Of interest...
Imagine this. At a time of political turmoil, a charismatic, telegenic new leader arrives virtually out of nowhere. He offers a message of hope and reconciliation based on compromise and promises to marshal technology for a better future that will include universal health care.
The news media swoons in admiration -- one simpering anchorman even shouts at a reporter who asks a tough question: "Why don't you show some respect?!" The public is likewise smitten, except for a few nut cases who circulate batty rumors on the Internet about the leader's origins and intentions. The leader, undismayed, offers assurances that are soothing, if also just a tiny bit condescending: "Embracing change is never easy."
So, does that sound like anyone you know? Oh, wait -- did I mention the leader is secretly a totalitarian space lizard who's come here to eat us?
Welcome to ABC's "V," the most fascinating and bound to be the most controversial new show of the fall television season. Nominally a rousing sci-fi space opera about alien invaders bent on the conquest (and digestion) of all humanity, it's also a barbed commentary on Obamamania that will infuriate the president's supporters and delight his detractors.
"We're all so quick to jump on the bandwagon," observes one character. "A ride on the bandwagon, it sounds like fun. But before we get on, let us at least make sure it is sturdy."
The bandwagon in this case is conspicuously saucer-shaped. "V" starts with the arrival of a couple of dozen ships from outer space, piloted by creatures who look like humans except a lot prettier. "Don't be frightened," says their luminously beautiful leader Anna (Morena Baccarin, "Serenity"). "We mean no harm."
The aliens -- who become known as V's, for visitors -- quickly enthrall their wide-eyed human hosts.
A handful of dissidents hold out against the rapturous reception given the V's. Some are simply uneasy, such as the youthful priest Father Jack (Joel Gretsch, "The 4400"), who sharply criticizes the Vatican's embrace of the V's as divine creations: "Rattlesnakes are God's creatures too."
With or without the political sheen, "V" is sweeping television storytelling at its best. Whether you choose to view it as a blood-and-guts war story, a spy thriller (unlike the original show, these V's are perfect replicas of humans, so you never really know who might be sitting beside you at the bar), a high-stakes family drama (as households divide over the intentions of the V's), a religious allegory (the V's make a crippled man walk, filling up churches again) or just a sci-fi throwback to the days of "Earth vs. the Flying Saucers" and "The Thing," "V" is irresistible. This bandwagon is definitely worth jumping on.
'V'

definitely watching tonight. I liked the original series back in the 80's although watching it today on sci fi it looks pretty cheesy.
-
Great..I dvr'ed em. I think this will be good. There is another invasion one coming out on the networks soon...more " we get smoked" then this one.
-
lol :D
-
Replace 'visitors' with 'obama' and the show is hilarious.
"They give us hope, mom..."
"You're not thinking for yourself, son!"
-
I'm sure there will be political commentary in the storyline. There usually is.
-
hahahahhahaha the V's promising universal healthcare!
-
Jesus almost killed a cripple :o
-
Badass opening... Ok, this is going to be sweet... That means they'll cancel it after the first year.
-

if you find any links post em ... tghabnjks :D

you can watch it there. Unless you were talking about ct's.

Some great commentary in this so far. I'm impressed. The journalist faced with doing his job, asking hard questions vs. elevating his career. Go soft on the interview or don't do the interview. There's been a few other gems too.

yeah, i'm loving this show so far.

also that they come under the image of good, positive progress and as a savior image. All things that get pushed on us in our society through these good intentions which people as a whole fail to question the longterm outcome of. Another gem of this show.

I have to watch, but i remember the original show which was pretty cool too.
-
"we don't divide ourselves into countries, we're one 'united people'" another interesting commentary from the antagonist of the story.

so far, it's a lot different which is good. I loved how they reinvented Battlestar Galactica. I don't think I would be as interested if they just followed the old story to a T on either of these. Battlestar also engaged in some great political commentary submerged in the story.

Ha ha I was thinking the same thing. I loved watching those chicks walk down those hallways in those red jumpsuits. Thier asses we totally booming for 80's chicks.

OH! and how about this, the guys looking like the crazy CTrs meeting in the basement while the rest of society is being suckered are the ones who are right. lol...

This show sounds good.
-
yea and lol, 240 was right, V wants to provide universal healthcare... make no mistake, it's politically motivated.
-
>:( Ok, what happened at the end. My recording cut off when the black dude showed that he was one of the visitors and said, "no not all of them" Anything happen after that?

the fbi chick's kid joined them. we see in the preview that her crooked partner isn't dead after all. a little confusing, as it was the season preview. Looks like it'll be a decent show for a bit. but sustainable? I dunno.
-
Unless you were talking about ct's.
lol
had it recorded. about to start watching it now.

the better the show, the more likely they will cancel it. That's been their record.
-
interesting they involved the church .
-
lol @ this show ... Im @ the point where the interview adn the group meeting is happening.
this show is Brutal :D
-
interesting they involved the church .
that was interesting.... Jesus almost crushes the guy falling and the aliens save him. Establishing the saviour image.
-
... the next crisis will be water.
-

What's Your opinion on the possibility that 'V' in itself is a propaganda ridden show? Much like many claims '24' was.

I didn't watch much of 24. I think one season and I caught a few episodes from other seasons. Obviously there was some political motivation to elements of the storyline but that's not unusual. I expect from the first episode of V that the writers also have purpose beyond pure fiction. That's also not unusual. If you've ever gone through writing courses, it doesn't take long to notice that most people want to have an underlying subtext commenting on current times in their writing. I guess you can call it propaganda. It certainly is for the simple minded, but for most, I hope they just see those elements stick out like I do and just enjoy the story as well as debate those elements raised.

i was shocked they put that on tv, the crucifix breaking like that.

as epic as Kirk kissing Uhura ;D
-
This show is kick ass!!! I now have three shows on basic TV to watch, House, V, and Flash Forward.
I agree...I was also noticing all of the subtext that was thrown in there. It will gain popularity because more people will bring up the similarities to the show and our current predicament. This show might make it two seasons, but then get canceled.
Disclaimer: I DO NOT BELIEVE THIS CONSPIRACY. Do you guys think that more people will latch on to the reptillian CT because of this show? What I mean, this is right up your alley MB and Hugo...that this show is also being used to lead people away from the real issues and have them go down the rabbit hole? I mean, we all know there is plenty of stuff already out there about reptillians here on Earth. I was thinking after the show that it could be used as disinfo too. Discuss.
Anybody remember Earth 2? That one didn't last long. That and Seaquest DSV...I wish that show would have gone longer. I loved that show when I was younger.
-
Agreed, that was a very good start. They didn't promote it as hard as some of the new series but it was certainly good.
Definitely will watch next week. I watch Fringe every week. Used to watch House too but not regularly anymore.

If they're so dumb that they believe reptilians are running around in high places hidden under human flesh, they're to fucking stupid to matter anyway.
-
Is there some kind of anti-war message in the show you think? 8)

HUGO - I LIKE THAT PIC ON YOUR POSTS!

True. I was thinking that "the powers that be" know people are that stupid and are playing on the current UFO hysteria and of course the CT theory mentioned above. It was just a thought...we've seen throughout history that it doesn't take much to push the masses in a certain direction when they are desperate or scared.
Anyways...I still thought the show was good and I hope that it continues to be a topic on this board as we've seen it ties to what is going on today. That...and we know they cancel the truly good shows so we might as well enjoy it while it lasts

LOL.... "So you say you're going to give us all Universal healthcare...?"

hahaha +1
-
never ever been into the reptilian thing. ... the way I've looked at it is. reptilian = sociopath.
-
More Obama commentary. Looking fwd to it?
-
Are u kidding me...great stuffff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
we should keep that original thread going on it.
-
Ur the boss shock troop make it happen.
-
"I can and do influence public opinion" Interesting comment considering the media usually denies that.
-
First episode is online now: http://abc.go.com/shows/v
-
that rover in the beginning reminded me of those nanobots in the skynet thread.
... how many times was Trust used in this episode?

Way too many. That media comment was spot on for the "real world". 8)
The phone tapping is crazy too...maybe a representation of the patriot act in the series? The Vs seem to intercept everything. Including pay phones.
-
They are trying to cram too much material in each episode.
It won't be renewed.
-
They fired the original producer...and the show will only run 4 eps before starting again in the spring.
-
"people fear change, it's normal"
"We must not underestimate the importance of popular opinion among humanity. opinions can easily change. monitor them and if necessary shape those opinions, by doing so we can stop any resistance before it starts"
"Only together can we hope for the future"
The fact that the V chose a single case of unjust with Mary Faulkner to exploit and highlight resulting in increased support for the V.
All in all, very little political relevance in this episode. Point out if I missed anything...
According to HH6 we only have one more episode before it starts again in the spring. Big bummer.... If they ran it as a mini series with potential like Syfi did with Battlestar that would have been much better but to cut off after 4 episodes will probably be the death of this. I rarely give the major networks a chance on any interesting series like this because they usually fuck it up and or just cancel it. It's become a regular routine with these fuckheads. I pretty much ignore anything and everything they put out because they usually fuck it up and it gets canceled. If you want a sure bet, go with the shit put out by FX, SyFi, HBO, AMC and a few others who devote and promote their investment and time and stay in it for the long haul.

You hit the bullseye with the quotes. The only thing I was thinking of was the "false flag attack" on the Vs second in command. I'm sure most of us saw that one coming...that's all I can add to what you have.
-
bump, now that it's back on.
