Title: Why?????
Post by: OzmO on November 09, 2009, 04:39:26 PM
I'm up here in Communists Eastern Canada getting taxed up the ying yang, but one  thing I have noticed is that there are droves and droves of privately owned businesses in every field.  Very few chains, except Tim Hortons, and Pizza Pizza.

Why is that?  You don't see this in America.  Here's what you see:  Taco bell, Micky Dees, Carl's etc...  Home Depot, Best Buy, Office max, Staples, Wal Mart, Target etc...

WTF?

Not sure, but what you're calling a chain doesn't necessarily mean it's not a private business.  McD's and Taco Bells are privately owned franchises, like a Subway or Quiznos, etc.

Do you feel that the smaller, private businesses are better than larger corporate owned companies?

tes but it takes a LOT on money, hundreds of thousands paid to the corp. to open up a franchise similar to those.

maybe the average canadian doesnt have the capitol to start one. maybe you're staying in a rural area?

Yeah, very much so.  It's true that we end up paying a little more, but i think in the end we end up with better services and products.  I also see it as easier for someone to go into business by them selves which is what free enterprise is about.  Main Street America is gone.  I think we are entering a phase of "corporate communism" (maybe these are the incorrect words)  where our options are limited to these big companies allowing them to sell inferior products and services.

A good example is starbucks.  There was a family owned bagel/coffee shop near my work.  they baked their bagel fresh daily, the owner even grew her own tomatoes.  A starbucks opened up a quarter mile from her.  With in a year she was out of biz.  Ever tried a POS bagel from Starbucks?

So what ended up happening?  Another privately owned business, another american dream, gone.

I don't know about that.  I was talking with the health inspector for our area a few years ago, and he told me that he finds way, way more problems with the mom & pops.  And he's had to close several mom & pops, but never a franchise.  The franchises typically police themselves with audits and inspections so you essentially have two checks on them.  Don't get me wrong, you'll find problems on both sides, but I think overall, the chains are safer.

Can't say I've ever had a Starbucks bagel, but I'm guessing that your saying that Starbucks put them out of business based on cheaper prices?  IDK.  It doesn't seem to me that the price differences are not so large that that would be a consumers only consideration when making a decision.  Maybe the Starbucks had better coffee, maybe a better atmosphere, maybe shorter lines, maybe better parking, etc.

IDK, but I think there are a lot of factors that drive people from one place to another, not just price.

Starbucks has a known brand and huge marketing campaign.  Name recognition. They also have a standard or reproducibility. Those are the reasons.  Their coffee is overpriced, I typically prefer an independent coffee house but I am unlike most people.

Well my theory was always that unregulated Capitalism leads to big players dominating the market and pushing the smaller players out with their lower prices. In the end though the local economy suffers as the profits usually go somewhere else and not back into the local community.

That seems to be what's happening in the USA.

Everybody who seems sooooo concerned about small business should be up in arms over the healthcare bill as it's going to put unjust stress on small business' and squeeze them out.  I don't know how Canada taxes small businees in regards to healthcare, etc... but the current plan being put forth is NOT going to help the situation.

yes, incorrect words.  I know what you're saying and you're right.  It's corporate fascism or just fascism especially with the bonding between corporation and government we have..  If it were corporate communism, they would be attempting to provide for the people or something.  Kind of a contridiction in terms for them.

Guys, here's what's going to happen. The commie, pinko, marxists will steal OzmO's soul while here.
When he gets back to Cali, he'll be bringing a husband, a pound of weed, and a universal healthcare card.

Be afraid... be very afraid.  :P

Calm down Jag.  Here's how we fix the problem:  You fuck the husband, I'll take the weed, and 33 can burn the healthcare card in effigy.

No worries!
