White House to Begin Push on Immigration Overhaul in 2010

The Obama administration will insist on measures to give legal status to an estimated 12 million illegal immigrants in legislation to overhaul the immigration system that it will begin to push early next year, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said on Friday.
In an address at the Center for American Progress, a liberal policy group in Washington, Ms. Napolitano sought to dispel any notion that the administration — with health care, energy and other major issues crowding its agenda — might postpone the most contentious piece of an immigration overhaul until after midterm elections next November.
Laying out the administration’s bottom line, she said it will argue for a “three-legged stool” that includes tougher enforcement laws against illegal immigrants and the people who hire them and streamlining the system for legal immigration, but also what she called a “tough and fair pathway to earned legal status.”
With unemployment surging over 10 percent and Congress wrestling with health care, advocates on all sides of the immigration debate had started to doubt that President Obama would keep to his pledge to take on the divisive issue of illegal immigration in the first months of 2010.
Congress should be ready to move forward on immigration, Ms. Napolitano said, because the administration had made a “fundamental change” in security at the border and in cracking down on employers hiring illegal immigrants. She said the Border Patrol had increased its forces by more than 20,000 officers and more than 600 miles of border fence were completed, both milestones set by Congress.
“Let me emphasize this,” she said. “We will never have fully effective law enforcement or national security as long as so many millions remain in the shadows.”

OBAMA TO AMERICAN TAXPAYERS:
-
Bush wanted amnesty too. It probably would have been political suicide for McCain.

Why do you think conservatives revolted and turned on Bush in 2005?
Why do you think McLame lost? Conservatives stayed home and wont vote for anyone supporting this nonsense.
I really hope Obama tries this while UE approaches 11% officially. I sincerely hopes he goes for this. He will get a backlash and beating in 2010 that will have his own party force a primary in 2012.

Someone figured out lettuce would basically end up being around $5+/head if you could find Americans willing to pick it. Illegals suck but neither party cares about them beyond anything but a distraction to keep groupies arguing.
If Republicans cared about illegals they would have pushed for an amendment removing citizenship from their children born on US soil one of the times they had enough votes to prevent a filibuster.

The base of the party is not the same as the country club types.
As far as the price of lettuce, so what?
We pay for it in taxes and other societal costs. Where we dont pay for it in lettuce we pay for it in taxes and everything else.

mccain and kennedy wrote the amnesty bill

240 - THIS IS WHY HE LOST.
MCCAIN SUCKED!

Just wait until they (illegals) bankrupt the new healthcare system.

Keep posting that Palin 2012 bumper sticker. The Dems are praying the GOp runs that walking soap opera, instead of a serious, mature grown-up who will look Obama in the eye and say "Barrack, stop spending our money!"

240 - I dont care who runs, by 2012 anyone is going to walk into the WH other than Obama. He got 52.7% of the vote, not 99.9% and he acts like he id a dictator with a mandate to remake this country in a communist mold. Independents aint buying it.
I think the only hope he may have is that the GOP wins 2010 and then obama tries to pull a clinton 1996. However, that also is based on what the economy is doing at the time.

Yeah, and how did that strategy work out?
McCain may have been undesirable in terms of conservative standards, but I think he would have been a far better alternative to the current Groveler-in-Chief. To those who didn't vote, fuck off. To those of us who did, well, at least we gave it our best shot.

I went to Pittsburgh for a week to do vote fraud watch for McCains campaign. I cant stand that asshole, but on almost every level he beats *****.
What we have now is just unthinkable. Its getting worse by the day too.

yeah, if the economy does recover, Obama could easily win, despite everything else.
"My Stimulus plan was a success, UE is falling and the jobs are back" at the 2012 debate, standing next to a 1/2-term governor who said it wouldn't work, would certainly be advantageous for him.
However, if we're still in this same crockpot of shit, then yeah, Barney the Purple dinosaur will win out.

2012 is going to be a referendum on Obama more than anything else:
240 - can you imagine "Are you better off than 4 years ago" question getting addressed if people are paying higher energy bills due to cap & tax, amnesty for illegals, higher taxes and dmv style health care, UE still over 10%, etc?

Agreed - but
Suppose Obama pulls 5 or 6 of these high profile moves out of his ass, to put on display for those 10% of voters that decide every election. The "true" Dems and repubs are gonna vote party line no matter what. It's the 10% in the middle - swing voters - that decide every election.
In 2000, these voters were tired of the 'wet spot' adminstration and voted Bush.
In 2004, these swing voters thuoght Kerry was a douche and voted Bush.
In 2008, these swing voters saw mccain/palin as senile/dingbat and too much like Bush, and voted Obama.
In 2012, what will happen? it'll be about this middle 10%. And if O can dazzle them with NYC show trials, maybe catch bin laden, maybe record some jobs, and maybe declare a win in afghanistan... it's gonna be hard for someone with LESS experience than him to come in and shit on the job he's done.
Even with crap/trade, healthcare, etc. It only takes a few big fresh 2012 topics to take people's minds off this 3-year-old shit form 2009. Hell, suppose Obama admits there are UFOs or some silly shit like that - None of those middle 10% will be thinking about 2009 legislation.

Most people vote on feelings, not facts.

it's true. they'd rather have a beer with Bush, so he won.
if you reversed their positions on every single issue and their party - Bush would have still beaten Gore with a lib platform.

240 ur not grounded in reality. Barry won on the independent vote. He's lost that vote and the trend is shifting more toward more independents and less primary parties. The GOP will or has taken note of the victory in Virginia..where a very conservative candidate ran on core issues..few attack adds and solid principles that registered with voters. Newt is working on that core plank that the GOP can run with in 2010 and solidify by 2012. Barry has to hope the economy picks up or he's gonna loose by double digits.
-
Why do you think conservatives revolted and turned on Bush in 2005?
The majority didn't, the only minor revolt among conservatives only accrued after Obama was elected.

i know independents are not happy with him. I nkow he'd probably lose the election if it were held today.
However, IMO he's shrewd enough to engineer some situations to make himself look good to casual news-watchers as the election draws near. Catch Bin Laden or do something big like that, and his ass gets a 4 or 5 point poll bump in a week.

Correct. 18% of Repubs who voted in 2004 didn't bother showing up in 2008.
I'm betting 18% of them don't stay home in 2012 - but 20% of Dem 2008 voters could easily stay home.

spot on
that obama is a clever black bastard

The situation with illegals should have been handled years ago. It's a bit too late now. Deporting them would cost more than it's worth. Just naturalize them, force them to learn english and get tested for third world diseases and let them stay. Put up a better fence to stop another 100 million from coming. Best you can do logically. If you are angry they came here illegaly hey so am I but the problem is where it is. You try to handle it the best you can and move forward.
The economy will not recover by 2012. Obama will not get re-elected.

Won't happen, they refuse to learn, and by giving them wha they want, it only justifies them not learning. Many of them who come from Guatamala, Honduras, El Salvador, are illiterate in their own language. Now you want force them to learn English. In many of those countries listed, the governments killed off all the educated people. They really want a separate but equal system. Rules for Gringos and English speakers and rules for them. Problem is, when you are a citizen you have to pay taxes, so continuing the same mode of thinking and action will be the status quo. Being that

Once they give these fence jumpers amensty, what is to stop a new flood of illegals flooding the border with promises of future amnesty?
Anyone who sincerely believes that the govt will close the border after this amnesty is deluded.
This is nothing more than an Obama 2012 campaign scheme since he knows most taxpayers will be in outright revolt by that time.
