Edit: Sorry, foolishly tried copying three links at once.

OK, all I see are a bunch of dead links - or is that part of the joke?

Can't really argue with the sentence, although some are questioning the fairness of the proceedings.
Also, it does go to show that harsh sentences are no deterrent.
-
Mmm, barbaric but then he was a murderer - I don't think there needs to be a public display.
-
I agree with the punishment but not the running order.
-
He raped and murdered 3-5yr old kids. Punishment isn't harsh enough, but at least it's a start.

Like James, I am always an opponent of Sharia law.
The sentence is wrong.
Islam in its current form is anti democratic and vile.
Islam is only possible if Muslims realise that Muhammed had flaws.
They need to drop the whole Jihad part of Islam.

Does democracy really work well in tribal cultures?

Does democracy really work well in tribal cultures?
That's debatable.
Robert Putnam, author of Bowling Alone, claims that there is a need for social capital in order for democracy to work.
Eg, networks in the local community in form of choirs, fraternal clubs, et al.
And there's not a whole lot of tradition of that in eg Africa.
That's why I'm pretty pessimistic about a long term democracy working in Afghanistan.
What kind of foundation is there for democracy?
I'd say pretty much none.
You would need to start up sports clubs, choirs, social clubs (dance halls?), et al. And several other things in order to sort of kickstart a foundation while "building" it from the top as well.
Sorry for getting off topic a little, you posted a very good question IMO. 8)

Mark Twain said it best: "Is it, perhaps, possible that there are two kinds of democratic civilization -- one for home consumption and one for backward and dark foreign markets?"
