Title: Had a Solid "feel good" moment this today...
Post by: Alex23 on October 25, 2009, 12:13:43 AM
My company sponsors a local high School "FIRST Robotics" competition team, some of the us paid the kid a visit today (no pedo) to see the progress....

I was amazed how resilient, focus and smart the kids are; No apparent stratification (there were "jocks", "geeks" and "glee club material" kids in the group) but I was mostly impressed how excited about science & engineering the kids were, felt like the mid 80's no joke... Val Kilmer in "Real Genius" all over... Not only these kids have solids basics of micro controllers, DSPs and microprocessors I learned in my 2nd of EE, these fuckers are Unix/linux fluent like it's 1998 all over... only thing thought, no black or mexican kids  :-\...  I think scientific curiosity is truly a European/Asian "gift" ... or could it be "cultural" "self gratification" driven... shit it's cooler to be a bean.ers/black gangster-ish than to push robotics...

But nontheless, pretty good feeling that the next generation is sprouting with Proud American Spirited Innovators.....

GodSpeed. Full blown climat-planetary control Space age is upon us.

Despite all prophecies of doom the upcoming generation is just fine. Those kids are amazing.

They've accumulated more knowledge at 17 than anyone I know in my generation at that same age... solid sign..

I feel a solid wind of innovation coming... doesn't get more American than that.

Hardly.  What Alex23 witness is truly not the norm.  I know for a fact as a majority of my family members are teachers in the public education system.  My brother is a math teacher and it's crazy how dumb, unmotivated, and lazy kids are nowadays.  Again there are some very talented, smart kids out there taking AP math etc.  But they are a small minority.  Most 4th graders are doing basic addition and subtraction while their Russian counterparts are awash in basic Algebra.

That's always been the case. The intelligence distribution follows the standard bell-shaped curve, with some very bright students and fairly dull minds bracketing the majority, which comprises the average.

Kids today are not as active physically as the ones from previous generation (due to things like gaming and computers) and perhaps lazier, but they have access to resources and technology that the ones growing up in the early 90s or before didn't have. That's made the best of them even better than the ones in the previous generation.

You can't blame them though - they need guidance and a lot of the adults today are far from being good role models, although I think the majority of people are still decent :D

shit we only have normal "upper middle class suburbs" here.. I wonder what a genius one look like here..

There are dumb lazy fucks everywhere. The color of your skin does not dictate your intelligence and capacity to excel but the meme you were raise into does.

3 I think..  one is the flash programmer. I was impressed with her skills. She's more knowledgeable than most of the CDMA guys I used to work with at Motorola.. She could already do the job at 18yo.

I live in Orange County.  I know the schools and the areas.  You're missing my point.  I never said anything about the color of skin having fuck all to do with academic success.  Meme?  LMAO!  Epic fail at using a word that is above your vocabulary.  Just because a small minority of kids is excelling at math and science is hardly representative of the greater academic environment.  US kids are behind in everything OVERALL!  Besides what's the point of having a handful of really smart people in society but everything else is borderline retarded?  LOL.

Cool of you to give of the hard earned, Alex.  Support those clever 'lil bastards.  They are pretty much all that stands between us and our would-be asian overlords.

Agree that not every kid is above average but the first world has lost its eye of the tiger.  If our successors don't get off their asses in a big way and soon, they're toast.

Having interviewed some EE students this year (and having done the same EE degree myself), I can honestly say that the kids who do it at home and are genuinely interested in it - at least a solid year ahead of anybody who just turns up class and passes their way through an EE degree.

My exact point & concerns. Great post.

I'm not conviced we've lost our way or aren't "hungry" anymore. The American Meme is strong. Its very core was founded on spinning off from the Roman/Catholic Empire and build a society on inovation. From Ben Franklin to Edison and Tesla. The Masonics knew what they were doing from the beginning.

I think the recent turmoils are more of setback than a long term trend.

Yeah, I mean once all the racist morons die we'll be one step closer to civilisation. Until then these "brilliant American catholic kids" will just be a hint of what can be achieved on this Earth. ::)
