Can't see the video but is Levrone talking about 500lb squats already?

Nothing beats genetically superior muscle-memory.

I thought Kevin had a bad back and couldn't squat.

That was the rumor that was going around during the last few years prior to his retirement. Every show his legs were worse and worse, to the point where many guys were even asking him if he trained legs at all any more.
He said he blew out his back by squatting 700lbs.
Title: Re: Levrone and the 500 lbs Squat Challenge
Post by: Stavios on November 13, 2009, 11:16:09 AM
he should just leg press then
Title: Re: Levrone and the 500 lbs Squat Challenge
Post by: Van_Bilderass on November 13, 2009, 11:23:13 AM
He should start deadlifting. Avoiding lower back work doesn't ever seem to improve a bad back. He needs to strengthen the lower back if he has back problems. Reverse hypers, deadlifts, good mornings, etc.

Leg press is almost as bad as squats for the back.

Maybe you are right !

I never had any back pain while deadlifting but I can't do squat anymore

just unracking the bar, something pinches a nerve in my lower back and it hurts like hell.
Even with 135 lbs

Van, can't see the picture. But front squats, safety bar squats, and safety bar box squats (not touch and go) have always worked well as an alternative.

I had a similar problem for nearly 3yrs, Stavios. I couldn't touch 185 or else I would feel my back pop. I could deadlift, do lunges and hack squats, but no Back squats. Front squats were iffy, but usually a no go.
One day I got a massage hoping that would cure the issue, and just hoped it wasn't a disc or something serious/major. I told her my weak back issues, and they tested my back and I didn't even move. When I got to my psoas muscles, I nearly hit the roof.
Once I started to loosen my psoas up, I'm fine and have been squatting again for about a year. Nearly back to my old weight.
So, I'm not saying that's the your problem, but if you haven't, maybe something you can check into.

Probably raw, not sure about numbers. I have to look up what a decent weights are for my weight and age. It's been along time.

My dad blew his back when squatting, and I think it was partly because he never deadlifted.

And you don't deadlift, right? Never did? As I recall you aren't a fan of the lift, though now that you're into all this elitefts and westside and t-nation (fag-nation) writer/trainer stuff you'll have to keep this opinion on the down low. :D

What do you think of good mornings?

No, I'm just not a fan of deadlifting for bodybuilding. When I was powerlifting years ago I deadlifted regularly. If you recall from my postings along time ago, I trained with Gus Rethwich and before that Dave Shaw. You have to also remember back in the day before all of these nice pretty gimmick machines came out, we trained heavy, I've always trained heavy. We were doing conjugate training before they used the word "conjugate".

Well, you're right of course. But those who do lots of deads do tend get a thicker upper back, thicker than they would get from any amount of rows and pulls, even if not to the same extent.

Right now I'm doing my deads with a trap bar, my best on that is 505x3. Haven't done straight bar in years. A couple of weeks ago when my sons school gave me all that equipment, it came with 2 Texas bars.
