A lot of their money comes from endorsement deals for products. The golf industry is built around selling equipt., so often the endorsement deals are massive.

Very true. Many come from good families that actually teach them values and morals. Maybe that is the reason?

Advertising and sponsorships. It's also a very old game with a lot of history. A sport's pay scale is determined by it's gross profit and popularity with consumers. Out of all the pro sports, golf is the sport that has the most appeal to consumers, because pretty much anyone can play it. Also, Golf is a sport that has a huge portion of high income individuals who play as a hobby. It makes sense that it's pay scale is among the most lucrative in the world of sports.

Golf has a bigger demographic.

Next question.

No they don't......I worked in minor league baseball and saw their paychecks with my own eyes. You have one or two guys per team that make good money, many of the rest make sub $30,000 a year.
Look at the money list of PGA players....there is no comparison.

Not even close. Pro Golfers make crazy money.

gophers are not athletes, they are a parasite upon the land, all this money should be used to feed the homeless. you know how much of this country 's land is being wasted for these turds, neither do i but it's way too much. let them play minature golf it's just about as exciting, even more so when windmills and such come into play.

you got the carlin reference, george was a visionary, but seriousely i could really get into golf if they would plant some land mines and such around the course at least it would be interesting. than they the goofers would deserve there money.

who makes more $$$ per year...
the average NBA player, the average NFL player, or the average PGA player?
My guess is NBA then NFL, but who knows. I thought 90% of the guys in a pro golf tourney didn't make a cent each match.

Yep, racecar drivers are athletes. Have you seen the shape that Schumacher and co. Have to be in?they have trainers and nutritionists. Becuase one has to deal with lots of g loads laterally, horizontally, and vertically. Plus the endurance racers suffer from fatique, high blood pressure. Just because you are sittig down, does not mean forces are not being applied to the body, and one doesn't exert any effort. Do not confuse your daily drive with F1.
Note, I don't consider drag racing in the same league as endurance racing
-
sure
yah because Golfers are the only "athletes" that get endorsments, so it only counts for them. And compainies like titlist and Calloway are much bigger than Reebok and Adidas ::)

the average pro baseball players makes way more than the average pro golfer.
That's not what body was responding to. The guy said that MINOR league baseball players make more than avg PGA players. Which is completely false. I've seen the paychecks of the baseball players.
On the 2009 money list the "avg" PGA player....we'll say around #125-145 has already made $400,000 to $500, 000 and that's not including endorsement deals......the avg minor league ball player doesn't even make 100k a year.....not even close.

Ball players make their $$ on their signing bonus which can be good if early round draft picks. Now, some minor leaguers are on the Major League team's 40 man roster so they make the minimum(at least) MLB salary. Otherwise, pretty much a 25k signing bonus and then maybe a couple thousand/month + meal $$....peanuts and bus rides!
BTW, I see where our friend "MemberX" just posted on the Mr GB contest board. Only 5 posts in his account however, so I'm not sure what's up with that???
-
Only the best pro golfers make the big bucks. hundreds, probably thousands more are struggling to make the cut. Pouring beers and waiting tables to finance their travel and expences to play tournaments. Only the elite top guys get the big endorsements.

But don't baseball players play like 160 games a year? Do not want.
-
But don't baseball players play like 160 games a year? Do not want.
MLB 162 games in 6 months....minor league seasons usually run from April-Sept....golfers work on their craft as much as any other sports year round

Good point, fortunately there are more and more golf courses that work with environmentalists to have a positive impact on the land they are built on. In most European countries you would not get a planning permission for a golf course otherwise.
In terms of feeding the homeless I don't really see the connection to golf. The amount of (perfectly good) food that is thrown away in industrialised countries every day would be more than sufficient to feed the homeless. No need to close any golf courses for that.
-
Mmmm, just a response to the posters who are comparing Average baseball players to the average PGA tour player.....the "average" PGA tour player has to make a MINIMUM of $850000 just to stay on tour barring a sponsors exemption. If they don't maintain that and drop below I think 125th on the money list, they go back down to the Nationwide tour. That's $850k in winnings. And to the poster who said "why don't they donate some of that money (or something to that effect) pro golfers are probably the most charitable of all sports combined. Tiger donates ALL of his endorsement money to his foundations around the world to help further kids and their education. His endorsements alone are over $100mil. Do the math!
-
Hey Coach, do you think a 40 year old guy that has been a weekend warrior really work hard and maybe make a run at the pros or is it too late? We are talking an average of +8 as of right now.

MMmm, maybe. My goal is to make the Champions tour by 2014. I went from a 15 to a 10.2 in 1 1/2 years. I've been playing for 15 years but got consistant and serious about the sport 2 years ago.

Because most golfers are well educated and well rounded and have their moral values in check...it's a gentlemens sport to where they have to hold themselves accountable. It's a sport of individual accomplishment and unless it's like a Ryders or Presidents cup to where it's a team effort.

Minor league ballplayer making $50,000 > Pro golfer making $250,000
If you are on Tour and not yet good enough to have several sponsers, $ 250,000 will not go far. By the time they make the PGA tour, most golfers have their equipment at least provided by sponsers. But many still have to pay their own airfare and hotels, as well as food and maybe a car rental too. This gets very expensive for a 9 or 10 month season, not to mention if you also have a permanent residence to either pay rent or mortgage on. Golfers are at a stop from Wed thru Sun, paying for meals and hotel, and then need to travel to the next stop on tour.
Plus, each golfer either pays their caddie 10% of earnings or 7% plus the caddie's travel expenses. The bottom rung golfers' caddies usually choose 7% and expenses, as its a better deal for them. While Tiger or Phil's caddie would rather get 10% of their much bigger earnings and pay their own way. So the golfer barely qualifying for the tour has to pay both his and his caddie's travel expenses.
If you're a Triple-A player you get around $30 a day meal money, plus usually some kind of spread after the games, just not as good as the majors. All minor leaguers have their travel payed for by the team, sometimes plane sometimes bus, but never out of the player's pocket. Unless he misses the plane or bus and has to make his own arrangements. And hotels are also payed by the team.
-
hey flex where do you come up with 250,000? right now its at 623,824 and just a little more than 250,000 but yes it does get expensive but thats not including there sponsorships ;D lets get that straight
-

good point about the food thrown away, but i'd like to see giant houses put up on golf courses for the poor people.

I knew a caddy back in the early 90's and he told me his golfer had to make over $100,000 to break even. Didn't really look up any numbers, just guessed for inflation. ;D
Is $623,824 the average money earning for all the pros on tour? I would think one could make less than that without a sponser and still not lose money. Plus they all have some kind of sponser, at least for their equipment, so the companies can brag how many tour players use their stuff.
In MLB, the minimum salary is about $430,000, with all travel expenses and equipment paid, and over $100 a day meal money. Plus free food and supps( at least legal ones ) before the game, and really nice spreads of food and sometimes beer and liquor after the game. I am sure the average major league salary is over 1 million, probably closer to 2 million.
I don't know the average minor league salary, but no real expenses for the players. So without a major sponser, it's better to be a minor-league ballplayer than a PGA Tour Pro.
-

DUDE WHERE THE FUK DO YOU THINK MINOR LEAGUE PLAYERS MAKE MORE? MLB PLAYERS ARE PAID A SALRIE AND GOLFERS GET MONEY EARNINGS FROM WINNINGS NOT WHAT THE ITALIAN MOB PAYS THEM AND NOT TO INCLUDE ENDORSEMENTS SO SHUT THE FUK UP ALREADY :o
-
Way off on the minor league player. A & AA players barely make a grand a month their first year and most A player are making less. After that they can negotiate. But, not many making much more than $2,000 a month and in AAA some could make $50,000+ a year. Minimum is just over $2,000 a month for AAA and just over $1,000 for AA & and under $1,000 for A player. Meal money is around $25 a day for all minor leaguers. When you are in AAA you are doing good. I had several friends playing AAA and then in the majors. There are some who can make $250,000 a year especially if they were in the big and then put down for one reason or another. generally in AA and A you are rooming with 2 o 3 or more other guys to help pay the bills. Back in the 70's the average monthly was around $400 a month. So eating macaroni and cheese was very popular. In St. Petersburg, FL we lived in the homes of people and rented rooms for $100 a month and we had to take the trash out, do the dishes are other chores.

In St. Petersburg, FL we lived in the homes of people and rented rooms for $100 a month and we had to take the trash out, do the dishes are other chores.
I said triple A players got about $30 per day meal money, and there are ones that make $50,000 or more. So not far off from what you said. and yes, I bet a lot of them room together to save expense when they are not on the road. But even their own apt. is less than paying for hotels on Tour without a sponser. And you said in the 70's that mac n chz was popular. Hank Aaron said when he was in the minors in the late 40's, him and 3 other players would pool money to buy a loaf of bread and a couple of pounds of bologna, and feel like kings being able to finally eat and be filled. Yogi Berra was always hungery and couldn't afford to eat on his meal money. On Sundays, a nice Italian lady would bring him hero sandwhiches in the minors. Yogi said without this old lady's help, he probably would have quit baseball and gotten a regular job so he could afford to eat.
Most major league players had offseason jobs until about the 80's. Only the few highest paid guys could support a family without one. Golfers also weren't making a lot . Ben Hogan won a British Open, and his prize money was less than his travel expenses to go there. He was the best golfer in the world, and he skipped the next 3 British Opens, cause even if he won he lost money.

Every minor league ball player goes to the unemployement office when the season is over unless they get lucky and play winterball somewhere. The high school I went to had many pro ballplayers come out of it including Cy Young award winner Mike Scott who I caught. Back then the scouts encouraged you not to play college ball. I am surprised that the minimum for the minors has not increased much since the mid 70's. IN fact the Class A minimum is only $850. Someone said that they count on their signing bonus alot. And that is very very true. It is also something they go through very fast. Unless you make it to the big's life in the minors is not so hot. But, you still get to play a gamne you love and have a blast. And there is always that chance you get the call. I knew a couple guys who literally played AA ball for 10 years. Once you play 5 years (in minors or majors) you are eligible for a pension. Of course it is very small unless you play in the majors. You can also start collecting your pension I think at 40 years old. The longer you wait to collect though the more you get (monthly).

I know some golfers, I play some myself, but i really suck at it,and as soon as you rturn pro, you can be making 100k a year by doing the asian tour... which is good money and you are NO ONE in the real golf world... Carlos franco from paraguay, he made a few million dollars playing golf and he is not known...
