Title: Obama declares H1N1 National Emergency
Post by: Skip8282 on October 24, 2009, 08:55:46 AM
Admittedly, I don't know anyone who has come down with this.  Maybe I'm living in some unaffected area or something.

Obama Declares H1N1 Flu 'National Emergency'

President Obama signed a proclamation declaring the H1N1 influenza a national emergency, giving doctors and medical facilities greater leeway in responding to the flu pandemic.

Obama signed the declaration late Friday, which the White House said allows medical treatment facilities to better handle a surge in flu patients by waiving federal requirements on a case-by-case basis.

"The foundation of our national approach to the H1N1 flu has been preparedness at all levels -- personal, business, and government -- and this proclamation helps that effort by advancing our overall response capability," the White House said in a statement.

The flu has infected millions of Americans and killed nearly 100 children in the U.S. The chief of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday that over a thousand people have died as a result, with 46 states reporting widespread H1N1 activity.

"Since the beginning of the pandemic, we've seen more than 1,000 deaths and 20,000 hospitalizations," said Dr. Thomas Frieden, head of the CDC. "We expect it to occur in waves, but we can't predict when those waves will happen."

Sixty million Americans have been vaccinated against the seasonal flu this year, but an additional vaccine against H1N1 has been in short supply. About 120 million doses were expected to be made available by the middle of October, though only 11 million doses have been shipped to health departments for use.

The funny thing about all this in my experience is that I've only gotten the flu only once in my entire life and I have never recieved a flu shot. The folks that that I know that seem to be getting the flu are the ones that are getting flu shots. Go figure.

The flu is starting to spread a little over here too. We've had around 400 in total and one or two fatalities in the whole nation. Last week the flu shots were started to be distributed, I'll hopefully get mine next week.

Im not getting that shit and I live in NYC.

Its untested and in my opinion the government doesnt have a clue about what its doing with this shit.

I already got my flu shot and im loading up on the vitamins.

I volunteer at a hospital and as a pre-requisite for workers, you have to get your flu shot, but no swine flu shot is required. If the hospital doesnt force staff to get the shot even though they work around infectous people all day, I dont think most people have anything to worry about.

Got my regular flu shot with no problems.  H1N1, I'm not so sure about.  The government is definitely being proactive IMO.  On base, we have all kinds of emergency preparedness stuff going on.  Testing remote systems, identifying key areas and employees, etc., just in case the base has to shut down.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that they anticipate 60% of the population may get it.  But I still haven't seen a single case with anybody I know.

Look but don't touch brother-- The only thing tougher than working half time in the maternity ward and the other half in the terminally ill patients pavillion is keeping your mind and cock unfocused on the drop dead gorgeous indian/paki/arabian med school students in training and the already established supermilfs in administration.

I have to say though, seeing some of these women in a life saving/ helping the less fortunate role does make them hotter-- I must admit.
