone is looking at Cutler in a magazine, trains for 7 months while eating everything in sight, and when they're aren't big (but fat) they load up on gear. Having never learned to properly train, eat or diet, they get big, bloated, acne and eventually burn out. I've seen it countless times over the years.
-
I was 17 or 18 when I realized this too. I guess I was also naive. I started training when I was 13 and was often accused of taking steroids, and thought it was rediculous as all I did was eat a ton and train hard.
-
i knew about the age of 15 that pro's were using Supplements...However, i didn't know those "supplements" were really steroids...
I think Lee started using steroids when he was 13 years of Age.
-
The pro's take drugs? :'(

Bob can't believe that there's so many 17 and 18 year olds out there who still believe in Santa Claus.
What crazy thing are ya gonna tell Bob next? . . . that these same teenagers are buying bogus bodybuilding supplements because they believe (haha) that the pro on the label is actually taking the crap that's inside the container (and if he is, that it actually makes a difference to his extremely roided-up physique.) There's no way anybody could be so naive, right Bob?

HAHA....same here. Sad to say but i was a little older and still believed pros were natural. Especially with all the supplements too. TAKE THIS PRODUCT AND LOOK LIKE THIS PRO. MONEY-TECH is the worst influence, especially on newbies.

supplements=steroids. selfemployed= g4p.

YUP EXACTLY. or they watch someones dvd before they go train and try to do the same weights they seen ruhl cutler or coleman etc...do, then get frustrated why they cant lift the same weights the pros do. Or alot of people want to look like a "bodybuilder" and after a year or so of training all thier doing is "strongman or powerlifting" training and basically get frustrated about why thier not getting the results or "physiques" they want.

Natural bodybuilding is a failure. When is anyone going to get that. It has failed time and time again for countless people. If it was a business the plug would have been pulled long ago.
It is amazing Bob Hoffman's marketing ploy has led to the longest running myth in American consumer culture. He was some genius. He message transcended to generations that werent even born yet. Probably using quantum physics of some sort.

so... Chick has been on and off drugs for 20+ years...

Awesome..and when I was 4 , I thought there really was a big fat man in a red suit who brought presents to all the good little children of the world in a sleigh pulled by flying reindeer...
Common sense told me at the same age that a fat man in a red suit with flying reindeer, who gave all the food children of the world presents, in one night, on one trip, was a lie. Also, because I told my aunts what I wanted, and I got it, with the gift saying from them---not Santa
Chick I too thought I could get close to pro size, but we learn the hard way. By the time you were a gladiator, I didn't know what bodybuilding was. By the time you got your pro car, I didn't know what G4P was, I knew that there was some areas of gayness, but what bodybuilders did to make ends meet, shocked me.

I enterted my first show in 1979 at 13 years old, and you're right...I didnt take anything until I was about 21.

Yup...there are things that shocked me in life as well...amazing what we learn through maturation and experience

I bought a few copies of Flex when i was like 12 and was first starting to mess around with weights, i seriously thought that with 10 years training and diet you could look like Arnold Lmao...
I remember showing a friend the magazine and saying "wouldn't it be cool to have muscles like that" then he looked at cover picture of Ronnie and said "that's the gayest thing ever". lmfao, i remember when king kamali was advertising Nitro Tech Night-time in the magazine, i still remember the add where he was pretending to be asleep with the tub beside him lmao, i bought Joe Weider protein supplement once then lol.
Then i stopped weightlifting about 6 months later and didn't start again till January 2008, now im in it for life as natural.

don't overestimate the role that your aunts played, your aunts were just "the finishing touch" in you getting your gift at Christmas.

Bob did your legs grow the fastest on you during your teens? Or did everything grow equally? Which bodyparts responded best to the stuff at age 21?

My legs were way ahead of my upper body during my teen years to my early 20's...it took me a long time to fill out as I have a wide shoulder structure

plz post bigger pic asap

I'd say that's pointless. Look at Phil Heath. What "base" did he come from?
Good to at least make some real gains though, before diving into the disgusting world of bb drugs. At least you can say, you put on X amount on your own, unlike someone like Branch Warren or Dave Henry. These guys couldn't eclipse 180 naturally.

Bob, do you feel that if you pushed your conditionning harder you could have won a few shows (in the open not masters)
I feel so
-
I did also......but I also thought wrestling (wwf and nwa) were real fights. No one could tell me the opposite. What about the vitamins, the prayers, the training?
-
I got a bit confused when Ashley was bragging to be "drug free".

i think most kids know they aren't natural, at least the smart ones do :P
i remember being in a waldon's bookstore back in 95 or so, and some middle school aged kids saw a flex magazine and one said "he's on steroids"

No...I placed runner up twice and top 6 a few times. I think turning pro earlier would have been the ticket
Could I have pushed the envelope more? sure...but we all make our choices and mine was to explore other ways of making a living from the sport...I have no regrets

Yeah I thought this too! I thought the nutrition was that good, and the drug testing was like a real thing, government enforced, hahaha how wrong I was.
There was this one pic of Nasser doing a MM pose which I found particularly impressive, but now when I look at it I can see not only is he obviously not natural but his delts are full of synthol!

With family /deeply religeus guys like Haney in the sport, it was a bit hard to believe he'd resort to drug use. He looked amazing even w/o drugs in 1990!!!

I'm pretty sure that Lee Haney didn't use steroids because I have an old VHS video where Lee himself says "Bodybuilding is exercise and nutrition at its best, which does not mean the use of anabolic steroids or other such chemicals. For me, Joe Weider's dynamic muscle builder is number one."

Then what did he mean when he said "I promissed Shirly, I'll never stick another chemical into my body" After retiring?

I miss the muscle builder and weight gainer chewable tablets. They may not have worked but they sure were tasty.

"take this supplement and you'll get big too!"
Lying about how natural you are is typical.

I had a similar experience. And I don't know which magazines chick was reading that was open about drug use...especially when he was a teenager ::) As an ignorant teen I had subscriptions to FLEX and M&F, and the ONLY time they ever mentioned steroids was to talk about gyno or roid rage or something negative like that.
My sophomore year in high school I actually wrote a letter to FLEX for confirmation or to debunk the myth...of course I never heard from them, nor did they print my letter in the reader's section :D

If you dont feel like, or unable to smile correctly dont bother. It looks silly and fake. Try to use more of your upper face muscles when hitting a smile, that way you wont come across as a sad joker on pictures. Its the more natural smiling approach that you need , use the muscles around your eyes. You re a good speaker, but phony as hell as i have judged it.

Well then what happened? Why did they stop? During "my day" the only magazine that spoke openly about drug use was Greg Zulak's column in Musclemag...if other mags were so open about it back in the 80's why did they stop?

Because back then steroid use was legal. As soon as it became illegal, they stopped. As well as the trend in the very late 90's was to be "all natural." Body-For-Life came out, MD went to the All Natural thing...everything changed. But then that started to go belly up, yet 'roids are still illegal so they choose to not run those topics.
As far as MMI, I'm not at all sure, but being out of Canada, they may have a loophole in regards to the steroid questions being printed/asked in the Zulak columns. As well, you'll notice Zulak would constantly preface his answers with warnings of how illegal the drugs are and all that...

That top 6 is like a whos-who of 80's bbing! And he beat Neal Spruce, Ron Love and Everson. Ron Love was a very good bber.

Chick and I are the same age. I used to read all the mags and don't remember much talk about steroids, and what little you did hear always downplayed their effects. Here's a direct quote from the Pumping Iron book:
"The bodybuilders who use them, do so because they believe they make them heavier and stronger. Whether or not they actually do is still in court. Of eleven controlled studies, six found that weight and strength are increased by the drugs, five found they are not. The researcher in charge of the most recent of these studies is Dr. Larry Golding of Kent State Univ. Golding probably knows as much about the relation of steroids to sport as any man in the country, and it is his belief and the findings of his study that steroids cannot make anyone bigger or stronger except by touching a psychological mechanism known as the placebo effect."
If you think about it, why would there be truthful discussion about steroids in the bbing media? There was no money in it for the mags, whose advertisers were mainly companies that sold protein and weight gain powder.

Getbig, post a photo, it's fake. Post a video, probably still...a fake. That fails, they'll die by 40. Too small, swimmer. Too big, all drugs.
hahaha, We've really got it all covered here. Nice work guys.

Yes I remember that article, I just saw it going through some old mags a few days ago. But in that article, as with every other article they printed, it was to show how bad and "evil" they are. SO why would they show them in such a negative light, only to have a glorified photo shoot, praising a guy who makes his living off of excessive amounts of these drugs on the next page??
I also remember an article where they showed gyno, they had these pictures of this guy with horrible gyno and were showing that they were the expected side effects of steroid use, or the "DEA" article showing the laws, and the cover page to that article showed Shawn Ray in hand cuffs...lol remember that one?
They also had a two part article on a guy who never went pro, forgot his name. But again, the point of the article was him showing how stupid he was for using and how he "almost died."

LOL getbig has to nitpick everything about chick ;D
