The opposite question is more interesting.  Why should it be illegal?

That's what I'm asking, although I could have worded it better.  :P

they should throw a minimum age on it and a "no pimping" rule (cops will protect if legal) and call it fair

Yes!

I mean it's a giant industry like anything else.  Millions or Billions of $$$ could be taxed, and the girls standards of living could go way up.  Also put the dirt bag pimps out of business.

yes there are.

prostitution has been around forever and there is no way to eliminate it.  If you agree with it or don't agree with it is not the issue if it's impossible to prevent.  People out there will always pay for sex and people out there will always take pay for sex.  With it legal and regulated you at least provide a much higher level of saftey for all involved.  There are more arguments for it but these basic ones are so hard to get around, I won't muddy the argument with them.

always? how?  It hasn't felt like that with my marriage and we're at 10 years now.  The only down has been after having a kid when hormones/moods change and it's not bad, just less activity than before.  I know way to much info :D  I don't see it as paying for, it's been bonus bonus imo and I'm sure I'm more happy than if I were single, not getting any and not having experienced longterm love and family.

I know you might be kidding around but I answered serious since many actually do say this.  Bill Maher for example.

i think drkaje was being hyperbolic... but it's easy to argue that in a marriage there is always some form of payment

a better example is a one night stand with someone you don't know and will never see again

In Brazil, it's legal (the girls are called program girls--garotas de programas), and some still have pimps

The only difference between prostitution and porn is that the porn industry pay taxes.

I dont have a problem with legalizing prostitution.  While there may be a spike in the beginning of people going to these girls, it would level off and get to where we are now, just with more oversight, etc.

It would be badass and cheaper if some American cities had their own Red Light District.  I'm down!!!   ;D

You could regulate it, tax it and help prevent the spread of STD's.

Who here would be okay with his mother, sister or daughter being a prostitute?  Would you discourage your daughter if she told you that she wants to be a prostitute when she grows up?  Just curious.

If someone wanted to be prostitute the law wouldn't stop them.

As far as IF my daughter wanted to be prostitute and it was legal, of course i would discourage her, just as i would if she said she wanted to be in porn movies, or a stripper, escort etc...

Yes, my questions were assuming prostitution is legalized where you live.

Why would you discourage her, because you believe that prostitution is bad?

Argument for keeping prostitution illegal.  We will have less idiots like strawman around.

I don't know all of the arguments for or against legal prostitution.  But that it has been around forever and that there is no way to eliminate it is not a good argument for it.  You can't say that about child prostitution, which probably has been around forever too and there is probably no way to eliminate it either.

52 children recovered, 60 alleged child pimps arrested in crackdown
October 26, 2009

(CNN) -- Law enforcement authorities have recovered 52 children and arrested 60 pimps allegedly involved in child prostitution, the FBI announced Monday.

More than 690 people in all were arrested on state and local charges, the FBI stated.

The arrests were made over the past three days as part of a nationwide law enforcement initiative conducted on the federal, state and local levels, the bureau said.

"Child prostitution continues to be a significant problem in our country, as evidenced by the number of children rescued through the continued efforts of our crimes against children task forces," Kevin Perkins, assistant director of the FBI's Criminal Investigative Division, said in a written statement.

"There is no work more important than protecting America's children and freeing them from the cycle of victimization."

The three-day operation, tagged Operation Cross Country IV, was part of the FBI's ongoing Innocence Lost National Initiative, which was created in 2003 with the goal of ending sex trafficking of children in the United States.

The initiative, conducted with assistance from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, has so far resulted in the recovery of almost 900 children, according to the FBI. It has also led to more than 500 convictions.
