US President Barack Obama said Saturday the United States was recovering from deep recession and that "hundreds of thousands of jobs" had been created through massive investments.
The president cited this week's report on gross domestic product, pointing out that in the third quarter, GDP grew for the first time in over a year -- and faster than it has in the previous two years.
"Today, I am pleased to offer some better news that - while not cause for celebration - is certainly reason to believe that we are moving in the right direction," the president said in his weekly radio address.
Obama said the 787-billion-dollar Recovery Act stimulus package passed earlier this year had helped create or save over one million jobs.
Data posted on Recovery.gov, the website of the independent panel overseeing the stimulus measure, showed 640,329 jobs directly saved or created up until September 30.
Since the survey data only accounts for half the spending during that time, officials say the true number of jobs created is over a million.
Republicans, however, accused the administration of making up job creation numbers "out of thin air" to disguise the failure of Obama's economic policies.
Unemployment remains a key hurdle to sustained recovery, with the latest monthly figures in September pushing the jobless rate to a new 26-year high of 9.8 percent, with job losses accelerating to 263,000.

Why haven't they released the actual equation etc for how they came up with this completely fictitious number? The GDP number is pure money printing and govt. waste/spending with about 50% of it or 1.66 points of the GDP coming from CFC.

printing money and creating bs demand in the form of cash for clunkers doesnt stimulate aggregate demand this equals shaft for the stimulus plan...
the reason they dont give the formula is b/c it will make the white house look like shit.

Apparently if you do the math, with the total amount of money that was allocated for the job creation and the claimed amount of jobs saved or created, it comes out to about $160000 per job. Ofcourse, Democrats probably beleieve that is a good thing ;D Because everybody should be earning $160000 per year, right?

How the f-ck do you measure "jobs saved". That's a definition that allows them to have tons of bullshit room.
640,000 jobs were "created or saved" by the independent pannel...the white house estimates 1 million. How many are temporary jobs? How many jobs did they assume were saved that may or may not have been?
Even with their calculations, it's near $160,000 spent per job "saved or created", not an efficient program.

We are getting confounded unemployment #s too. There is over 10% unemployment, I've heard several experts say this. It's in the best interest of government to under-report in a recession.
And why has only 20% of the stimulus $ been spent?....because it wasn't a jobs only stimulus. Lots of pet projects and waste in there.
